Why Facebook shut off news for Australia

The site blacks out news outlets in Australia over proposed legislation that would require Facebook to pay news publishers for content. Here’s how such rules could affect you, and why other governments may follow suit.

Small media companies DON’T GET ANYTHING from this bargaining code. In fact, it will hurt them and possibly drive them to disappear slowly but surely. The big media companies are also asking for Google and Facebook’ RANKING ALGORITHM, meaning they will abuse it to dominate content people see on their feeds & front pages. That will drive less and less traffics to those small independent content creators, and those big media companies will dominate the information we come across once again, just like when there were only TVs and newspapers.

You also need to mention that Murdoch Media empire owns about %80 of all the print media in Australia, so we essentially have a monoploy of press that is pro liberal and anti labour… Murdoch wants to get paid for online content being shared…
Its more complex than just saying FB banned news content…

I think this is a very good thing. Facebook has become far too central and has way too much influence, Google has become much of the same for the search world. I myself stoped using Facebook some 3 years ago and closed my account in the past few months. I find myself missing out on nothing. monopolies and duopolies are very bad for everyone. Let Facebook fight, and with any luck it will cause some people to open their eyes.

I had already sent a personal video on Facebook to Mark Zuckerberg basically saying do not bend to the government because we still need the royal Commission into Murdoch media who has control over the liberal National party who are in control of the Parliament currently and the only reason this bill is coming into play is because Rupert Murdoch is losing share of revenue to these two platforms and the word Newton’s third law of motion means they have to take notice

We are coming up to an election later this year and this whole drama is going to blow up some corrupt politicians. No longer will they be able to use the Facebook algorithm to sway voters.
No news is good news! Much of what we receive now is copy/paste journalism anyway, with not many paid to actually get into any depth of a story.

The news media bargaining code is an absolute joke, its only purpose is the Liberal party protecting News Corp and other media conglomerates that they have in their back pocket. Facebook and Google need regulation but this is the worst possible way of going about it.

Facebook aren’t asking news organisations for their content? These news organisations are choosing to post their content on the Facebook platform and want to get paid for it, is this not extortion? ‘I’ll upload my stuff to your website and you can pay me for it whether you like it or not’, WTF is this BS. All involved are scummy organisations so whatever, who cares, don’t use Facebook n never will, don’t pay much attention to the mainstream media organisations either because as for the most part it’s filled with opinion pieces masquerading as news content. Either way some obscenely rich organisation gets richer out of this and us ‘commoners’ adapt, the end.

I don’t blame FB for walking away. They are providing a platform for all these media sites to get the word out to the public for free. Of course free is not good enough, they want to be payed as well. Australia’s population is so small that it is not worth FB time to deal with them.

Rupert murdochs puppets are at it again!
Australia is governed/ruled by the murdoch & Stokes families (Rudd & turnbull know)
When the govt in Australia doesn’t go in the direction these families want Australia to go… our politicians (in office – many dual citizens) get summoned to Rupert murdoch’s office in america (ask lachlan! he knows his father’s deep dark racist motives)… Most Australian news outlets are narrated & owned by rupert murdoch and kerry Stokes’ media empires… ABC is getting dodgy too!
    (Be careful Miriam🙏)
By the way it’s crazy that Australia has dual citizens in government dictating to Australians how to work, live, eat, sleep & play… then after politics they get to run off back to their motherlands after getting rich in our affairs😶
    Bloody ridiculous!

With Murdoch’ support, the Morrison Government won the 2019 election. Therefore, to pay back, it makes the law to force Facebook and Google to give some money to Murdoch’s media in Australia. Mark Zuckerberg was right when he decided not to give Murdoch a cent. Mark was entitled to remove Australian news from his platform. He did not attack anyone, unlike the politicians who were unmasked.

FB move is awesome. The media company should be the one who pay for the privilege of appearing on FB to start with, let alone asking for FB to pay for their appearance. FB move did just that, go away all the news link, you have no right to be here.

I would do just that if my tenant starts asking me to pay thinking it is their rights to live in my property and starts asking me to pay them.

Media company should be happy now, no?

I am not a big fan of big tech throwing their weight around, however, this does not make sense to me. Google, for example, send readers to the website of the media company. There you are subject to that sites ads. Having their content on Google is to their benefit. If Google simply did not offer news, the media companies would be in big trouble. The claims against Facebook are mostly as confusing to me, however, makes more sense because you read the articles in a Facebook browser, which serves Facebook ads. This is a classic case of governments over-reaching.

People are getting sick of it no matter who they are….so if they want to continue as a business, they’d better start following the law….break up their Monopoly, start charging a fee, observe privacy laws, and keep their noses out of everyone’s business! This argument only makes sense on paper and without any context

    • Carlos

      February 21, 2021 at 5:21 pm

@Kay Nine, the news companies are trying to use the media bargaining code as a means of extracting want retroactive compensation. That is not right way to go about it.
You cannot force an individual nor a company to pay for a product or service they do consume or benefit from. If Facebook does not use news content it would be unfair to force Facebook to pay for such content. Why are we not outraged at Uber for not compensating news companies for using their content?
If we take it one step further, should media companies charge every Australian for their content, whether they use it or not?
Since Facebook use of news content is not part of its core business, In essence, Facebook’s response is appropriate, and expected.

  64. Wezzie0

    February 21, 2021 at 4:07 pm

Why haven’t the news sites put paying restrictions on their articles. You can’t read the Globe and mail without paying. This is a government affront to take down Facebook because paying all countries in the world would make them unprofitable. Facebook was not designed to be a news outlet or a media house, even fact checking fake news should not be their job. The government is extremely late in regulating social media platforms. If they want to regulate news then they should restrict any news on any social media platforms

  65. Kay Nine

      1. You make the content

      3. You get paid in ad revenue (not by YouTube directly).

Unless you go by TV network rules where they pay you for your content, but they keep the ads that they insert.

This is a classic example of a pusher (drug dealer) withholding the “stuff” so that the customer will give in to demands when withdrawal symptoms get worse.

Zuckerberg is nothing more than an adolescent drug dealer who gets angry when people start to push back and start to better their lives without his “product”. Something tells me that he will be getting a lot more push-back in the coming weeks…

The logic is backward, the message FB is sending is that it does not depend on news content for its revenue and it really isn’t. It’s the other way around, news outlets need Facebook and google to refer readers to their websites.
If FB doesn’t want to pay for links to any specific content it’s wrong to try and force them to allow links to such content to be shared on their platform.
