For me, the level of trust between family members is really high.
And I would sacrifice my own life for them.
I work with my teammates using the same principle.

Your real family members won’t require you to sacrifice your own life for them everyday.
Your teammates who you treat as family members does, if your team does anything important.
That’s exactly why people get burnt out.

My husband worked for his sister and brother in law for about 8 years. In the end they definitely were taking advantage of him and had been bullying him because he didn’t want to become management. even though they often called him in emergency situations in the middle of the night, his manager was responsible for it but didn’t puck up the phone he still didn’t want that responsibly. After he got sick they started bullying him….. ignoring what the company doctor said and over worked him….. they even printed a letter from his lawyer to the owners and hung it up in the office for everyone to read.
Never work for family if you can avoid it. Even your sister could betray you and let her husband bullying you to try to get you to quite because they have to legal reason to fire you.

You’re expected to sacrifice your wellbeing for the good of your family, but that doesn’t happen very often in an average family.
But at work, situations happen day in and day out. If you treat your colleagues as family, you’ll be required to sacrifice your wellbeing day in and day out. That’s probably the quickest way to get burnt out.
As for boundaries, the management wants to break and blur it so that you would work harder and work more for them.
Treating work as family has everything good for the companies, and don’t have any benefits to the workers.
Don’t let your work be your whole identity.

And just like many families there is dysfunction. It’s Bullshit. A job is transactional. Companies don’t care about employees. A loving family doesn’t get rid of a family member just to make more money. Family? Really? Maybe more like a mafia family.

✝️
*For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”*

With a growing number of companies hiring on mental health services, I would suggest finding a service not connected to your company. In the end of the day the ones your company hires report to the company. Also I see some “sessions” coming through that are undisguised company rallies and not in any way out for the employees wellbeing. If you need it, get helth services for yourself, but make sure they are there for you and not just to get you back on the treadmill quicker for the companies bottom line.

I don’t know where you’re from, but in my country there are laws against this. Employers are not even allowed why you are sick, only the health service which is an intermediate company with no affiliation to your company apart from them being chosen to handle their employees’ sickness and such. Whatever I tell that health service remains between us unless explicitly approved by me and me only. This goes for a simple cold all the way to chronic diseases and mental health issues. Of course, I’ve come to experience that it does help when you’re not totally throwing up a wall and just say “I’m sick” when having other issues, but it’s up to you how much you want to share. I too went through a burnout and somewhat of a depression and at that point all my employer knew was that I was having a burnout, nothing more. I picked up a great contact for a psychologist thanks to the health service, but without my employers knowledge. All that was shared with them was an expected date at which I was most likely to be able to work again and how my reintegration would work, nothing more.

working in childcare definitely is an environment where they try to say “we’re like family” but then really overwork you and undervalue you. It’s definitely a phrase that psychologically manipulates you and burns you out. I definitely have been burnt out from that and have started setting boundaries myself, while also trying to find a different job.
