Great with that payload we humans can put more massive space junk in orbit and ruin the planet.

It was a good wrap up although I think you need to work on your language for orbital flights. Nobody is escaping gravity, you are just going so fast that you are falling around the planet. But I would love to see your take on the Blue Origins BE4 engines that were promised to ULA, since ULA just sold the last of its Atlas rockets with the Russian engines.

  21. Braden McDorman

    August 30, 2021 at 11:25 pm

Things in low-earth orbit (or any orbit) don’t “escape” Earth’s gravity or leave Earth’s gravity well. Gravity at 160 km is still like 95% of what it is at sea level. You’re just going fast enough sideways to constantly miss the Earth while you’re falling. Orbit does not mean no gravity! If the Earth had no atmosphere to cause drag you could technically orbit a couple meters above sea level.

    • Tamir Karniely

      August 31, 2021 at 8:32 am

      Correct!

    • Geoff Kinghorne

      August 31, 2021 at 9:09 pm

Exactly, whilst she mentioned the “start of low Earth orbit”, the International Space Station’s orbit is 408 kilometres (253 miles), more than double the altitude quoted here.

    August 31, 2021 at 12:29 am

“To get into orbit you need to escape Earth’s Gravity” = absolutely false. Low Earth Orbit requires 17,500mph of going sideways, you do NOT escape Earth’s gravity at all. you’re simply going fast enough free-falling over the horizon. Please get your facts right girl. Escape velocity is 25,000mph and THAT will get you out of Earth’s gravity well.

    • Red Rick

      August 31, 2021 at 1:14 am

      Semantics.

    • Brian McGinley

      August 31, 2021 at 1:23 am

@Red Rick When someone says “I’m here to explain it all” I don’t expect fundamental lack of uderstading aout orbital mechanics. Otherwise you’re just a talking head reading off a TV-screen and you know nothing about your professed subject. Details matter, accuracy matters, and facts matter. Gravitational acceleration at orbital heights is just a few percen less than at sea-level. If you’re happy with crap such as “Beyond the pull of gravity” in a youtube video then fine, but it’s misleading EVERYBODY who may be interested but want more info. This is supposed to be about EDUCATION not MISINFORMATION.
      Have a great day!

    • Michael Nahas

      August 31, 2021 at 6:57 pm

True you need to match earth’s gravity to orbit, escape earth’s gravity to leave orbit to go to the moon or whatever.

    • Gary Eichelberger

      August 31, 2021 at 9:10 pm

@Red Rick no, it’s a lot more than semantics. It is called accuracy. we should at least know the definition of orbit in talking about space.

Great explanation, Claire! Thank you! Could you do something on Starlink? What’s the meaning of SpaceX application for 2nd generation satellites and seeking 2 configurations instead of just 1, and that whole dispute with Amazon… Don’t really understand what it entails. Thank you in advance!

    • Jake Rosendahl

      September 1, 2021 at 9:08 pm

The 2 configurations are for 2 different launch vehicles. Config 2 is for Falcon 9, Config 1 is for Starship in the future.

The gen 2 Starlink is laser interconnect for satellite to satellite communication, that way instead of user terminal, satellite, ground station to internet. You can do user terminal, satellite – satellite – satellite, ground station closest to endpoint. This is a requirement for remote places where there’s zero ground internet equipment like a lot of Alaska or Antarctica

When you explain something it’s important to get facts correct. Starship is not flying the astronauts to the Moon they will be riding in SLS NASA’s space launch system, which if I remember correctly is using space shuttle engines I don’t know if they’re making any improvements to them though. They transfer to Starship while in lunar orbit.

Also when you reach orbit you are not escaping Earth’s gravity, not even close. You go about 17,500 + miles per hour and you are in a constant free fall. You are Falling Towards Earth except you are going so fast that you miss it and you just keep perpetually falling, it’s not really perpetual though they have to use thrusters and do station-keeping to remain in orbit.

If you blasted off in a rocket and went straight up farther than any satellite or space station you would fall right back down to earth and, there would be no orbit and you will not Escape Earth’s gravity. You have to angle your flight so that your flying in an orbital path and you have to be going over 17,000 miles per hour.

At the altitude of the International Space Station there is about 90% of the gravity we have here on Earth. The zero-gravity that they are experiencing is due to them being in constant free-fall not because they have escaped Earth’s gravity.

I understand you’re trying to keep things simple but at least get the basic facts correct. I’m no expert so I’m not sure if anything else is wrong in this video I’m just a construction worker with no education.

If Elon thinks he’s going to fit 100 people on board one of those for a 9 month journey…. I think he’s done his calculations wrong… For a start how are they going to shield against radiation even if there were a crew of 5…? Water… But the amount of water needed would be around 5-6ft deep jacket around the crew… The weight would be staggering… Anyone who gets on it will need to be sedated as the risks are staggering… Even if you nail a landing… Which isn’t looking reliable…

**Before I go any further I believe in Elon Musk and his abilities and dedication, but I don’t feel that we are being told everything… **
As we know and many reports say that spaceship by all apearences is what is going to Mars and that it could take up to 100 people or cargo this has been reported a fair few times

Here you reported that SPACESHIP (without the booster) is approximately 9m wide and however tall, when you look at what it comprises of to just go 12 miles up I find I am very sceptical that a spaceship built on this platform size could contain up to 100 people, the fuel, Oxygen, food, accommodation equipment, etc to last a flight of about 80 ish days, one way with also provisions shelter at the other end and enough reserves for the spaceship to return to earth OK maybe several other unmanned trips beforehand with ongoing supplies and equipment could happen and is probable) could you imagine sitting in a small seat, limited space to move, toilet, and ablutions occupy your minds for 2 & 1/2 month’s, Surely the present size, spaceship is not the required specimen needed to get to Mars
To the moon yes with maybe 4 to 6 Astronauts for a time but not Mars
Am I being cynical or confused by what is needed for a human to survive on for an extended trip to Mars!
It just doesn’t seem big enough to carry enough supplies etc for such a long trip and with reserves if something happens on the way.
