In the long term, shutting down a coal mine means cleaner air and a healthier environment — but in the short term, it can devastate a community or family that relied on the mine’s paychecks to make ends meet. Environmental justice advocate Payton M. Wilkins thinks we can protect both workers and the planet with an age-old solution: unions. He digs into the economic fallout of ditching fossil fuels and shows why unions are well-positioned to push the transition to clean energy and green jobs.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

You’ve all been crying wolf about ‘we’re all gonna die in 10 years’ since roughly 1972 though lol, like why would anyone take Chicken Little seriously the 2000th time that he says “the sky is falling?”

@Johnny ShanksalotClassic and obvious straw-man fallacy

    • Johnny Shanksalot

      October 18, 2023 at 12:47 pm

@Greg BorsHow is it a strawman if it was mandatory curriculum in schools?
I do not think that that word means what you think that it means, sir!
The Manhattan claim is from Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ so do you either reject the claims of that film as untrue or…?
Science = scientific method so maybe try using it occasionally lol.

    • Greg Bors

      October 18, 2023 at 12:55 pm

@Johnny Shanksalot First of all, you referred to the OP as one of the “you all” when you obviously don’t even know the person.

Secondly, you’re now claiming it was “mandatory curriculum in schools” when I went to school in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, and it most definitely was not.

Thirdly, any errors made by popularizers such as Gore (who is obviously not a scientist) do not refute the overwhelming scientific consensus that AGW is indeed occurring.

But you know all this stuff – you’re likely just a troll for the oil industry

    • Johnny Shanksalot

      October 18, 2023 at 1:57 pm

@Greg Bors Yes, ‘you all’ as in the ‘public-private partnership’ that constitutes your modern eco-fascist movement, disagreeing or not liking something doesn’t make it a strawman.
Yup, I’m either an oil millionaire or a penniless anarchist who sees you for the global apex predators that you are, one of those things is certainly true…
I will have to go dig up Galileo though & let him know that ‘overwhelming consensus’ trumps his lame old scientific evidence in 2023 so the sun therefore revolves around the earth now & he should probably be censored for misinformation because all of the establishment sponsored ‘experts’ (shockingly) agree that the establishment’s always right!
The scientific method is about skepticism not blind faith regardless of evidence plus confirmation bias so ‘The Official Science’ ™ has always meant the opposite of science.
If you were younger then you’d know that Gore’s movie was curriculum in primary & high schools across the west for easily a decade but I myself am born in the 80s & yes, the schools pushed this nefarious Malthusian cult on us from day 1 along with all of the other pseudo religious collective guilt narratives designed to enslave our young minds to ‘The Collective’ & make us hate it’s enemies.

I’m old enough to remember most Ted Talks actually being about topics other than promoting pseudo scientific authoritarian collectivism. Also old enough to remember several decades of ‘we’re all gonna die in an ice age’ followed seamlessly by ‘Manhattan will be under 40 feet of water by 2020 even if we end all emissions today,’ etc. ‘Climate’ restrictions end millions in the 3rd world, pure evil.

Using the words ‘Climate Change’ takes all the focus away from those who pollute the earth. It’s pollution! Climate change sounds like evolution and its out of our hands. Maybe do a talk on why not to call it Climate Change!

This talk doesn’t go into any of the details (or consequences) of doing what the elites want us to do. We will have to mine lithium and cobalt which are far more dangerous and will kill impoverished people and further damage the earth. They are already cutting down untouched forests in South America to mine it. Look up the destruction of Lithium mines and how mining it is FAR less green than fossil fuels. Know the answer to global warming? Everyone who reads this comment and gets angry, take that energy and go plant a tree. If everyone in the world planted a tree today, the earth would be far better off. If Covid-19 didn’t open your eyes to what Bill Gates, Claus Schwab and our politicians truly want your future to be like, find out now.

    • Murray Rothbard

      October 18, 2023 at 12:55 pm

@many Sides Read between the lines in all environmental politicians/activists speeches and you will see a socialist heart, promoting Marx and Malthus mistaken theory covered by scientificism.

@Murray Rothbard Marx and Malthus are very different…

      October 19, 2023 at 2:57 am

I’m with Helen. Are you trying to report a Jordan Peterson theory or what? If you breathe air and drink water and eat food environmental health does affect you every second, every minute of your life. And people aren’t fruit. And generalizing like that is in poor taste and incorrect.

    • Murray Rothbard

      October 19, 2023 at 6:03 am

@Carlin’s Cosmic Soup Kitchen I never said there are no environmental problems. I’ve said politicians and activist use them to promote their anti-human/enslavement agenda. They are all about limiting, fining, restricting regular folks, and giving money to their crony capitalist allies (vide the New Green Deal) – never about creating actual solutions without enforcing their will upon others (vide the backlash to nuclear power).

    • Duolingo 055

      October 19, 2023 at 8:38 am

@Murray Rothbard Ok. What socialist policies do you mean?

    • Murray Rothbard

      October 19, 2023 at 10:10 am

@Duolingo 055 E.g. Green New Deal, restrictions on usage of cars, “sin taxes” based on your life style, etc. In summary, aggressions (or threats of) against peaceful individuals in order to compel them use their property differently from their will.

    • Duolingo 055

Unions have always been about people. I think it’s very wise of them to ensure that labor has a seat at the future’s table! I see these comments on here trying to be cute with their negativity but drinking PFAS/PFOS and breathing diesel particulates is no joke when your health or your children’s health is negatively impacted by it. It’s because of unions that we have protections for workers and higher standards for worker safety. All workers benefit from the work that these unions do! They aren’t just fighting for climate justice for themselves, they’re doing the hard work of fighting for your benefit too. So please keep your comments respectful or don’t comment at all. But whatever you do please listen to the plain spoken words of the labor movement because what you hear here today, will be the benefits you and your children will enjoy in the future.

wonderful points, very well said!! As an environmentalist who lives in the heart of the North Dakota oil field, I often feel despair for my friends and neighbors that rely on the fossil fuel industry for reliable income, but i also believe a just transition is possible if we take care of each other.

When are we ever going to address the fact that the US dollar (and other strong currencies) are directly tethered to the physical production of crude oil? Oil is usually leveraged to increase the value of currency since it’s a primary energy source. Until that fundamentally changes nothing else will fundamentally change and egregious pollution will continue. It’s now Economists that need to step up and articulate a climate solution otherwise our dystopian nightmares will absolutely become reality in the next 20 years… Being a climate activist without intrinsic knowledge of how money works only changes perspectives without ever changing our actual reality.
