Steam Deck Review: PC Gaming in Your Palm, at Long Last

After spending some time getting used to its quirks, I was impressed with how well some keyboard-and-mouse games translated to the Steam Deck’s built-in touchpads. Steam Deck: Subscribe to CNET: Like us on Facebook: Follow us on Twitter: Follow us on Instagram: Follow us on TikTok:

@Ilya Galinsky At least there’s people who bought the 256GB version that would be more than happy to trade with you and pay you the difference. (Not me though, I agree with you 😄)

On the other side, from other reviews, fingerprints are not very visible on the etched screen and very visible on the standard screen.

I cancelled my first preorder because I also thought but then I realized this is not the Lenovo type cheap matt screen but rather a semi glossy surface what you find on Acer monitors which is actually the best compromise so I reordered the 512Gb version.

3:37 THE POINT ABOUT WHY ANYONE WOULD BUY A 64 GB MODEL (I GOT 256) IS HE DIDN’T ONCE MENTION THE MICRO SD CARD SLOT OR THE COMPARISON TO HD SHM THATS DISHONEST EVEN THE NINTENDO SWITCH BOASTED DOUBLE THE STORAGE AND THATS ONLY 64GB BE HONEST WITH YOUR REVIEWS PLS JUST BUY A BIGGER SD CARD IF YOU WANT TO CARD AROUND TONS OF PC GAMES OR BUY THEM BY THE SIZES MAINLY 64 GB SHOULD DO AND HAVE A TON OF THEM NONE OF THEM HAVE “ENOUGH” STORAGE THEY ALL WILL USE SD CARDS LETS BE SERIOUS HERE

    Proton is not an emulator!

    • Henrique CaRioCa

      February 25, 2022 at 10:12 pm

no , it is a software abstraction layer !!!!
it is simpler than an emulator since the hardware architecture is the same !! only changes software functions !
      Emulators translate hardware functions!

Isnt the whole point of a handheld is that it is convenient to take out with you. This si half the size of a cricket bat. I would rather spend my money on a ps5 if you could get one.

Portables need to be getting away from a physical screen an going towards the augmented reality route.

You can just Bluetooth connect your PS or Xbox controller to your pc, phone, tablet, or tv. You can run GamePass from a phone, pc, tablet, android tv, or chrome cast. The battery on this lasts 2 hours.

Playable doesn’t mean you might need tweaks to get it working, it means, you might have to use touchscreen input text, an external launcher, text might be too small for a screen this size and so on. it means the game plays 100% but the experience is not.

Holy Crap! Dan! I haven’t seen you since Play Value back on OnNetworks covering the history of all the OG game consoles/companies. I knew I heard that voice somewhere before and it threw me for a memory hole loop.

Same hair style, different color, but overall we’ve just gotten older lol.

Great to finally see you again and great review on the Deck. Waiting for my After Q2 Pre Order so getting my hype fill anywhere I can get it.

    • Rakusan2

      February 27, 2022 at 12:07 am

There is already a tutorial online on how to do that. Also, LTT and The Phawx have said that they make their own as well.

If you do not want to wait or look online, here is how to do it
      1. Switch to Desktop mode
      2. Open Steam
      3. Add Non-Steam Game
      4. Browse for the install .exe
      5. Run through Steam and let it install
      6. Go To Properties for the game and change the target to the installed .exe run file
      7. Logout of Desktop mode
      8. Play the game and enjoy

You might need to enable Steam Play for all titles if Steam does not automatically run it through Proton. The setting in in the desktops Steam’s Settings

I have a question. Since I have only owned Windows based PC’s, I know that the settings of the specific OS can also influence performance. For instance, if your base settings are at 4K in Windows, you can run games in 720p, but that still takes a massive hit. It is then better to also set Windows in 720p and then set the game as well in 720p. Does the Steam Deck perform better when putting the Linux base resolution in 720p, instead of 800p. And what kind of fps do you gain by that? Are you willing to test that?

Game Gear, been there done that

  42. Felix Bouffard

PC gaming has always been defined by what desktop computers can do. Producers and programmers were never restricted to creating content for a 7″ screen, gamepad only or limited to portable battery power constraints in such a device like the Steam Deck. If Valve’s Steam Deck turns into a major hit among consumers and sells by the millions – then obviously game producers will evolve and adapt. Fingers crossed that it does and all my favorite games I own become Deck Verified.

I really hope more Windows Store games work, Halo Infinite especially.

Other than that, I’m extremely happy with what I’ve been hearing about the Deck. I cannot wait to get my invite e-mail to finish my purchase (I’m Q1 so I should be getting my email in March for sure!). I can’t wait to get my hands in the objectively best handheld for the price and the objectively best way for newbies to get into PC gaming.
