School can be rife with stress, anxiety, panic attacks and even burnout — but there’s often no formal policy for students who need to prioritize their well-being. Hailey Hardcastle explains why schools should offer mental health days and allow students time to practice emotional hygiene without stigma. Follow along to learn how she and a team of fellow teens transformed their advocacy into law.

Isn’t skipping class, not doing your homework and going shopping with your extra financial aid money like taking a mental health day for students?

Mental health days definitely helped me a lot . I have anxiety and could get overwhelmed very easily . My mum was happy for me to have the occasion day off as long as I was missing nothing important at school that day and caught up at home . Always gave me a sense of control again.

Man schools don’t need those days, they are nothing compared to Bachelors, Masters or Doctor degrees which are way more serious in terms of deadlines and mental challenges. Kids constantly socialise and have fun together in schools, most don’t even do homeworks come on… And don’t tell me about suicide and mental health because my country Lithuania is the most suicidal in whole Europe. Instead better think about university students some of which suffer from monetary issues as well, rather than children in schools who are learning the basic skills for life and are looked after by parents.

So a day off is the solution? I disagree it should be programs on how to be building habits, not taking time off when you feel like it.

This is actually a great system because you can catch up with how well the students mental health are. In my country, Korea, they only made a classroom called ‘we-class’ and just put a teacher in there and wait for the students to come. It’s passive, and doesn’t do much. All it does they put a bunch of toys… and a LITTLE bit of counseling NOT TO DISTURB SCHOOL WORK…And the students think only dumb students go there. The point is that they should take it more seriously and make an active move. Also, in Korea, everyone think resting for mental health sounds stupid, which is discouraging… But we can always change and thank you for giving me insight about how to take care of students mental health.^_^

I remember 9th grade, I’d had a rough month school-wise, we suffered a loss within the family and a test I was woefully unprepared for was coming up. My mom noticed how stressed I was and allowed me to take a day off, calling me in as sick. I had a day to relax and catch up on several things. It is strange, how something like not going to school, deviating from the daily schedule for a bit, helped me feel better.

Now with the pandemic and having school online, I never feel like I can take a day off and have suffered not just one, but two panic attacks in the last two months, my first and second ever. If there’s no set routine to take a step back from, things get harder to manage, and I’ve never wanted to go back to school this desperately, just to get a day away from my head.

Mental health days are so necessary. One day, I was home and realized my brother didn’t go to school. When I asked him why he didn’t go, he said he felt sad and asked if he could just hung out with me. I was really surprised. He didn’t tell me why he was sad but I tried to cheer him up as much as I could.

It’s a tough area in the subject of mental health, if it’s done right it can work, but it can affect students in a negative way if done in a lazy way… it’s the tough love versus being gentle argument… not easy to know what’s right in each situation…

Don’t need mental health days. That’s what the weekend is for. There should be ZERO homework. The way we teach students needs to change. And what we teach needs updating. The world doesn’t need EVERYONE to have a degree. In fact, id say we need more skilled labor. Teach our kids what’s to REALLY be expected after high school, and get back into teaching trades in 9th or 10th grade. I understand SOME kids have truly special needs, but if we start coddling EVERY kid in that same way, I expect more harm than good will come of it.

I teach secondary English and I use my sick and personal days off for mental health days at least once a quarter. When I get tired or run down, I take a day and just use it to relax and get into a good mindset moving forward- students should absolutely be able to do this too. Over the last few years there has been movement for better mental health in schools and this idea, along with many others, could be a step in the right direction.

Holding everyone’s hand and treating them like infants is just going to create a society of babies. We should be addressing the things that would cause “mental health days” to be necessary. If a student has an actual mental health condition (diagnosed by a doctor) they can get help through existing programs.

I doubt if there has ever been a definitive study on the value of formal schooling. At least we wait until the pre-frontal cortex starts developing but beyond that science has not been fully utilised. I would suggest that only the four ‘R’ are actually required to be taught in a structured way; and then only to an entry level understanding. Booster lessons are available for any advanced levels of understanding. Those four are readin’ ‘ritin’, ‘rithmetic and reasonin’. The last being examples of logical fallacies, pitfalls, the human brain’s flawed processes etc.

Armed with the core basics a student could be exposed to real-life applications of each demonstrating compound uses of the four. This does not always require formal sit-down lessons and can rely on the natural youthful desire to be stronger each day. Because the only discipline worth having is self-discipline. The same internalisation applies to motivation, curiosity, expectation… Thus evaluation is replaced by a loose application of the Socratic method. Unruly, less motivated kids can be at liberty to play all day which is in itself a valuable teaching tool. Thus their young lives are not burdened with ill-informed adult expectations and science can be employed to improve the facilities, the lessons, delivery and material etc. Teachers are mostly replaced with mechanics, farmers, nurses, managers, clerks, professionals of all descriptions.

Kids are naturally motivated but so far we have failed to identify the human way to elicit the best from each mind that begins the journey into full development. The core passions of each child can find its expression and a better product will be the result.

We do not need mental health days, we need philosophy in the schools. First students of all kinds need to know why they actually need to learn and how decisions made in the youth life infuence the future. Mental health days are only days off – so minor impact in general. But unfortunately (for the business and politicians) philosophy would also help people understand all the relations between different facts and figures. People would become more self-aware with all of the consequences of this fact.

I agree with this. As someone who is a full time student and works full time as well, mental health is a must. At work, I have the option to unplug and have my “mental health check ins” by using my PTO. However, schools are not the same be it in Elementary to college/higher education. There was only 1 professor/teacher that I have had in my life (I am 28) that had mentioned how important self care and mental health is important. This is how students can do better and be happier with themselves – not to mention be more motivated and feel like their mental health actually matters.

I was an excellent student, but I struggled with my mental health, migraines, terrible periods, and hypoglycemia.

I was over-worked and overwhelmed in college during the 90’s. I made a visceral, very real attempt to end it all, too, because… I barely had any friends, and all of my instructors focused on everything I WASN’T doing.

I ended up in the hospital, stomach being pumped. So.. yup, they “brought me back”. After that, I was treated with a mild apathy and mostly ignored.

It’s now 25 years later… and… I’m pretty much in the same position. No friends. No partner (she just left me, mostly due to her own mental illnesses)… and I’m treated with a sort of mild neglect and apathy.

    So little has changed.

    Interesting.

In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia’s first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it’s fostering healing in return.

Hundreds of millions of migrant workers travel within their countries to seek out means of survival — often leaving behind all they know for months or even years. Many face poverty and exploitation, and they need a robust social safety net to protect them, says migrant advocate and 2023 Audacious Project grantee Ashif Shaikh. He shares how his grassroots organization Migrants Resilience Collaborative is making life-changing benefits like social security and health care accessible to those who need them while also amplifying migrant voices — paving the way towards a world that supports the workers actually building it. (This ambitious idea is a part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.)
