No two people taste wine the same way, and science is starting to show us why. Sensory scientist Qian Janice Wang explores why experts and beginners experience complexity so differently — revealing that what makes a wine great may have less to do with what’s in the glass and more to do with what’s happening in your brain. (Recorded at TEDxNoVA on October 10, 2025)

BTW
I’m Brazilian and did not watch it in dub or subtitled

The idea that what makes a wine great might have more to do with the brain than the glass is such a quietly disruptive framing, because it shifts wine from a purely sensory experience to a cognitive and contextual one. Janice exploring the gap between expert and beginner perception is especially interesting, because that gap mirrors how expertise actually shapes perception across almost every field. Curious, what is the one finding from the research that you think will most change how everyday wine drinkers actually approach their next glass?

I like many blended reds. For me the pallet should be sweet with berry and it’s earthy note, dry bringing a tart flavor from the alcohol that meets the aging or the woody taste, and less clear but I like legs on my glass. I’m not really a fan of flavored or spiced wines, but if you have a nice wine I’ll tolerate more play in the aroma. 😏👉🍷🤌

I wonder if the wine world sometimes overvalues complexity and undervalues pleasure. A wine can be intellectually fascinating but still leave people unmoved. For me, the best wines are the ones that make you want another glass and a longer conversation.
