Waiting for iphone making similar phone…. The price tag could be three times the kidney price in tge market 😂

Until there are foldable phones that are as durable as rigid devices, and they figure out how to eliminate that terrible crease, I’m staying far away from these gimmicky things.

Shame. Competition in the fold/flip market would be good for the consumer.

Shame that they thought $800 wasn’t competitive. Personally I think there was probably room.

Samsung phones goes in sale all the time. Infact I already saw it on sale at best buy for $800. TCL made a good business decision or else it would of got crush by Samsung.

It’s a shame. As much as I love Samsung’s Z series, competition is always good.

    Foldables are pointless.

  7. Tim Brockwell

    September 10, 2021 at 6:09 pm

Foldable phones seem like a gimmick to me. I can’t think of any real advantage over a rigid body phone, other than the “cool” factor I guess. There are a lot of disadvantages though, like less durability and that God awful crease right in the middle of the screen. It’s nice that the price has come down a bit, but there is still no compelling reason to switch to a foldable phone at this point.

When sitting on the chair, driving, I feel uncomfortable and I put the phone out of my pocket and sometimes I forget it. I think there are millions of people who want a foldable

TCL phones were really cool back in 2009 the flip phones had more things than other flip phones

    • NNN

      September 10, 2021 at 10:19 pm

Why does everything from this hinge design to to the corners of the creases that protect it, look like the z flip 3?

  9. Pat4Niners

    September 10, 2021 at 6:53 pm

Michael Fisher covered this. I would never buy this even if was released for $700-$800. I don’t trust TCL. I’m aware of TCL since 2013. They produce TVs. This phone needed a bigger cover display.

I lived in the Philippines from 2011-2016. I lived right next to a huge mall. Connected to it. It had an entire floor selling phones. Stores for HTC and LG right next to each other. I don’t trust TCL. Sorry.

Right now, I’m trying to find a Razr 5G for under $500. I wish Motorola dropped the price by 50-60% already. It’s a year old. I prefer brand new. Only an finite amount of flips at 200K.

I’m starting to love my Flip 3 but there are software bugs I need to deal with daily. Right now, my YouTube app seems to be freezing up. Just random glitches happening. This is how it is with new tech.

what did samsung pay you for that hatchet job? it would be nice to see someone other than samsung making anything new.. their software is absolutely atrocious, and to be completely honest, verizon is a sad shadow of the network they used to be. be more concerned about what runs on tmobile’s 5g network if you want to be “future proof”

i think what cements this decision is the simple question “would you rather get a z flip 3 or the chicago flip?” almost everyone would rather just get the samsung

    • josiah

      September 11, 2021 at 7:33 pm

The biggest problem is that I never knew TCL existed until now. The company doesn’t have a reputation and trying radical concepts won’t help either.

  23. rubenrar1

    September 10, 2021 at 11:47 pm

I think having a phone that folds like that is a good idea because if phones are getting bigger than it’s going to be harder to put in your pocket depending on what pants you’re wearing. We got more screen but now we have to fold the screen because we got more screen hahaha

Interesting that “Chicago” was also Microsoft’s original code word for Windows 95. I wonder whether TCL was aware of that. Maybe they were, and chose the name for its “game-changing” implications. But whatever you want to say about Windows 95, at least it was ultimately released.

What a bunch of copycats. I would still pick Samsung. Samsung’s camera sensor and features are like no other. Also Samsung’s display is the best. And Samsung spends more on R&D than any phone company on earth. So other companies wait until Samsungs technology is available on these new models and then make their own and tweak it but this is completely identical.

Like a lot of the comments here, I also echo the disappointment that there isn’t enough competition for these new designs. TCL’s been working hard to try and stand out with their other phones these last couple of years, I hope that they continue to persevere and come out with more devices!

    TCL released it but
    Low end CPU
    With non waterproof
    With cheap design
    Tried to offer $899
Just gave up. Better than wasting time.

I really hope the immense success of the Z Flip 3 will spur a lot more competition in the foldable market. Right now, it’s basically Samsung vs. Motorola, and the RAZR’s already starting to look like a kid’s toy compared to Samsungs newest Z generation. It’s a shame TCL is a completely new player in the smartphone business, and just didn’t want to risk immediately ruining their reputation with their first major release. In an alternate Universe, the Chicago could have been a big hit. Here’s hoping they eventually catch up and be a serious competitor in the future.
