Emergency SOS via Satellite on the iPhone 14 is basically your 911 backup.

When Apple announced the iPhone 14 series, some of the biggest features were things you can’t see like an internal redesign that make repairs cheaper and easier, or tools that most people will hopefully neve have to use, like Car Crash Detection. One feature that stood out was Emergency SOS via Satellite which, when you or someone you love is stranded or injured and out of range of cell service, lets you use a satellite to text an emergency dispatcher. Apple invited us to a live demonstration, and we came away very impressed.

Apple’s new safety feature is now live in the US and Canada.

My friend Norm Jones engineers at DOD made the US military communications satellite system. He put one up in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It was the only communication for a time. The iPhone could be communication when regular systems are down.

It would be great if we could find out where our clients are precisely within the city, even if the cell service is unavailable. Hopefully we can integrate this feature into our App

A more likely scenario if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere:

iPhone user: let me use emergency SOS
iPhone: _ out of battery _

This would have been really helpful after the hurricanes that hit Florida earlier this year which knocked out cellular service for many days.

I think they knew that otherwise everyone would be dying to use it when they weren’t actually in an emergency

I hope that in the not too distant future this will be standard in all phones everywhere and will also include the rest of the world, calls and video calls via satellite. But I think the satellite infrastructure will have to improve to get there.

Hey CNET, can you find out for us consumers if this satellite feature increases the amount of radiation that the cell phone will emit or receive between itself and the satellite. Usually, satellite connection devices require a bit more energy to communicate with a satellite than a typical phone with a cell tower. Will this be more harmful to our health, or increase the of cancer to the user? Thank you. Im sure many of us would benefit from knowing this information.

    • Andi1089

      November 16, 2022 at 12:35 am

Even the radiation increased, its not activated all the time

So instead of looking for an excuse to get lost you just go to a controlled area 🤔

Wow ! I might just switch from Android for this satellite feature.

  23. Michael Griffiths

    November 16, 2022 at 12:58 am

This is soooo cool. If you’re in _exactly_ the right place, outdoors, not near any buildings, trees or suchlike, and you have one of those 5 specific emergencies, and the emergency that your _are_ experiencing doesn’t stop you reading small text, nor does it impair your ability to keep moving around to keep a satellite lock – you’re in luck!

Using the phone as a light reflecting device to attract attention is probably more feasible.

Apple should launch this feature globally so that anyone in distress can use this feature given if this is so useful and works without failure.

So what do you press for “Whats the Emergency” questionaire if someone holds you up with a gun while you’re in the car, stealing your jewelry, which causes you to panic and hit the gas, crashing into a tree, breaking your leg and trapping you in the middle of nowhere and then your car catches fire?

“Some of the best features of these phones are things you can’t see or probably things you’ll never have to use, which is a good thing” – No, it’s not! 😂

I think Starlink option should also be mentioned, when presenting satellite services to mobile phones. Starlink will be much better, in my opinion, because it will imitate ground mobile station and we will not need to have newest iPhone 🙂 However Apple was first to have this service available.
