What a load of bs. Capitalism is precisely the system that punishes “weirdos trying new stuff” and rewards “squares putting capital into what works”. The pinnacle of corporate innovation is the iPhone. Meanwhile, where did the Internet come from?

We need a hybrid system of socialism and capitalism. Human rights should not be privatized, and profits belong to the people- not corporate billionaires.

That “hybrid” is called social democracy

We need capitalism done correctly. In a capitalist society the government is only there to regulate and is not a player in the market. The United States government is a hybrid done very poorly. Socialism will never work because there will never be a group of humans all willing to sacrifice in their benevolence for the benefit of others. Capitalism works when government does not decide what is allowed to fail and is not providing a large number of good and services. The discussion is appreciated. This is my input as some stupid millennial.

@nater tater
I love how so many people act as if socialism will never work while capitalism is breaking down into fascism right before our eyes.
Just look at the Netherlands, they’ve got socialism down pretty well.. And even America has adopted socialism, albeit to a lesser degree. Schools, roads, and libraries aren’t exactly funded by private corporations after all!
Capitalism by itself is objectively unethical, for basic human needs will not be met lest one can fess up enough money. Capitalism also aims to exploit the working class as much as possible so that the oligarchy can make ungodly profits. Fundamentally speaking, capitalism is a broken system and we cannot allow it to attain dominance.

@Quinn Garcia there is a balance of capitalism and socialism, America is functioning this way now.

Very rich people listening to her. I’m sure she’s rich compared to normal Americans. The rich is what what she’s calling weird. She should give up her wealth and then do a Ted Talk.

🧠The vast majority of countries in the world have MIXED economies where the police and military are socialized (funded by taxes by and for the entire population) even in the USA. -Economic policies globally decide the ratio between the private (prioritizing the lucrative side) and the public (prioritizing the non-profit over the lucrative).
philippe brehier
April 17, 2023 at 12:13 pm
I’m not for total socialism (the leftiest one, where there is no hierarchy), because like absolut capitalism, it seems quite impossible to realise.
BUT, when you have socialized budgets of military and police, but not socialized budgets of water, food, education, healthcare, etc. I can’t help myself to think that it’s kind of an autoritarian way to protect the wealthiest people from the majority that were not as lucky the day of their birth.

Well, weirdos have figured this out already:
-Tax billionaires out of existence
-Profits belong to the people
-Human rights are *not* conditional
And with the 2030 deadline for climate change fast approaching, we _need_ drastic action to reduce emissions before then. If that means bankrupting mega-corporations into oblivion, banning air travel, or halting new developments.. So be it.
The consequences of not doing so are indeed apocalyptic, so practically *anything* is on the table here.

April 17, 2023 at 12:16 pm
Yea totally, capitalism is the only system that weird people exist in, we all now how in any other system, people get microchips in their brain to kill their individuality and free thought.
And in capitalism, there is lots of room for new ideas to come in, grow, and flourish to their final form, without needing to worry about competing against already established items in the market, or lack of investor funding, or even other priorities of the inventors lives (such as needing to hold a steady job to pay the bills since start up phases dont give instant returns)
oh, this is all sarcastic by the way. capitalism favors generational wealth and already established markets and actually greatly resists change that happens anywhere else, serving to make the rich even richer and dominate this monopoly board, unless someone happens to be insanely luck and land on free parking again and again

Never heard so much tripe in all my days, market mechanisms, price efficiency and the fear of failing built and allowed our success in the west. MMT which is basically what she is proposing has produced nothing but crisis and repeated failure.

We don’t need solutions that cater to the “market”, because those ideas will ALWAYS work against our common interests. We can’t solve climate change by making the 1% more money!

Very backwards. Under today’s capitalism thats optimized at exploitation, there is no opportunity for the average person to try new things and fail. Meritocracy is a capitalist myth (see: Elon Musk). Guess what system has safety nets for people trying new ideas without risking their livelihoods? Socialism.

Hmm, capitalism is part of the behavioral biology of all living things, starting with bacteria, and these fantasies are demagoguery…
What happened to people, why did everyone decide that fictional principles not based on the nature of human behavior could function, everyone went crazy?

The idea that someone can hold as much wealth as millions of people is very wrong! It’s against human nature and natural order.
When a small number of people amass great levels of wealth, then this wealth gives them influence in politics. Your democracy will be gradually stolen from you and you become USA today!
Homeless under every bridge, failing infrastructure, hegemonic empire wars, division and ignorance as a result of being propagandized by the Mainstream media that are owned by the same elite. They divide the people and rule them without fear, because neighbors hate each other as if theirs vote ruined the country!!

April 18, 2023 at 5:17 am
And when the state is too interventionist, like it’s the case in Spain where I live for example, where taxes are so suffocating for the small enterpreneur, new ideas just don’t make it off the ground and since small business or start-ups fail to even be able to start the status quo of the big ones that already exists is mantained and nothing changes. So yea, capitalism promotes change and progress, and a humane-leaning capitalism is actually our best bet at making a better world.

Literally just capitalist propaganda, unfiltered, unhidden. Capitalism is not “emergent”, it was invented by the aristocracy as a means of survival and is enforced by the miniscule percentage who benefit from it.

In nature mutations comes from all parts of the living organism. In capitalism, ideas come from the same people.

A social capitalistic system where needs like food, water, & medical needs are all socialized, essentials like soap, toilet paper, & cleaning supplies are are all capped at at 500% mark up & 9% tax, & luxury items like premade food, cars, & electronics are on the capitalistic side of things would work best. Some things would depend on the situation like medical needs. If you’re dying all your medical needs are socialized but if you’re not dying now you have to pay out of pocket or get insurance.
