She shares what she learned trying to convince people to vote against their political party in a recent election and shows why telling a better story about democracy is key to bridging the ideological divide.

I don’t vote by party. I vote on issues. Neither of the 2 main parties support Democracy. The Democrats are not even having a real Presidential primary this year. And we keep dropping in the list of top democracies in the World. My candidates will usually not win, but at least I’m voting for candidates and issues who are fighting for the right things. Maybe society will eventually catch up. Maybe they won’t. But I’m not going to go backwards to fit in.

I’m registered as NPP (No Party Preference) for a reason! I have no interest in tribalism. It causes too many bad things in society. I don’t need to fit in and can think for myself.

Hilarious talk. Basically TDS cope by a never Trumper who wants to use social engineering to save ‘our democracy’ and not the federal republic.

Trump appeals to many non republican voters and brought them into the party, effectively turning the republican party into the MAGA party and driving a split with the never Trumpers.
Trump supporters care little for democracy? How about the democrat voters who routinely ignore their own party’s corruption or crimes.? With the DNC shafting Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton being fed debate questions or not being prosecuted for deleting government records (but Trump is a criminal for keeping his presidential records right?)

The reason even republican’s who don’t like trump (vote for him with trepidation) recoil at attacks coming at him from outside of the party? Because even they can recognize the blatant political persecution and double standards for what it is and feel the need to stand on principle.

Now do a talk on blacks voting democrat against their own interest.

Well we can demonize the other side and label them anti-democracy, but that doesn’t solve anything. This TED talk plays right into tribalism by framing the people that voted for Trump in a negative light. We can break it down by asking “why is there a desire to vote for Trump in the first place?” Still, no one is understanding the underlying needs of the people that voted for Trump. Many of the lower and middle-class opportunities are being moved to other countries because of cheaper labor costs and material cost, leaving a lot of U.S. cities without those opportunities, and those same people looking for a politician for changes in their own circumstances. This is another tone-deaf video blaming the voters instead of the negative circumstances they are living in (which also plays directly into the hands of people consolidating wealth that is undermining the U.S. labor force).

The biggest threat to democracy are the democratics themselves, I don’t mean the Democrat party but people.

The biggest threat to democracy if your in favour of a democratic political system is systemic inequality and injustice. It’s in the elitist class’s best interest to optimize/fix the ratio of educated vs uneducated, powerful vs powerless. It’s inherently built into the system iteself.

Famously even Aristotle expressed a very similar concern about democracy and it’s flaws, that was obviously a long time ago. I’m not anti democratic but im not necessarily pro democracy either, we should ask ourselves if there are better systems to be had. We’re starting to ask ourselves, Are we maximizing the utility of our ideas, objects, people and government?
