My favorite drummer and my favorite character among musicians. One gets the impression that Stewart has rarely been gnawed by self-doubt.

If Wired hosted Copeland, are we going to have the opportunity to ask Andy Summers any music related questions?

As a side note; you get definity feel the pocket in Be My Girl (the 1979 live in Boston Version); the lead in with Summer’s Guitar playing and Copeland jumping in with the drums is stellar

  23. Patrick Williamson

    November 20, 2023 at 7:50 pm

I’d say that the only reason that buddy rich song is difficult is because it’s impossible to replicate his style. Personally I don’t think he’s nearly as good as many session drummers today or was even the best drummers and would arguably say there are more difficult songs to play. Terry Bozzio – The Black Page IMO is way more difficult and solely a drum piece too instead of some flashy BS that Buddy did. Sorry Stewart, you’re a great drummer but you have a bad take on this one and need to stop living in the past

Stewart is not just a legend, he’s also crazily entertaining to listen to & watch! He’s a loveable character, almost a stand up comic, without even trying to be.
Like The Beatles without Ringo, The Police would be nearly nothing without Stewart.

Loved this video! Want *MORE* 😇

Stewart Copeland’s side hustle: Berating his hoyty-toyty, bass playing singer with tongue planted firmly in-cheek and a smile sincere enough to reassure everyone he’d lay down in traffic to protect him. I love this band so much.

  31. Rogifan

    November 21, 2023 at 6:27 pm

Did he really say Taylor Hawkins, Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr had no chops?

Stewart’s awesome… the police are awesome… a shame they couldn’t stay together longer… the power of the policy’s power trio punk, reggae, jazz is awesome!

  36. Absolute Bangers

    November 21, 2023 at 6:52 pm

I could listen to Stewart talk about drums all day, he is one of my all time favourite drummers. I’m also glad he spoke about the beast behind the kit that was Joey Jordison, one of the first people to get me interested in metal music!

Stewart and Adam Savage should do a Mythbusters Drumming edition. Even Stewarts speech mannerisms are SO close to Savages, it would be quite entertaining.

  51. Carlos Nunez

    November 22, 2023 at 11:43 pm

On top of being one of the best drummers I’ve ever heard, he is just soooooo charismatic !

  52. Robert Cole

    November 22, 2023 at 11:48 pm

don’t stop believing is a perfect example. the chorus is 8bpm faster than the verses. and it needs to be or it would feel wrong. clicks have their place, and they also have places where they don’t belong.

  53. Kenneth Chapman

    November 23, 2023 at 1:14 am

The drummer of my favorite rock band of all time. Couldn’t click fast enough! Personally the #10 rank on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 best drummers is low in my opinion.

  61. Common Man

    November 23, 2023 at 9:12 am

As I said before, Stewart can hit the snare harder with traditional grip than most drummers can hit with a match grip. It is mind blowing the power created by him that way. Just an observation.

  62. richard bell

    November 23, 2023 at 9:47 am

As soon as someone criticises a musician for not being ostentatious enough, I know they’re a gobsh¡†e.

  64. Ishmam Ahmed

    November 23, 2023 at 11:42 am

What a guy for showing respect to newer generations instead of pointing some random sh*t as an excuse. Average newer generation of musicians have both feel and technique leagues above average musicians 20-30 years ago. Of course I will never dispute having some insanely good older musicians like Steve himself who you just can’t compare newer musicians with

Stewart Copeland is one of the coolest, smartest and most fun to listen to musicians on the planet! He is just fantastic! The way he makes, lives and explains music is just the best! His style and his sense of humour are world class! Stewart is a super star – but still friendly and not arrogant! A rare species!

Steve Pruitt (UNT master jazz) saith unto me. ‘Ive seen many drummers hold sticks in all sortsa ways, so long as the strokes and music is good, no one should care”… Ringo was a badass because.. he is oringally a left side player, but due to optics, the producers (TV mainly), said he had to play ‘normal’. (She loves you) intro, is a left fill -on a right kit. Try it! Stewart Copeland is a giant because he infused something no one else did back then. Reggae and punk!

I saw a vid.with Buddy Rich. He said the traditional grip is the correct way to hold the stiicks. The match grip is for timponies,But it depends on the individual.
Charlie Watts always used the traditional grip, but then again he was into jazz.

i am so glad he articulated how my brain works with music. Ive never had a lesson a day in my life, i couldnt tell you what any “notes” are, but ive been playing drums and guitar for 20-25 years. Since i was a small child i had drum sticks in my hand. I always struggle to explain to people how my brain goes about learning and “feeling” what i should be doing. You really DO just kinda feel it. Now in my 30s I know enough to tell you what a bar is, an 8th and 16th note, but i could never look at a sheet and go OH ok so i have to do this this and that, i listen and just do what feels right for the song, or if im learning a song i listen to it a million times over and just do my best to emulate whats being done and in doing that more often than not i hear something i hadnt noticed and wind up learning new things simply just by actively listening. To hear one of the best ever sort of articulate that is awesome

How does one submit a question? Be interested if you endorse Tama, and why (if youre allowed to say). Maybe some reviews of other manufacturers, or to know what you played in the studio on Police recordings. Even just a focus on what snare you used on Spirits, and how you tuned it, snare tension, etc.

@6:22 “You learn how to play a song and it lasts forever.” Not always. Nick Mason of Pink Floyd said after years of not playing drums he had to practically relearn how to play them on their songs when they began touring again. In his book he said he was ashamed at how he had lost his ability to do his main occupation in life.

  206. @jimo3173

    November 28, 2023 at 11:40 pm

The only thing I disagree with that he said was that drummers today pick up where older drummers left off. If anything, most drummers today couldn’t carry the shoes of most of the drummers in Buddy Rich’s day. Drumming has been going backwards for years, not getting better. That doesn’t mean there’s no drummers today who are any good, but trying to compare Joey Jordison who was good to say Buddy Rich who was incredible would be like comparing a Geo Metro to a Lamborghini Diablo.

Love his playing and attitude–very in sync with my own (there are artistic differences but “eff it–do whatever” generally works a lot better than “trying” to play–per Yoda, “do or do not–there is no try”). Also, I happen to love odd times–especially 7.
