Tesla will only ship Quad Motor Cybertrucks in the first year, which is 100K USD easy. It will come with Autopilot Hardware 4 computers and 5 megapixel Sony cameras… no parking sensors.
It should be on schedule, they already have the Gigapress in the Texas factory, so the production line should be mostly functional by the end of the year 2022. Battery supply is not good, so we should expect production ramp only when they’ll receive 4680 cells from Panasonic too, which Panasonic said will be 2023Q2.

I hope Hyundai/Kia and others get this bill amended to include their models. How did supporting GM, Ford, and Tesla, which make a large number of cars outside of the US, benefit American buyers? How did they forget about all the foreign ice auto plants, that employ thousands of Americans today, like it was nothing? It was ok to start the craziness of this bill in 2026 but reducing the number of evs eligible today is stupid. It would have been better to keep the income limits, keep the vehicle price limits, but remove the vehicle cap and set some kind of price increase limits until 2026. Also having the used car credit be 5k on 35k every 3 years, would help more people get into an ev. This way if they do not qualify for the full credit, they can buy used. Just my thoughts.

Biggest thing to note is that if you make more than $150k individual or $300k family, you won’t qualify (presumably adjusted gross income). And if you’re buying an $80k truck, you’re likely to be over that income limit.

    • Nathan Deunk

      October 15, 2022 at 9:52 pm

      I agree; I don’t know HOW someone with $150k income can justify an $80k car. My personal daily driver is a $6,000 2012 Prius w/ 170k, and once or twice a month I drive my $4,000 2002 V6 Ford Explorer w/ 139k.

For the cost, the EV’s should be V2G or V2H. Getting something back for the investment, utility credit, or using to run your home, low electric bills, would help with such expensive transportation.

    • Ezequiel Vega

:7:00 The Cadillac Lyriq and GMC HummerEV will be powered by Ultium(TM), but what does that mean? What’s the difference between Ultium(TM) pouch cells and the pouch cells used in the self-thermalizing battery packs of the Bolt EVs?

  51. Crazy prayingmantis

    October 17, 2022 at 8:44 am

Contaminating and pumping 500,000 gallons of water per ton of Lithium is an environmental disaster on a global scale.
Thats what it takes to make the Lithium batteries is these EVs.

What about recycling the batteries i hear you say.

The process of recycling the batteries is inefficient and would produce more carbon emissions than making a new battery.
That should halt the EV market in its tracks.

  53. Dave Dee

With Tesla, FSD is an option that can be purchased later as a software download so it wouldn’t affect the selling price in terms of the tax credit.

Good luck getting an F150 Lightening under $80K with all these markups dealors are doing to it. A 40K Cybertruck won’t see the light of day like a 30K Equinox. Speaking of the Equinox that was left off the list and will contain the new ultium battery. It’s going to interesting to see what that’s priced at.

c/net used to be my go-to for all things computing back in the 1990’s. I’m glad I’ve found them again for all things EV. But now with many affordable EV choices coming to market, I fear our poor power grid won’t be able to stand the load. In California, we’re already getting Flex Alerts on hot summer days. What’s going to happen if we all plug our EV’s in at the same time? Also due to the drought, we may be losing our ability to produce hydro power. I’ve heard that just a loss of 10 more feet in the level of Lake Mead will force the Hoover Dam off line.

  62. Carl Wilson

Most of these cars are not readily available. Some others are crap with poor battery choice.
