How to Prevent — or Stop — a War | Gabrielle Rifkind | TED
“I’m not a pacifist, but in the end, war is the greatest human rights abuse and does not make the world safer,” says Gabrielle Rifkind, director of the Oxford Process, an organization dedicated to ending armed conflict. She shares how inclusive negotiating strategies can prevent war from breaking out or stop an ongoing conflict —…

Imagine if wars were just a bunch of countries ghosting each other until they had to awkwardly run into one another at the UN.

I share some of her critics on senseless interventions like in Afganistan, but do not hear any useful concrete idea or solution, how to to come to peace in an existing conflict like in the Ukraine. Bevor Putin started the war, many political leaders tried to speak with him, tried to understand him. It didn’t work. He wasn’t seen as a reel enemy bevor in many european countries. Not the fear, that the Ukraine would be a member of the Nato let Putin start the war. The war started, because he was thinking, that the World would not react against him. His fear was, that the Ukrainian exemple would lead to democratic movements in Russia. He was dreaming of new Russian Empire. He wanted to make history. Germany and France were wrong. Only the membership in the Nato could have been a protection for the Ukraine. Rifkind is old enough to follow the war (some say conflict) beetween Israel an Palestine for over 20 Years. There were peace talks in some moments of the history. But on both sides were people, who didn’t really want peace. I speak of politicians and radical groups, not of the normal people. Talking may be sometimes the solution. But it is not everytime working. Talking with Putin was and will not be the solution. Most of the big wars endet not by talking, they endet, because there were one “winner” and one “looser”. Even a normal fight under neighbours in small village can sometimes not be solved by a mediator. Courts will decide in this cases. Beetween states no court with power exists. The UN has spoken clearly his judgment on Russia. Yes, there is no power behind this judgement. But it is now in our all goverments responsibility to beware international rights. If we do not defend these rights, more wars and conflicts will be the consequence.

So we ought to seek compromise between a thief, raper or mugger and his victim? O, please, we have to undestand Jack Reaper! We have to give him a left hand and a liver of his current victim so he will not kill the next one. Genious!
What this speaker DOES NOT understand or TRY REALLY HARD NOT TO SEE is that most modern wars happen because idiocy of greedy maniacs with power and armies of brainwashed fanatics. Every dictator in history tried to solve inner problem by wars. Every empire can exist only invading in other countries. This is what happens with Russia. Putin invaded Ukraine because he WANTED a victorious war and by this become a new Piotr The Greate. Not because he had no other choice.

She is not out of touch. She speaks the truth. Do you know why Germany went to war 2 times? I’ll give you a secret. It’s about money. Why?
France, The Dutch, Spain, and the UK all had overseas colonies. And control of very lucrative trades. What that meant is that Germany and her allies had a much weaker economy and monetary value of their currency versus the other great powers.
It’s the only reason why we fight. Economic power, fair trade, and having access to weapons or a means to change that story.
That’s what she is hinting at but not saying out loud. It’s the truth. England had a huge colony. Spain had huge colonies that sent back literal Spanish Gold. It definitely sparks conflict.
Think Napoleon versus England and Spain. They did not have great overseas colonies.

6:20 Rifkind seems to have history backwards: western governments were talking with Syrian president Assad, during the period where he was already killing his own people in Aleppo during the protests related to the Arab spring. And president Obama was doing everything to avoid to get involved in a war in Syria, till Assad started using chemical weapons on his own people. In this context, please watch a documentary called „corridors of power: Syria“ with a very fitting subtitle „the risk of doing nothing“

Preventing war does not resolve the conflicts, they remain and would continue to lurk. Many conflicts arise from feeling entitled to the past territories, and when a leader of a country states that the objective is to re-unify some states or regain control over some region, that necessarily becomes a conflict. And someone somewhere will always feel like history has been unfair and will dedicate their lives to ‘resolve’ it.. Now how do you solve that?

Very out of touch. First of all October 7th is the 10th month not 7-11… She projects her own values to terror organizations like Hamas who could not care any less about them and are following the ways of Jihad and martyrdom. She offered to empower the U.N, one of the biggest causes to the suffering to everyone in this war. Call me crazy but I don’t think awarding
terror with a country that will only be used to further attack Israel by those who vouched to not rest until Israel is destroyed and radical Islam is everywhere a bad idea.
Wanna see some good policy that will save lives? Put pressure on Hamas to release hostages and surrender. The war would end in 5 minutes but her whole thinking is backwards.

There is the plan of Russians war against Ukraine – remove Putin’s regime. Starting from 1999 when this regime took power in Russia there hasn’t been a single day that Russia was not involved in different wars against other countries. Think about this. And there is no difference whether this is Ukraine, Georgia, Siriya, Chechnya today or somebody else in future – the aggressor is always the same – Russia.

Such a poor conclusions on Russian invasion of Ukraine.
1. NATO membership was never on the table before the 2014, Ukraine had the prohibition of the alliances membership and neutrality mentioned in Constitution;
2. Who cares what on borders of US or russia? Ukraine is a sovereign state, it’s a sovereign right to decide what to do on its own territory
3. Support that was given to Ukraine was not sufficient and pathetic.
It seems like TED is being affected by Russian agents, or I can’t find any other explanations why it allows this Russian shills to participate in this platform meanwhile blocking Ukrainian speakers
