I love this series of professionals comparing fiction to reality. That being said, you NEED to tell these people that this is fiction and that these are supposed to be fun interviews. There is no need to be super critical about how someone is holding the bow sideways, it’s a video game after all. “You must be fun at parties” is a perfect comment that sums up everything I’m trying to say.

Idk I think that comment on the position of the bow gave me more information on the real physics of the movement. I don’t think she’s being super critical, I think she’s just unfamiliar with the content of the games so she’s just imparting as much knowledge as she can. And she gives the games credit where credit is due.

You need to educate your self, google Lars Andersen he even shoot down incoming arrow with his own arrow. And of course Joerg Sprave with his instant legolas. Maybe you are good at your sport, but open your mind and make sometimes something different or make it more fun(archery become very boring, sry)

Don’t you want to hit an animals heart or atleast lungs to end it quickly? Wouldn’t a shot in the guts spoil the meat and make the animal suffer?

Not only does she not seem to understand the games or character backstories creating inconsistencies with her opinions, but also similarly to what many others are bringing up, competition archery is wildly different than survival and combat archery.

I’m sure everything she is saying is 100% correct for olympic archery and for shooting compound bows but she is wrong about a number of things concerning non compound bows or situations outside competition spaces. Like what she said about the thief arrow being a realistic depiction is wrong because in pretty much every type of bow but compound or modern bows the arrow bends and wobbles a lot which isn’t shown in thief. If you want to see how much an arrow wobbles watch this video by smarter every day

“running and shooting at the same time is not recommended” has this woman heard of the mongols or the japanese. moving and shooting is very realistic and definitely occurred in history.

I find it fascinating that the way that MEDIA depicts things now are just uninformative ( mostly on purpose ) because of the “Cool Factor”.
much like public school… you don’t learn anything usefull by experiencing it, but some parts were fun.

i practiced HEMA for 5 years, and while i agree with most of her points… she is a Olympic Archer.
there is no pressure to shooting, arming and re-shooting a bow in a Shooting Range.
so her experience in actual “Combat Archery” is almost non-existant.

in my opinion? yes, most of these are ridiculous and stupid simply because it looks cool… but that is part of the “Escape Fantasy”, i don’t play games for Realism.

if i want realism in shooters, i go play Airsoft.
if i want realism in medieval games, i go do some HEMA training.
if i want realism in Simulators, i go do LIFE.

I don’t want to criticize her, I have zero doubts she’s insanely good at what she does and she could be a heck of a consultant but this felt really flat. Sorry, I really want to like her insights but yeah.

I love when the specialists understand they’re reviewing movies or games (aka “fiction”) and go with it, crack a laugh and tell how it could be done better or some related anecdote instead of you know, “that’s impossible moving on”. Sorry, it’s all in the interest of making it more fun. Have a nice day!

I don’t know why people feel the need to ask archers to shoot apples off their heads. Yet they’d never ask that of a pistol shooter. There is a reason why arrows were a mainstay of armies for millenia, people! They will kill you!

2:25 One or two years ago a German olympic archer participated in a game show where she had to shoot while walking sideways on a treadmill. The treadmill was perpendicular to the target and she had to twist her body towards it. Scored 103 total across 5×3.

I’m a competitive archer as well, most video games depict the techniques, (drawing, anchoring, release) quite accurately. It’s the archery depicted in TV or movies that gets on my nerves sometimes.

  54. Zoltán Szabó

    November 25, 2020 at 11:43 am

First, these games are not for teaching archery:
Second, as she is an Olympic archer, she don’t know the traditional techniques, like speed shooting, etc.

    • Morten Jacobsen

      November 27, 2020 at 1:47 am

Have you shoot team competition? Where time is very limited.. Sounds pretty speed sensestive… Jeah it is caus ive done it. Or did you think yerking your string one third back ans just letting go was a valid teknuiqe..?

  61. Vlad Miltchev

    November 26, 2020 at 2:08 am

Please do not try to push an arrow through your body. You can cap off the teeth of a broadhead using a feather or hollow tube like a pen and pull it out back the way it came. This is likely what was done historically. (Obviously, in modern day, do not touch it and go to the hospital)

  63. Hodol Hati

    November 26, 2020 at 9:10 am

I have no bow experience but I believe thinking about wind and movement is something only olympic shooters will think about. If you are a natural shooter, you will shoot first and think later. Thinking will make you miss.

PS: There is a korean olympic shooter who is almost blind, and still was at point the best male archer. When asked, he said that he’s good because he does not think too much about the target because he can’t see.

    • Morten Jacobsen

      November 27, 2020 at 1:30 am

Trad shooters in wa compete at 30 meters, plenty of time for wind to caus drift, even rain has to be accouted for and the target is statonary so no need to think about it, the entohrinal cortex is always calculating regardles of moving target or not

Alrighty, I’ll be the one to ask it…..
What is it with Olympic Archers and all that GEAR they put on their bow. To us laypeople it just looks like the bow could hit the bullseye by itself and all you need to do is pull the string back. Obviously it is more than that but you gotta admit when watching the Olympics (or any event) involving archery just looks the winner comes down to who has the best equipment. Less skill, more tech.

Right off the hop she’s wrong about canting the bow… if you’ve ever shot trad bows and know anything about archery canting is extremely useful. Using your knuckles and the side of the bow you can form a V and use that to get the distance to target, size of your target and you form a primitive crosshair.

Stop using Olympic archers for these videos. They use a very different form of archery. Drives me insane

Second Amendment to the United States Constitution – “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Fundamentally what created our country was our ability as a people to rise against the government as they become tyrannical in nature.

The Second Amendment IS the voice of the people, with no Second Amendment there is no First. Without even considering the empirical data, and self defense arguments which have merit of their own, it allows the people the option of non-compliance to Government which without, is forfeit. I’m going to take a shot in the dark and imagine that Hong Kong’s protests don’t favor the protestors having to fight back against THEIR tyrannical government with archery equipment. If you disagree with Government or Politics, the 2nd Amendment is the right of the PEOPLE. I may have been born in Korea, but I was raised American, Protect the FREE PEOPLE.

She should have talked about the different types of bows first, primitive self bows, traditional recurves, long bows, and R/D bows, modern compound bows. Same with arrow material wood, aluminum, graphite, CF. No mention of how arrow spine and bow poundage need to be matched. While none of this formatting issue is her fault she could have offered advice of where to start.

In combat your not going to have 15 seconds to notch and aim your bow. Competent trained archers shoot a arrow in 5 seconds, where skilled archers are half that. It really shows the areas where sport archers are lacking.

She is completely right on the very first crysis one but in this case I believe it was too keep field of view open for the player as that was a large bow and would cut the screen in half if straight up and proper. She is still very very right on her analysis.

  155. gizmonomono

    January 9, 2021 at 9:16 am

An olympic archer has nothing to do with anything depicted in these games. They are the most closed minded people when it comes to archery. Very limited knowledge on the subject.
In almost every video, she was wrong about something.
For example, canting the bow Will help you aim on a bow that doesn’t have a sight, like her olympic bow.
You would not scratch your ear or cheek if you draw your bow more. Ever seen kyudo? Or manchu style archery?
Also, nocking the arrow can be done extremely fast. Just because it takes her 15 seconds to shoot an arrow it doesn’t mean others can’t do it faster.
Just the wrong expert for this subject.

  156. Matthew Pong

I get she shoots off a center rest and probably hasn’t watched her arrows in slow motion… but that arrow coming off that bow wouldn’t look anything like that. It would must certainly flex and oscillate in the air. 7:02

    • Mike Knierim

      January 12, 2021 at 8:18 pm

depends on the bow smartass, the bow has an indentation for the arrow. The arrow doesnt have to bend around the bow so there will barely be any flex or oscillitation.

  175. martijn Lodewijk

Did you guys use an “olympic” archer so that people think this information is more credible? Because I have to say you really should have chosen a different “expert”. You’re showing footage of (except for crysis 3) wooden, sometimes improvised bows to somebody who is using a compound bow. The Disconnect becomes really apparent when she talks about plastic nocks and that it takes her 15 seconds to fire an arrow. You should have chosen Lars Anderson who can probably recreate all the shots in the used footage, including the jumping shots etc.

  176. Chris Herne

    January 12, 2021 at 1:04 pm

About the ability to load and shoot quickly, just do a search for Lars Andersen and look at some of his videos; yes it’s possible and for archers that are trained for war and not sport shooting, this would be quite possible…

  178. Anatomical X

    January 12, 2021 at 4:28 pm

I love, that even still to this day, no game manages to get archery right. For one, the arrow should be loaded on the right side of the bow, as this allows for an exponentially increased reload speed. An arrow being fired on the left side of the bow only exists in modern sports archery.
