Fun Fact: Creative Labs sued Apple around the time the first iPod came out seeking an injunction that would’ve barred Apple from selling the iPod in the US because they claimed Apple had used their “Zen” software without permission or compensation. I don’t know if they settled or Creative lost the lawsuit but obviously Creative didn’t win

I think the iPod Touch needed to die. It cost too much for what it was, and was way too close in price to the iPhone SE for the features you lost for apple not including them (touchID for example). However I really wish the iPod Nano still existed, I think something like the 7th gen would still have a place if it was currently manufactured and supported. Just a simpler music device, allow integration with apple services like Music and keep it at that. I am not sure how you would tackle Spotify and the such but apple is well known for forcing you to their way of things, so just Apple Music I suppose.

From the first day I saw PDAs, I was waiting for somebody to combine it with a cell phone so you wouldn’t need a phone, a pda, and a mp3 player to carry around.

I still use my ipod as my main music player for my car. It is a lot easier to use and gives me more control over how i like my songs played then Spotify, and it’s not affected when i drive through areas with poor reception. There is definitely still a place for the ipod, but ever since Job’s death, Apple has been turning more and more from a company that recognizes what consumers need and don’t need, to a company that tells the consumer what they need and don’t need.

I love that Bridget bookends her story about the end of iPod by showing off her Sansa “Lil Monsta” MP3 player. I had one just like it too. I never had an iPod but was given a Sansa “Lil Monsta” back in 2007. It was marketed at the time as the MP3, MP4 video and FM radio player for everyone who refuses to be an “iSheep”, ha ha. Mine went through the laundry once which wrecked its FM radio antenna but otherwise it still worked for MP3 and MP4 files. One of its features was that you could record whatever you were listening to on FM to the Lil Monsta’s local storage.

I ran iTunes for Windows to buy and download .aac music files and created a .mp3 copy of those files which I’d transfer to my Sansa Lil Monsta. I wonder if Bridget did the same.

I still have my 160 gig IPod Classic and use it during gigs. I just remember the time before the IPod and carrying a Discman with a CD case. Now I just love to be able to store all my music to my phone. One device for everything, versus carrying multiple things. I don’t stream music.

Honestly, I kind of like the Apple music subscription service – but I do agree that too many things these days are out of users hands. At least you can burn your purchased iTunes music to disc, and it is drm free…but that is a huge issue with Apple TV. If I bought the show, I should be able to keep it, burn it, copy it, and play it on any device.

They should turn the iPhone MIni into the new iPod Touch. That, or make it into the 2023 iPhone SE…

  59. Daiv G

    May 15, 2022 at 4:17 pm

I’m pretty sure there’s a couple billion iPods out there to go buy and use if you’re nostalgic for them. If you really insist it must somehow be an Apple branded music player (although there are still many impressive, current portable music player options), go buy an iPhone SE and do all the things the iPod 2019 did at the end.

I’ve experienced the newest one spoiler alert it’s absolute trash, dies in under an hour, the screen is so small and the camera is so grainy. Trust me Apple should’ve discontinued it a while ago but it still gave a lot of childhood memories

Ironically there is a song ” You’ll Never Miss the Water Till the Well Runs Dry” I hope people start to see how important having and iPod and having your music separate from your phone is and also the weakness of music streaming services.

Imagine not being able to play music through out a long day at work.. while using your phone you have to worry about battery drain or even going far from your phone. I actually want and prefer a separate music player, I hate hate having my songs pause when a phone call comes in so I keep my music separate. My first Apple device was the first iPod Touch 4, upgraded to the 5 and currently have the 6 which goes everywhere with me. It also the best music player without having to buy an iPhone ( I’m a Android user ). I however baught an iPod 7 because I felt this moment was coming eventually.

As of the discontinuation of the iPod I’m currently seeking alternative Mp3 players or repurposing my previous Android phone with a good music app.

When it comes to music, I feel that you loose alot of control by streaming, plus you’re paying for your music when you can just buy your songs and create your own playlist ( or download them to mp3 and store it offline as a backup. All in all I will miss the iPod, but I’m discovering ways I can get the same or eventually a better experience

R.I.P iPod Touch you were truly one of kind 😢😢

My first iPod was the iPod Classic with 160GB, I never filled it up, I just like having extra storage, just in case (still do) I was very anti Apple in the mid 2000’s, I had a Zune, however when I got a Mac, I felt I had to get an iPod. It served me well.
