5:39 isn’t one of the many values/points of an engineer is to size things appropriately? Wouldn’t need engineers if everything was stupid overbuilt (looking at you, Empire state building), but would also be way too expensive to build most things. I like how he breaks down rebar but kinda misses the point.

Isn’t the numbering of rebar based on the diameter in 1/8th inch increments? So a #4 bar is 1/2 inch and a #9 bar is 1 1/8 inch diameter.

Traffic signalization can also address issues of speeding (so you’ll hit more red lights if you drive higher than the speed limit) or are prioritizing other modes of transport, such as pedestrians, bike lane users, and buses (and so vehicle drivers will experience more red lights).

Great engineering knowledge and great explanation skill but a lot of these answers should’ve been directed at urban planners. The line for example, is significantly less efficient than a regular “hub and spoke” or circular design when considering transit. Building up is great, but building too far out always creates problems. He mentioned good reasons to not have elevated subways in NYC, but a reason he missed is the impact of all that above ground infrastructure on the already very narrow streets.

Why would you ask a structural engineer about urban design? Completely different disciplines.

  82. John Scaramis

    March 10, 2023 at 4:24 am

6:04 Concrete’s compressive strength is higher than is quasi-nonexisting tensile strength. However the compressive strength of concrete is still much smaller than that of steel (however there are some high-tech concrete variants that can reach the strength of mild steel).
Then why use concrete? Because the ratio of costs to strength is much lower for concrete compared to steel. And it’ easier to pour concrete and make planar substructures 😉

This guy has not watched “not just bikes”
Actually he might have, but the editor did not.
He is correct naming Amsterdam, but like 9 1-word cuts later he’s talking about canals.
The reason Amsterdam is such a good design, is because it prioritizes pedestrian and bike traffic, not motorized vehicles. That might be due to canals in a round-about way, but its not because “canals.”

A lot of math also goes into designing a bridge for wind and variable load conditions. Two examples where the engineers fell down were the wibbly wobbly London Millennium Footbridge and the 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and we still have bridges where soldiers are advised to “break step” when crossing them to avoid resonances.

What is the civil engineer plan for the very near future for our cities, say 2030s-2090s?
Do you support the abolishment of cars? If so, what is the plan for giving the people back their land, all the land ceded to car and oil companies?

There is only about 3 billion EVs’ worth of mineable lithium reserves, so unless the plan is to simply return to fossil fuels by the end of just this century, surely there is some plan to revert our city design back to before we let capitalists turn all our roads into death traps and 50% of open space into parking lots.

Or is that just a problem we leave for our grandchildren?

At schoold I had a class called dimensioning of structures, where we were taught how to dimension structures, considering the different forces applied on it (wind, its own weight, cars,…). It was a NIGHTMARE of calculations. Maths everywhere. Yikes.
