Many of the jobs that keep the world running — like cleaning bathrooms, picking up trash, caring for the elderly — pay so poorly that workers can barely make ends meet. Nonprofit leader Zeynep Ton is intent on changing that, showing why everyone wins when companies pay their people livable wages and offer opportunities for…

South Korea 1 in ten jobs are done by robots or computers
In the US, its 1 in 40.
And climbing fast.

And yet the DPRK is happier and more stable than the South despite everything. And isn’t full of robots.

Defining a “job” done by a “computer” or “robot” is quite subjective and if you accounted for every work action it’d be way more imo, it’s not a bad thing that Ai and algorithms are taking jobs or work, it’s typically repetitive low skilled clerical/office work anyways

Profits over people until we take a stand

If you want the best life for people, you should want profits. Else you’ll all be poor, but I guess some are happy to force everyone to be poor through government forced solutions since they won’t have to be envious of those who produce more value than they do.

the issue is companies chasing larger profits to give to owner/shareholders. While Companies would never let this happen, they need to stop this value transfer from “lowend” workers to high end earners. The system is rigged for the wealthy to keep getting richer. And the rich aren’t going to let that change. Most economies are fueled by lots of low end purchases. If AI replaces those people there will be no economy for all the jobs lost and then lost sales; companies revenue will drop . The system could fall on its face in a race to the bottom once AI replacement become fully actualized. We’re heading into a future were the Western style Corporation could own both the factory and the accommodation of their workers.

Once the US ran businesses with MBAs, all this common sense that people like Ford introduced over 100 years ago were forgotten for charts, graphs and bean counters. How is it all these brilliant university students graduate and run this corporations without even this basic understanding of human nature, work and productivity of labor?

What I took most from this was the cross training aspect, it makes so much sense, and should be that way, I work in IT and it’s no different in my role, but often some jobs can be hamstrung into “I only do this and nothing else” mentality, which for a large majority of jobs is normal, but when you’re in a sector like customer service, retail, client support, etc. It’s so beneficial that all individuals wear multiple hats

Almost ALL problems could be solved simply by making it financially worthwhile for people to SHARE the jobs we would agree we NEED to be done and working much less….there would be no such thing as unemployment for fit and healthy people. There would be no pointless jobs, no useless jobs, no slave jobs.

Zeynep is a Turkish name. Ton? I don’t know, but I suppose it’s Turkish too. Anyway, you have the stunning beauty of a Turkish woman. And I’m so glad that you have succeeded brilliantly since arriving in the States. As for the talk, I really liked the way you presented the common sense behind the philosophy underlying the turnaround of the companies you mentioned. It seems so obvious that most of the time we don’t even think about it. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

A good job doesn’t mean a decent salary but means a whole system created by CEO. Currently, most of employees are unhappy with a sufficient salary in some internet companies in China, where bosses think employees should do all they asked without dignity and respects. I really wish more CEOs, especially in internet teams, could do something changed. We need a better workplace for us and next generations.
