Not a toxicologist, but I’m certain the main presence of Fluorine in bones is in the form of Apatite, which in fact strengthens the bone matrix and represents over half the total mass of skeletal mass. It is then reabsorbed by the bloodstream, so your skeleton sort of acts as a fluoride reservoir, capable of storing kilograms of the stuff.

Also, the LD50 of Fluorine (or Fluoride) is on the order of 60 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, and fluoridated toothpastes are about 1500 parts per million, or 0.15%, fluorides, so a typical 150g tube contains less than a fiftieth of the LD50 for a 50 kilogram (110 pound) person.

Kinda got a problem with how you presented the toothpaste bit. I wouldn’t want to gamble my life on a LD50 dose, but knowing that if you’re even a small adult, you’d need to consume (and somehow not throw up) fifty tubes of toothpaste all at once to have even odds of dying makes it all a lot less scary.

Anyone who is curious about mycelium and foraging for their own mushrooms: Do not eat anythung you’ve picked unless you can identify it with certainty. If you have the SLIGHTEST bit of nervousness, stop and do not eat it. Most mushrooms are safe to touch, but it’s always best to snap a photo , mark your location, and do tons of research..There are tons of resources online that can help you, one is the r/mycelium subreddit where you can upload images and details about the mushroom, and they will help you identify it.

I hate when she said “GO TO THE DOCTOR.” I haven’t seen a Dr since 2012 and finally have insurance through my job so I can see one now. So many people don’t have access to proper health-care. The answer is based on one’s access to a doctor when many people don’t have that readily.

The rest of the video was great. 13:34 tho? That’s the issue with the world. “If it’s at a grocery store”. Do research and buy books and try to find people who have knowledge. A lot of edible stuff is ranked as inedible in Australia because one person didn’t prepare it right and died. Just do your research and definitely learn how to fend for yourself. In the great depression that’s what they had to do to survive.

Eh. But most people don’t even realize you were bit until you left the spider. I have been bitten by black widows and brown recluses and didn’t realize it until a hour or two later. And most cases of brown recluse isn’t even bad. My black window bite had worse side effects. Just hope you aren’t one of the 5% of cases where you need plastic surgery or what ever they do to refill the skin.

People really do need to be careful with mushrooms, he teaches mycology and also does his own foraging (namely for Morels) and he constantly has people, namely college age students asking how to tell the difference between food, magic and ‘you die’ mushrooms. You can do a spore drop test, but even those aren’t flawless as depending on the age of the mushroom, the spores may lost their color, which could lead to very very bad results.

The food poisoning one was relatable to me. I got food poisoning this year and became so weak and dizzy. Fluids wouldn’t stay down so I was severely dehydrated. Remembering that time I got bit by one of the many spiders tahat infested my house while I was sleep, which I assumed was a brown recluse infestation because they were, well, brown, and I think I just got my confirmation. And it but me an the spot turned purple and was gross and goopy for about two months I think. I believe I only told my mom about it this year. I got the bite back in like…2016? 2017? Many years ago. I had a slight limp ’cause spider chose the most inconvinient location, and as a result, I’ve never slept without socks on ever again <3.

I was paranoid I was gonna croak (like I am on a normal bases already) but I stayed quiet hhgghg

Honestly, poisons is one of my favorite medical subjects, cause it hits on so many lesser known and interesting facts about how the body works! Like how old times poisons such as foxglove and hemlock were also used as (and often still are used as) medications for various conditions. Or how carbon monoxide poisoning actually tells us a lot about how the respiratory system actually works. It’s really fascinating on a medical and medical history level!

So much of this is great and helpful.
Except one part: toxicity is different for humans and animals. There are many substances that are toxic to animals and not to humans. Therefore, this test is unreliable, and is in fact barbaric.

Some more info on fluoride from Anne!

“The whole reason that they found out that fluoride can help prevent cavities is that beginning in the early 20th century, scientists linked high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in certain community water supplies to low levels of tooth decay. Since then, fluorination has been recognized as an easy way to drastically improve oral health. Actually, parts of India, China, and Africa have areas with high natural fluoride levels in their water, and are taking measures to remove the fluoride. Some countries have programs that fluorinate milk instead of water. There has been more recent evidence that suggested pregnant women should not drink fluorinated water, as it may result in lower IQ scores in their children. But, how much is too much – has not been fully determined.

Should you – or should you not drink fluorinate water is a different issue than eating a tube of toothpaste. It should be obvious that eating a tube of toothpaste will make you sick.

    Thanks again!”

    – Anne

2:58 Her answer for fluoride poisoning is really quite wrong… Having any bit of chemistry knowledge would know that calcium ion is nothing like fluoride ion… you can even say they are the opposite of each other…and they absolutely do not displace each other.
In fact calcium ion is considered as an antidote for fluoride poison because they BIND TOGETHER, not displace.
And one of the toxicity of fluoride is due to the fact that it makes bone TOO HARD that the bone become less elastic and hence higher chance of having factures.
Weakening of NEW FORMED bone only occurs when your dietary fluoride is too high that it interferes with the calcium absorption.

@Roy Wong yes. I am a pharmacist. old people with osteoporosis get fluoride, but its rare. the benefit of fluorid on osteoporosis couldnt be shown in studies, but since it increases bone density its still used.
more often i distribute fluoride tablets for children. those contain much more fluoride than whats in a bit of toothpaste.

Thank you thank you thank you for your accurate information on the brown recluse, as accurate is very rare when it comes to spiders. You said “in some cases” which is true because the vast majority of recluse bites do not have a necrotic reaction. Also mentioning that the treatment options for the necrosis are mixed, since people have varying reactions to the venom and the treatments, especially since there is no antivenom for brown recluse. A couple of things you forgot to mention. Even if you keep the spider, don’t trust your doctor to identify it. He’s a doctor, not an entomologist, find a real professional. Most doctors can’t tell the difference between Loxosceles and Agelenopsis. (I even saw a doctor I was was working for at the time identify a Phidippus audax as a Latrodectus hesperus, with the picture and description right in front of him.) The vast majority of doctors don’t bother to mention that any insect or spider bite can turn necrotic if the right infection is introduced to a compromised immune system, because it’s just easier to blame a spider. Here in California, some doctors will blame every bit of necrotic tissue on the dreaded brown recluse, yet others will completely write off the idea of Loxosceles envenomation because we do not have L. reclusa in this part of the country. Completely ignorant of the fact that we have plenty of L. deserta which is very similar in habits and venom, but they like the arid California desert and can be so light in color that you have to count the eyes with a magnifying glass to identify them. Even so, it is pretty difficult to get bitten by these shy spiders, most people would have little reaction if they were bitten, and most diagnosed “brown recluse bites” are a misdiagnosed STAPH infection. Well, that was my internet rant for the year. Thanks for the interesting and informative video.

You should also know that it’s pretty important to clean your nose out. All year too. Especially if you are sick or have allergies. Your nose contains boogers that are ready to leave your body because they have germs (bacteria, viruses, etc). Not only is it difficult to breathe when your nose is all clogged, it’s also dangerous, because again, *germs* are in those boogers. Anyone that sees this, please tell so to anyone that eats boogers. It’s just plain disgusting and as someone with terrible nasal allergies and post-nasal drip, the boogers DON’T TASTE GOOD. It also makes things more liable to get stuck in your throat because it is lined with too much mucus, which makes a narrower passageway. You can definitely ask your local doctor about this. Also try to avoid dairy. It lines your throat even more. I know, it’s delicious, but keep it to a minimum. Nut milk is close enough.

    Tip for picking mushrooms:
I’m not a professional but my mother always said if it has white spot, it is poisonous. So the typical red mushroom with white spots (not sure what it’s called) is actually poisonous! If I am incorrect about this please let me know!
I’ve never gone foraging for my own mushrooms but I’d love to learn more about it 🙂
Also this video was very interesting, I sure learned a lot!

Well, a lot of species with “white spots” are edible. And there are a lot of toxic species, including deadly poisonous ones, that don’t have “white spots”. So that “white spots” thing should definitely not be used as your guidance in the woods.

P.S.: the “white spots” are called veil remnants.

Poinsettia is poisonous for dogs and cats! The smaller the animal, the more likely it is to become a problem. At the very least it will irritate their mouth and esophagus, potentially making breathing difficult or inducing vomit.
