YES! We waste so much energy, much of it could be diverted to carbon removal. Climeworks’ first plant, for example, uses the heat from trash incineration.
Up to half of the energy produced by coal and nuclear is wasted because they always need to operate at peak capacity.

So does climeworks win the prize when their new plant comes online? 4000 tonnes a year is 11 tonnes a day…

      Pulling carbon from the skies,
      sequester and neutralize! Yeah!

I need to sing a new song about carbon removal….

I get the thought that pursuing improving green energy is a better use of time but I think they both play an important role. We should clean up the mess already made if possible, while continuing to improve our options for green energy for the future.

the only way to fight gas is with another gas, and thats by releasing another gas that can bond with carbon and turn into something that isnt harmful. If thats not possible, we just have to look to knew sources of energy and stop emitting so much emissions, if we dont then well we get our extinction level event sooner than we would of like, sucks for us.

I feel like a massive section of carbon capture was overlooked here, there are many more technologies that remove carbon straight from emission sources such as amine based carbon capture from flue gas. These are likely the only way to meet emission targets in power generation and manufacturing industries quickly. Switching to renewables only solves the pollution from power generation, and it’s still going to take a long time to make the switch. Also power generation is by no means the only polluting industry, so you’re still only solving 1/3 of the problem. Carbon capture isn’t just taking carbon from air, it’s also taking out carbon directly from polluting sources, so I think this professor is being very short sighted here.

Without CO2 there will be no plants on earth, also no plant dependent animals, like us humans, for example… CO is the problem, I learned that in…. grade 3??? 🤔… But anywhooooooo, maybe Carbon capture is not a bad idea? We can not make more oxygen, there is only so much, also true for carbon, isn’t it?

    Gotta capture them all!

  52. Captive

    February 26, 2021 at 8:54 am

To capture all the carbon we produce each hour we would need have to invest nearly 20% of the worlds energy. Also it’s way too expensive and would cost more than the entire US military costs each year. It would be way easier just to produce less carbon and use biofuels

  53. Rote Pille

    February 26, 2021 at 9:48 am

That is a big waste of money. He should have invested half the money in CO2 removal and the other half in a lobby to influence politicians and the parlament like the damn old big industries do but not to corupt our planet like they do but to make the world a better place.

As an engenieer I never will support Carbon Capturing System. Next 30 years. Its only for non scientifc marketing and “greenwashing” today.

Every process you add evolves entropy, means if you add CCS at the and of process chain it will need energy. As if Energy in our modern world is based by 90% on Corbon we produce a lot more CO₂ with CCS than less.! And thats just true.

CCS in Alkali-Filtering shown in the video is about 5-10 times more Energyintensive than you got by releasing it to Atmosphere in a combustion engin or methane turbine.
It would be better save the Energy and use it directly for consumption.
Benefit = 500% to 1000% from start investment (basic energy thats burned in the CCS process).

If the world is totaly powerd by carbon free energy sources, it makes some kind of sensce, to use overproduktions from solar and wind sources for capture carbon.

    But only overproducion!
And only in carbon free countrys!
(Or countrys that are on a low 10% carbon based energy level can use CCS in some situations.)

Remembere we are still on 80-90% Corbon!!

If you catch it directly on exouhsts it gets a bit better. But rembere every car needs a CO₂ Tank that has to brought back and get emptied while you fill up gas on the other hand.
Does that work,…. no, people will by gase but not 100% pay back CO₂.

And direct capture although needs a lot of energy and resources.

In summ CCS is usless for most applications, at least nexr 30 years.

    Nice marketing video for exxon?
With very bad explanation of the true chemistry and physical energycycle.

First Semesters engeneering and naturesciences +Physiks.
    Please take some courses first.

Elon Musk is a human not o prophet.
Not everything he says might be true or will get futur. And using an action or sentence of him out of context is influencing by misstreat his popularity. He realy has some very very good technical ideas, don’t mix it up with Investor and Wallstreet nonsens.

    Greetings from Germany
