There is no such thing as being “not racist,” says author and historian Ibram X. Kendi. In this vital conversation, he defines the transformative concept of antiracism to help us more clearly recognize, take responsibility for and reject prejudices in our public policies, workplaces and personal beliefs. Learn how you can actively use this awareness to uproot injustice and inequality in the world — and replace it with love. (This virtual interview, hosted by TED’s current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers and speaker development curator Cloe Shasha, was recorded June 9, 2020.)

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). I want to fix the n-word’s definition. I think this is pertinent to the discussion. That definition impacts us all psychologically.

‘All our anxieties relate to time. … The major problems of psychiatry revolve around an analysis of the despair, pessimism, melancholy, and complexes that are the inheritances of what has been or with the fears, anxieties, worries, that are the imaginings of what will be.’ Fulton J Sheen.

I think it’s high time we stop using the word “race” to describe ethnicities (skin colors or culture groups) there is only one race: the HUMAN race, which is comprised of many ethnicities like the flowers of one garden. As Bahá’u’lláh (1817-1892CE) taught starting from 177 years ago.

Most of us are recovering racists…in varying degrees.
But once a mind is stretched it cannot go back. I for one…want to see a just world and am willing to work on myself and with others to achieve that goal.

So in Mr Kendi’s world you have to be 1 of 3 things. 1. Racist. 2. Not racist, which means you’re also racist, but you haven’t confessed to it. Or, 3. anti-racist, which means… You’re racist, but you have confessed to the priest..er.. person of color that you’re racist. Come on people switch your brains on for just a second here. Are you racist? No? Well don’t let these scumbags tell you that you are! They are making a ton of money and splitting the country in half while they do it. And they are incredibly racist themselves. How you gonna let a racist brow beat you for being what they actually are when you aren’t.. LOL!

This guy is dangerous, he’s circulating the idea that you’re ether an antiracist, or a racist. If you’re not part of the “good” side (which is the side where you’re agreeing with me) , you’re in the “evil” side. This simplist idea has no gray area. The most dangerous people in the world are those who are certain of their own righteousness, and of the guilt of the “others”, because everything feels justified to them, for they are on the “good” side.

Unfortunately these speakers did a bad job of presenting this issue. The issue was not introduced in an engaging way. The problem was not clearly defined. The process of how he came to his solution was never spoken about at all. Alternative solutions were not discussed and therefore doing a comparison of why this was the best solution didn’t happen. To learn how to give a presentation like this, I suggest from MIT: “How to speak by Patrick Winston”

I don’t agree with all of his views. I don’t see color. I see another human. A living individual just like me. Folks that go through the same things as me and other people. If feel like he says in one part that because I am white that I don’t know what struggles and bad times are. That’s just not true. All humans struggle.

you have to see color. ignoring it is YOUR privilege. we have to see color, accept our differences, and respect them. and he never said only blacks and POC struggle. our struggle is different. white privilege is not just about money.

It’s true, there is a big difference. An antiracist is someone obsessed with race and who never takes it off their minds, especially when there are political benefits. Someone who is not a racist regrets every death and the first question in a murder is not what race the murderer and victim were, but what actions we can take and what laws could be changed if necessary so that things like this do not happen again.

Most black Americans need racism to get pity and this will continue for decades. They need someone to point at when they deal with life struggles and that group is the white people. Without it, they will feel lost or forgotten.

Me Now You sound very sensitive. Maybe take a look at your internal biases. Saying that people attempting to be anti-racist and dismantle as system of oppression are more dangerous than the neo-nazis and white supremacists roaming the streets is ridiculous.

This man is an authoritarian ideologue. He and his comrades are seeking POWER, not justice. They have weaponized the term “racism” as their call-to-arms and as their politically unassailable mantra. If you don’t ACTIVELY agree with him/them, you are automatically a “racist”. They are the communist “Red Guard” of our day. Beware.

  38. David Jankowski

    June 18, 2020 at 7:20 pm

I get incredibly frustrated by the use of the term, “LatinX.” We are in a conversation discussing colonial thinking and whiteness, then we anglophonize Spanish by taking away an inherent trait of the language. The non-gendered take on language is an anglophone construct that does not fit into the romance languages so cleanly. This term has also been generally shown to be rejected by the people it claims to describe.

    • Gioni Riley

      June 18, 2020 at 11:02 pm

I understand your anger. However, there is disagreement on the term within the community. Younger folks are the ones who are adopting it, older folks not so much.

Want to go get back at the ancestors of the people who sold the Africans into slavery? Go to Africa, those were Africans who were at the front of the slavery market, capturing and selling slaves in Africa. I am egalitarian, if that’s not enough, than I am not your ally. I am equally opposed to immigrants of all races.

I think that perhaps the true test of anti-racism is whether or not a person willingly accepts a person to marry and change the genetic and socio-econo-political lineage. For example, a parent who will disown their child for marrying outside their “group” or for having a child of someone outside of their “group” is a racist. American society accepts racism, just as it accepts discriminatory attitudes towards the disabled, just as it accepts bullying behavior against those they disfavor or dislike or disrespect, just as it allows young people to disrespect their elders. Racism, bullying, discrimination, harassment, and brutality are symptoms rooted in a deep-seeded pearl of unhappiness. Ironcialy, America was built by unhappy colonists who fled unhappiness to create a country for the pursuit of happiness for all. The question has always been the definition of “all.”

I’m not an expert on all this guy’s ideas, but I do think he makes a wonderful breakthrough when he says that racism/anti-racism is a characteristic of an action, vs. a characteristic of the person themselves. Therefore, a person can do a racist thing one moment, and then do an anti-racist thing the next.
I think that is a very liberating concept b/c it recognizes that we as people are complex and have deeply layered ideas/motivations/feelings. We are capable of being good and bad. As a white person, I’ve often struggled under the weight of the idea that even if .005% of my mind is hateful towards another race, and even if that part of my mind frustrates me, I’m still a racist. And racist = evil.
Kendi’s model is much more forgiving and practical, and gives white people a clear path forward to do more anti-racist things than racist things, until gradually the racist things are eliminated.

As far as I can tell there is racist or not racist. The same wins any other isn’t, it’s binary, true or false. Anyone who isn’t racist is by definition anti-racist otherwise they would be racist.

I put forward the idea that no one person can know the motivations of another unless explicitly told what that motivation is, therefore any assumption as to another person’s motives are exactly that, assumptions and are generally more telling about the person making the assumption.

Oh I see. This makes sense. So I’m either anti-racist or I’m a racist. I can’t be in the middle.

I’m someone who believes that even if I don’t agree with you, I’ll fight for your right to say it. And I can live with you and I won’t restrict your actions as long as you don’t restrict the actions of those around you.

So if I were to choose between being an anti-racist and a racist, I’d be against both.

The funny thing is that by being against both, you would call me a racist and a racist would call me an anti-racist.

He sees any disparity between white and black and immediately chalks that up to “systemic racism” eg one of his first stats about incarceration rates vs population, he ignores the higher criminality rate. He’s got a doctorate, he should know this, so he’s being completely disengenious with his arguments.

    • Gregor Seidel

      June 21, 2020 at 9:30 pm

@bclbrendan His point there, if I understood correctly, is merely that if you adopt an anti-racist view, you do not see the mismatch in relative incarceration rates as reflective of a higher propensity towards crime of black and brown people. Rather, you look for systemic factors. Clearly, an order of magnitude wealth disparity, combined with financial barriers to higher education and the totality of the job market, and access to social and medical services, as well as very real racial biases in the policing and judicial systems are all relevant, to name a few. In this way, the anti-racist viewpoint sees systemic weaknesses that the “not racist” view misses. Incidentally, by exposing such weaknesses, this can act as a corrective, which can be beneficial not only for racial minorities, but also the vast majority of citizens.

I think uneducated people who live in small towns/ cities or in closed cultures (like having only few friends outside family or living in strictly regulated families) will have a closed mindset. When you do not have an open mindset and you want to “belong” to somewhere its very easy to pick up every acceptable rule that that certain group you want to belong to has. If that group is racist, even if you had an innocent mindset at the beginning its very easy to fall into the herd effect. There will be no change until people live like this. This is the reason why people in big cities where the population is higher and more dense per square meter, you see a more open mindset. Its hard not to bump into people with differing thinking, its hard to avoid people there, so you will for sure meet on a daily basis with others who think and say different things from your beleifes and eventually talking with these people on a daily basis can change your vision. In smaller populated places its very easy to pick up a “cult culture”… We can thank social media for the exposure it creates. It opens up the small cultures to the world. People who hear the same thing every day are faced with other opinions. But we need to be also careful with this as the internet is dangerous. Its very easy to manipulate people for propaganda. And I do believe all races should be treated the same, but I have seen some very scary videos from black people saying that “whities” should be facing enslavement like their ancestors did to pay off a debt… and that scares me. Going from one race to be racist to another, is not the solution. Its like with sexism. Woman having more rights is not equality and not less sexist. Its the exact same thing just against man… We need to find a balance between one human to another… not go from one end to another. I can only hope that with time, and more exposure, all of these problems will be addressed and talked about. And I would encourage people to argue. An argument is not a bad thing its a way to face opposing opinions and talk about them. It does not needs to be violent. Just talk and try to see the points of the other side. If you find that the other person is not reasonable, or does not even wants to consider your opinion, just politly ask to end the conversation. Eventually, if you keep planting the opinions in a kind way, they will take a root. Every time you meet people like that, just talk about the topic kindly and when you see that they had enough, close and move on. Then come back the next time and try to say again, “hey look, i still think what you are doing and saying is not kind, because of this this and this” and most importantly, always tell the reasons why. A strong reason will build a stronger base.

Remember old movies from the 60s and some white is sympathetic or helpful to a poor black, and then some flaming racist from the back hills says “Look at you…N-lover.” He is a milder, more polished version of that. 86. Apollo media

    June 22, 2020 at 7:46 am

Let me start by saying this facts and the truth can not be racist.
Sure they can be spun in a way that is racist if that is the intent of the person stating the facts and the truth.
One bit of truth is that everyone on this planet is not only the same race but we are all literally related to each other.
It is impossible for any of us to realistically hate a person that is a different race than we are because we are all part of the human race.
    The only race there is.
    Black and white are colors.
African and European are ethnicities and cultures.
It has been scientifically proven that no matter who you are and what country you were born in if we go back through your family tree eventually we will find that you and I have common ancestors and more than one.
As a example 1 in 200 people are direct descendants of Genghis Kahn.
One main thing the guy speaking in this video does that many people today have a habit of doing and really damages their credibility is when talking about black people or other minorities they say don’t judge the whole group based off of a few individuals then right after that lump every single white person into one group based off of some individuals.
They say how bad it is to stereotype people or racially profile people then right afterwards racially profile all white people based on stereotypes.
Now about white privilege that is true and false at the same time.
Currently white privilege is a weapon that is actually being used by white supremacists as a way to make black people feel like they will never be able to achieve the things white people can and is designed to make white people feel superior to everyone else. If you can’t see that then there is no point in further discussion because then it would be like trying to teach a bird algebra.
It isn’t racism that is the total reason for the economical inequality although that is and was a large part of it in the past
Black people are constantly told that they are oppressed.
And they absolutely have been but not since the 1990’s and definitely not the way they were before the late 1960’s
One thing nobody not even black people acknowledge is the fact that black Americans have accomplished insane levels of success and prosperity in a very very short time.
Up until the civil rights act it was impossible for black people to advance themselves in anyway. But the truth is black men and women in just a little more than 50 years went from not being allowed to have wealth property or advanced degrees or hold political offices.
To having a black man as the president of the United States and many black men and women in congress, the supreme Court, every level of state government, medical doctors, lawyers, physicists, engineers, many millionaires and multimillionaires and respected leaders and experts in every field there is.
I don’t know of any other group of people that have achieved that level of success in that short of time.
But yet nobody focuses on that they only focus on the negative things while completely ignoring all the amazing achievements black people have accomplished.
    Why is that?
Black people don’t need the white savior to hold their hand and walk them through life.
Like many democrats would like people to believe.
It’s those democrats that say unless black people are given help by white people they are doomed to fail that is the racist and they even got the majority of black people to believe that and to believe that those democrats are their ally.
And got black people hating republicans because republicans say black people don’t need special help because they are just as capable as white people are. In otherwards because republicans see black people as equals black people call them racists .
Because the real racists got you all twisted.

I’m all for learning about racism, striving to be antiracist, and learning about how intersectionality leads to different types of discrimination. What I am against is blaming all disparities on racism, systemic racism, or even just discrimination as it generally isn’t true to claim all disparities are due to systemic racism or discrimination. A certain % of disparities are due to discrimination, which changes over time. A major factor that leads to or reinforces disparities is CULTURE and how a learned culture impacts the priorities and goals of people who grow up within those cultures. This factor is largely ignored by many anti-racist thinkers as it seems they assume all people have the same sets of ideas and values that they grow up with.

I paraphrase “if youre a person of color and you are racist towards a person of color. Youre a racist.” Therefore negated the ideas he’s preaching. As that, in and of itself, is a racist statement. By simply not applying that idea across all races. Therefore his philosophical views are skewed.

On a second point: He is asking that all people to be altruistic. Its an if this/then that argument. “Worry about your self interest” and then repeats “Worry about everyone else.” This isn’t a valid argument. Its hypocritical.

Just like saying ‘im not racist’ doesn’t mean you are not a racist, accusing someone of being a racist also does not make them a racist. This type of behavior is hurting Americans, and creating a society that further engages in racism due to the unfounded accusations being thrown around by thoughtless people. On the same note, saying America is systemically racist does not make it so. Saying police are racist does not make them so. Only rampant ignorance would allow someone to make that sort of generalization, the same ignorance that causes people to dislike someone because of their skin color. Use your intelligence to just people and events on a case-by-case basis, not by why the media says about an event.

If a person in America admits they are racist, doesn’t that have legal liabilities with it? So why would a person want to put themselves in legal jeopardy?

May I wonder. Is there never any black person or white person or whatever person (since we are all the same so color shouldn’t matter) that says something bad to a white person? Do all white persons (or rather ”all persons”) reach the top? get a great job? get best education ? I am very much against racism but I am also very much against people that feel they are per definition a victim. People that feel sorry for them selves for who they are. I can’t see how it is in the US. But in Europe every person no matter what color or gender has the same chances and opportunities. What people do with this is their problem. Most people never reach the top. Many people don’t get a good job no matter what color they are. Stop feeling sorry for your self. If you want to be something you need to work for it. You want to become President of the US? If you work hard enough for it you can no matter what color you have. You want to become Formula 1 Champion 7 times? You can if you work hard enough and have the talent no matter what color you are. You want to be a big star? Any one with talent can be a big star. Color has no role in it. There was a story here in Norway the other day. A famous chess player who happened to have a dark skinn was out in the media and he was SO ANGRY!! because when he came to the security at the airport the security guards always start talking English to him while they talked Norwegian to ALL the white people. They actually made the airport apologize.. Now this is the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. These people stand there processing thousands of people a day. They just have to guess or even just randomly start speaking either English or Norwegian and as soon as someone answers they know what language they need to speak. I happen to be white and they start talking to me just as often in English as Norwegian. Now that guy in my eyes should get a life and stop acting like he is some kind of victim.. I really can’t stand it that the airport actually officially apologized. In this case I think the airport was abused.

Sure you are right man, i was waching it 10 minutes and all the time i hear same words you are just turning them around. And to be hones its little bite boring to me.

Its not happening only to black people, its more about dominance and power, your collor is just an excuse. In places where are a few black people they change it for something else.
