Don’t buy the Surface Laptop or Surface Pro if you plan on using them to play games. These aren’t gaming machines at all. Everything else will be fine, and they will perform even better a couple months down the road after some firmware and app updates.

Say what you will, as a loyal Apple user, I am very dissapointed in newest Ipads. They have great hardware but Ipad OS software is deliberately limited not the hurt Mac sales.
What they don’t know is customers want to take notes with a pen also on a computer and Surface Pro looks like a Ipad Pro killer to me. While trying to protect Mac sales, they will lose from both.
@jaughnekow
June 27, 2024 at 9:06 am
Honestly, they don’t care and a lot of the customers don’t. Unfortunately, this trend will continue

Agree to disagree. I literally bought a new iPad and pencil pro last week. Very happy with them.
The new pencil gestures are absolutely a game changer for quick & fun note taking, and especially drawing.
iPadOS is definitely unable to take advantage of the incredible hardware the M4 chip offers, but it’s lightning fast for everything I’ve ever needed and if I need true powerhouse performance, I’m not looking for a tablet to do that.

I don’t understand why every reviewer is comparing the x elite to the base m3. If it’s Qualcomm laptop flagship chip, it should be compared to apple’s laptop flagship (M3 max). It’s like comparing a Samsung galaxy s24 ultra to the iPhone SE to say it’s better than iPhone.
@JJ-cq6hu
June 27, 2024 at 9:14 am
It is because naming aside, the price for the devices with the Snapdragon X Elite match devices with base M3.
Qualcomm said the X Elite is a direct competitor for M3.
X Plus is a direct competitor for intel and amd chips made for portable devices.
@alexs.5107
June 27, 2024 at 9:14 am
No, You must take into account the price and the specs of the laptop for an equitable comparison. Taking that into account, the MBA M3 is the right candidate.
Qualcomm’ s chip is definitely not as good as high end apple M chips but for a first generation of chips, they have punched way above their weight and that’s good for consumers: Competition. Intel and AMD, if they don’t reinvent themselves, they re in trouble. Later on, Apple will also have some Competition for its high-end MacBooks. In the end consumers win.
@ocanica3184
June 27, 2024 at 10:05 am
@@JJ-cq6hu X Plus is a competitor to M2 most other reviewers agree. Why compare it to x86 when a direct comparison with a similar architecture can be made instead? The Surface Laptop is even priced the same as an M2 Macbook Air at $999.
@JJ-cq6hu
June 27, 2024 at 10:25 am
@@ocanica3184 I can compare it because the competition is the x86 chips by AMD and Intel. Snapdragon is not just competing with Apple. They are competing with intel and AMD as well.. Especially AMDs chips where they are pretty power efficient if set to the battery saver mode

So this laptop wouldn’t be good for running CAD software? Or engineering software?
@jasonsfalsetto7343
June 27, 2024 at 9:31 am
I’m using autocad 2025 on the base Surface laptop 7 and it works extremely well. I believe they’re using emulation to run it now, but Autodesk is working on a native ARM Version. Hurts battery life but easily gets 8-10 hours of battery with CAD on full brightness.
@williamcopeland2617
June 27, 2024 at 9:49 am
As of now I would say no. When more firmware and app updates are released, I would say yes. So, give it a good 6 months and these PC’s should perform significantly better.

i think just the fact that people are comparing the surface pro 11 to actual laptops instead of the ipad pro says a lot. For tab users, this is an amazing product. Also, hope manufacturers like asus add option to set custom power drain to save even more battery 🤞

I would rank the Surface Laptop 7 ahead of the Surface Pro. Far better better life and easier to place on your lap. It seems it is only good for office workers, programmers using C#/Python/Typscript, and general web browsing. Basically, typical Microsoft users minus gamers.
Photo & video editors are better off staying with MacBooks or Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i (Intel version). Gamers are better off with Ryzen CPU laptops.

Why don’t tech reviewers ever try holding the Surface Pro with one hand? if anyone is reading this just know that the lack of bezels make it almost impossible to hold like an actual tablet.
@JoshG_CNET
June 27, 2024 at 12:32 pm
You’re not wrong. However, and I can only speak for myself, I never use it like that. It’s a 13-inch tablet with a built-in kickstand, so I use it sitting up on its kickstand or flat on a desk/table or my lap. When I do use it handheld, I usually grip the keyboard cover.

They compare by price range, a 16 inch m3 max 36 gb ram 1 tb is 3,500 dollars, the 15 inch surface laptop on the 12 core elite with 32 gbs ram and 1 tb is 2099 dollars, you can literally almost buy two high end surface laptops for one M3 Max Mac

The short of it is the iGPU isn’t for demanding games. We played some Hades 2, for example, and that was OK, but that’s about its limits.
@rowaystarco
June 27, 2024 at 2:14 pm
Not crazy good. Compatibility issues and the iGPU is not super powerful. But lighter ARM ported games could run okay I think. Kinda disappointed Microsoft hasn’t shown any initiative in compiling their own games for ARM.

Because there are morons that are willing to pay these absurd amounts of money on them.
@JoshG_CNET
June 27, 2024 at 12:58 pm
So these new Copilot PCs, esp. those with the Elite chips in them, are going to be btwn $1,200 and $1,700 depending on the configs. Going with the Plus chip will get you down to $1K and then I’d say just wait for a good sale. That goes for Intel and AMD laptops, too. Lately, the things that are driving up the prices are the displays, i.e., going with OLED instead of LCD and getting a discrete GPU, which always means more $$$.

really it comes down to needs and how you want to use it. The Laptop’s battery life is noticeably longer and the keyboard and touchpad are better. I’m a big fan of 2-in-1s though. I like being able to get the keyboard out of the way so I can use just the display, whether that’s with the Pen or a full-size keyboard and mouse, and I prefer the Pro for just quickly stashing in bag for my train commute.

I’m returning my new iPad for one of these, and selling my MacBook Air. As someone who is constantly doing math by hand, drawing scientific diagrams in chem / bio, and needs to use 365, this thing is a great device. I didn’t get the OLED because I really don’t need it, but I’m still very happy that they added such a good webcam for Zoom / Teams. The only significant change I want to see is better pen performance.

Surface Pro 11 / Surface Laptop 7 certainly do not have 20 hours battery life, i tested them both extensively.
Max 6 hours tops with a lot of settings tweaked such as brightness to bare minimum, kill certain services, bt+wifi disabled….
Performance is also piss poor on battery, and gets very hot even when connected to the power supply this thing throttles faster then a Ferrari can go from 1 to 100km/h
Also the Surface doesn’t come with keyboard and pen, you’ll need to cough up $300 extra for the keyboard+pen.
To sum up some costs:
– Surface Pro 11 16gb/512gb = $1,300 usd
– Surface pro 11 keyboard+pen = $300 usd
That’s $1,600 usd folks !
You can get a Macbook Air M3 for $1,350 usd and still run Windows faster than on the Surface in emulation software like Parallels.
Also the performance like i said is really bad, also on the laptop version.
Read the reviews on Amazon or other websites, lots of people are returning it and there are already refurbs being sold of those Snapdragon devices.
Do not trust reviews as many are just directly sponsored my Microsoft/Qualcomm.
The rollout is a big fail seeing the piss poor performance, battery life !
