Another aspect that I’ve seen on reports is that some of these scammers who call aren’t participating voluntarily. I’m sure it’s a minority of scammers, but there are operations where some of these folks, especially those connected with the romance scams, are evidently being coerced. They can be punished severely if they don’t produce at a level their bosses think appropriate. That doesn’t mean you should give in or anything, that just creates an incentive for more people to be trafficked, but not all of these scammers you interact with are the OG bad guy/gal. They may be a victim too.

@@sunsetshadowyou know that means nothing. Leave it to his mods to spread a load of rubbish. Just working with others in the field doesn’t mean he actually knows what he’s doing. He’s been relying on script kiddies and other folks to help him get into scam call centres. Editing videos to make it look like he knows his stuff that’s hardly being genuine, is it?

  29. @nagi603

Two years ago I fell for a romance scam and lost a great deal of money. So desperate to cling onto the first and only person who appeared to take any interest in me. Guess I had to learn the hard way how evil the world really is. I haven’t told anyone in real life about it, and I don’t know if I could. I also desperately wonder what my life would be like if I was wiser back then. It used to be everyday for the longest time, now sometimes I go a few days without thinking of those memories and what could’ve been. But I have yet to better myself and my life, and I doubt I will. I just feel like a walking zombie most of the time. Robbed of something that wasn’t even known to me. Oh how I wish time travel was real! But alas.

I sometimes string scammers along for as long as I (and my wife) can stand it, on the principle that any minute they’re trying to scam me is a minute they can’t be scamming someone who might fall for it. One time, after I finally revealed that I knew it was a scam all along and told the scammer he should be ashamed of himself, he threatened to come to my house and r*pe my whole family. I thought that was an unrealistic threat at the time, but after watching this video, I’m no longer so sure…

When i worked as tech support for Apple. We used to remote into iphone’s and Mac devices occasionally to troubleshoot with people. As it made things easier to see what they were seeing. They way they had it set up was easy for us, and also helped assure people they werent being scammed. As they Remoting software is native to the OS/IOS. So all they had to do was sit at the deskstop/homescreen and click agree or disagree after reading the TOS.

15:55 – Spent 2 days scambaiting facebook car sales advert (basically some form of advance payment scheme – “pay deposit if you want to secure this car, because there are so many people trying to buy it, because it is like third of the price as I am leaving the country next week and need money”). They tried all sorts of fake accounts, but in the end they game me legitimate UK bank account details for Romanian guy (you can actually check if details match before the transfer is made and they were correct) who was able to track to court judgement in 2012 where he actually was caught scamming and deported to Romania.

I have provided all the details to police, but they said they are not interested “because no actual crime has occurred yet”(i.e. I have not sent the money over yet). Sadly police in UK is hopeless they really do not investigate crimes anymore and I wasn’t expecting much… still – had details felt like it was my duty to report it. But apart of that I could not do much more.

The sad thing about these scam victims, most of them will look for someone to blame after. They would say for example that their bank(s) is/are not protecting them, when they in fact participated to it. Sorry, but scam and fraud are two different things — getting scammed isn’t covered by a $0 Fraud Liability that is being offered by some major card networks such as Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, Discover, etc. So please be very careful.

Years ago I had someone try to scam me, said that when I went to this store I was entered into a Disney vacation thing. But they hung up right after telling me, I was baffled, this was maybe 2008 or so. Maybe a week or so later I got a call back, saying I’d won the trip, then they said to verify I needed to confirm my 18 digit credit card code. I told them I didn’t have one, at the time I literally didn’t have a credit card, they tried to push “We have 12 of the digits, we just need you to confirm” and when I said I literally don’t have a credit card there was a pause. They quickly said “you are no longer, eligible, goodbye!” And hung up promptly.

One other important thing about scammers and 2FA. There are methods that are becoming more common to bypass the 2FA code apps entirely. If you have those codes enabled for fresh login, but then you have your browser remember your session so you don’t have to login every time you go to your email or something else, there are ways to steal and copy those session tokens and get access to your accounts. A general good rule of thumb is dont have browsers remember your sessions for you and login every time, especially for your important sites such as banking and email.

There was a closer that overlooked and monitored the room and he’d take over as soon as he heard someone hook a fish. They sold office supplies by the gross with a markup of about 1,000%. Rumor was that they were “Hungarian mafia”.

This information would have been useful 3 yrs ago, when I wanted to invest in Crypto, all was fine with the English speaking guy, but after they took my money, they handed me to their manager – surprise surprise, it was an Indian accent, it was then I realised it was a scam.

I like how he gives this information with a straight face because the amount of the population that doesn’t fall for that kind of crap is so much smaller than you think that he actually has to seriously relay the answers to these questions when the non-branded portion of us are just grabbing our forehead and pinching

I got scammed 2 months ago. I was looking to buy dolls and mentioned it in a private Facebook group. It never crossed my mind scammers would target you for low amounts. I happily sent them $150 before realizing I had been scammed.
Since then , they reached me 3 times. These times I was ready. I kept them engaged for as long as possible just to annoy them. And after hours of seeing them “working it” I would agree to send them money. Which I did, I the form of 1 dollar. I then screenshot the payment information and publish it…..

Really, if you want to mess with U.S. scammers, a huge outfit is set up in the 414 area code. I reported them to the FCC 6 month ago. During the election, they started back up.

I just got the Missed Jury Summons call the other day. Very well done. He had my old address and the address of a house that I’m currently building. Very persistent too. Despite hanging up several times he called back. I told him I would just come to the sheriff’s office and he said I’d get arrested if I did. I just laughed and hung up. He finally gave up.

For a while I was getting scam texts that would follow the arc of
“hey mike I know it’s been a while. how are you?”
    “Sorry, I’m not mike.”
“Oh I’m so sorry for disturbing you.”
    “No worries”
“What’s your name? Maybe this could be a friendship!”
    “My name is burp”
    etc etc etc
then they send a link to something so we can “connect better” because they really feel like fate brought us together.

So I started cutting out the ten minutes of back and forth and was like “Hey, this isn’t mike, and I know how this sounds, but I feel like fate brought us together. I think I’m falling for you.”

The next reply was “Falling? You love me? What are you, crazy??”

and then they stopped texting 🙁

Sadly that actually was Garth Brooks my grandma was talking to

  216. @MVinny24

  217. @gmar89541

    November 14, 2024 at 10:04 am

Why don’t scambaiters get in trouble tho? It seems like it would fall under the category of vigilantism. Not to mention that all the things like hacking, doxxing, and secretly gaining access to someone’s device are also illegal. It doesn’t magically become legal just bc they’re scammers too.

Like, it’s entertaining and is definitely karma, but why aren’t people like Pierogi getting in legal trouble for it?
