Spain is a fascist state. Take that into consideration tech companies. Also, most of their polititians are thiefs that walk freely in the streets. Not to mention the previous king Juan Carlos who evades taxes and sold weapons to Saudi Arabia for his own wealth.

*Funny guy. There is a reason why year after year, decade after decade, “global” and “publicly traded” tech companies ONLY come from the US. Europe is nowhere in the map when it comes to global tech. The salaries in Spain are even lower than some of the Asian countries. There is no tech talent in Spain. You can say all the buzz words, like AI, Cyber Security, etc., but nothing is going to come from Spain. You will only get tourists to visit Madrid and Barcelona, that’s about it.*

@Stephanie Hale I quote you “You will only get tourists to visit Madrid and Barcelona, that’s about it.” Thought we were talking about tech companies here, not about “how Spain is only tourism”.
Look up for the biggest construction company in the world, for the biggest retail company in the world…
If you have problems against Spain then move to another continent as u might not have been born there and then see what happends to your neoliberal kkk life.

And do it fast, as your life expectancy in your megagreat amazing epic super tech country is 6 years lower than in “you will only get tourists” mine 😉

@Stephanie Hale “We are not talking about healthcare here. We are not talking about homelessness here. We are talking about tech companies”

Here a Spanish engineer. Well, in addition to the tourist industry (Spain in 2019 was the second most visited country in the world after France) we know how to do a “couple” of things, perhaps we are not a country as well known as yours (Spain has 1/7 of the population of USA) but we are far from being the shit hole you describe in your arrogant comments.

Technology is not only related to electronics or computing, Spain leads in global industry sectors such as wind or solar energy, high-speed trains that we export to many countries in the world (like yours) or the construction of large infrastructures such as the expansion of the Panama Canal (something more complicated than developing any silly software program), the high-speed lines of Saudi Arabia or the expansion of the Heathrow airport, Spain is the seventh largest arms exporter in the world , we manufacture submarines, frigates, aircraft carriers, combat aircraft or helicopters or aerospace technology, (Have you heard of AIRBUS? Have you heard of NAVANTIA? Have you heard of INDRA?) And our first economic sector is not tourism as you mistakenly believe, but the export of industrial equipment. We are the second car manufacturing country in the European Union and the seventh in the world, which for a country of 47 million inhabitants, is not so bad.

By the way, I have visited the United States several times and it is not exactly a country as developed as you presume, your road or rail infrastructures, your public transport systems or even the electrical equipment of your houses are third world compared to the European ones. That is also a fact.

@Stephanie Hale “Please look into the top 5 or top 10 richest people in the world and see how many of them belong to the software industry”

In the Forbes list, the ranking of millionaires varies every year, but the source of their wealth is associated with many economic sectors that do not always come from software development even if their companies top the rankings. In 2020 Jeff Bezos tops that list thanks to Amazon, the second is Elon Musk thanks to Tesla and Spacex and the third is a Frenchman, Bernard Arnault owner of LVMH. And the following on the list always tend to vary between BIll Gates, Warren Buffet, the Mexican Carlos Slim or the Spanish Amancio Ortega (owner of ZARA), among others. Some derive their wealth from finance (W Buffet), others from real estate or luxury (B. Arnault), others from the fashion business (A. Ortega) and others from software (B. Gates).

I don’t know what ranking of companies they are in, those that produce the tomatoes that we eat every day, or that of the modest German laboratory Biontech that developed the vaccine that Pfizer produces, but I am clear that technology is more than just producing software. In my 12 years of university training to be an architect and building engineer and in 25 years of experience calculating structures I have used a lot of software, I have even gotten to program my own because I have always liked the field of computer science and one of the most important software that I currently use for my work (CYPE) has been developed in Spain, a program which is used by many engineers in more than 25 countries, even if you have not heard of it in your life. But that software is useless if you are not an expert and you do not know anything about soil mechanics, you do not know anything about physics or structure theory, you do not have knowledge of advanced mathematics. Software does not solve everything.

I’m glad you’re proud of the work you do, but don’t you dare look down on the work that others do. Even the most modest work is more sophisticated and complicated than you think.

“But the companies which have a global reach to engage billions of people around the world ONLY COME FROM THE US.”

Nobody disputes that the United States has created a favorable framework for the development of these companies, but the fact that many large multinationals come from the United States is not because in the rest of the world we are all idiots, but because the size of Your country allows that when a successful company appears, it capitalizes its benefits in a country of 330 million inhabitants that allows it to internationalize more easily than a small European country. You have the example in Skype, a software developed by a Swede and a Dane that currently belongs to Microsoft, the big fish eats the little fish. If Jeff Bezos had been born in Denmark, Amazon probably would not exist today or would have been absorbed by some large multinational because obviously it could not have developed with the same strength in a country like Denmark, which has 5.8 million inhabitants compared to the United States, which has 331. There are numerous apps or software developed by Europeans that today belong to American companies.

I remember many years ago when several operating systems coexisted, OS-2, Unix, Ms-Dos, DR-Dos or Mac. Of all of them, Ms-Dos ended up triumphing with its windows (that plagiarized from mac) and the reign of the Microsoft empire began. Since then we have all had to swallow the shit of Bill Gates countless times, those blue screens of the Windows Millenimum where the ram was fragmented and left the computer hanging, or praying that the new system that he was going to impose on us was not as disastrous as the previous one. I have seen computers run faster and more stable with the Linux Windows emulator than with Windows .

To end my long comment, I give you some advice, never belittle your competitors, the world changes very quickly. Today you are up and you are an empire, as Spain was a couple of centuries ago, tomorrow you are down. The United States is a country that I appreciate, but believe it or not, it is lagging behind in some areas that you should take care of even if you think you are the best in everything. You are not.

@Stephanie Hale “I have enough education as well as professional experience of over 20 years working in 4 continents around the world. Have you ever visited Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea as well as Thailand, India, Vietnam and know the salaries of their tech professionals?”

Are you seriously comparing the salaries of Spain with those of Vietnam, India and Thailand, are you kidding? Are you really comparing poor countries like Vietnam with a per capita income of $ 2545, India ($2171) or Thailand ($7607) with Spain where the per capita income is 5 to 14 times higher than in those countries? .

I designed buildings in Ho Chi Minh (the former Saigon) in Vietnam 5 years ago and we paid the Vietnamese architects who collaborated with us $ 400 a month and with that they lived like kings there. Have you really been to Vietnam or have you only visited it through google maps?.

Spain already has the talent. Spanish engineers are highly qualified as they come out of university which is why they are already in high demand all over Europe, Pedro Sanchez misses the main asset of his country which its people. Glad to see this kinds of initiatives coming from the country’s PM but he seems to lack some basic knowledge about his own country. If he wants to see emigrant talent back it won’t be enough with bringing international corporations, also salaries must match those from neighboring countries which are just two hours flight away from most Spanish towns.
