4:45 – just to clarify for folks who might be confused, “Arousing” in terms of the brain just means it triggers more neural activity. Not that they’re irresistibly attracted to your face.

asking a neuroscientist about emotions is like asking an AI to be self conscious. Or an ornithologist to be a bird.

It’s dangerous to not specify which types of meditations are helpful because some meditations according to studies can cause psychosis.

I started meditating when I was 16 and ended up with a psychotic episode (I’m off medications but only do neidan meditations only occasionally) and no I wasn’t diagnosed with schizophrenia

I love that he said, we should try to not use medication so readily. I got diagnosed with PTSD and my former therapist said I should consider taking anti-depressants but I refused, despite my disableing anxiety and depression. And after spending years actively working on my thought patterns and trying to heal my psyche on my own, I’m proud to say I’m a very happy person now, who’s very happy to be alive. And most of my PTSD symptoms have actually faded away. It absolutely is possible to change your brain without medication <33

In my perspective feelings and emotions is what makes us humans, is part of our human nature as well as are part of our own capacity to be able to create. Feelings and emotions are what make the intangible into tangible.
Emotionally intelligence doesn’t have to be something about age, it’s just just part of our own personality , who we are and helps us to understand ourselves and others as well as helps to make an inner control , balance our inner self and helps to have growth mindset.
Who is more sensitive, women or men? In my experience and opinion, doesn’t depend on gender, in my perspective every person has different levels of sensitivity. I am a highly sensitive person, in my personal experience people have different levels of sensitive.Higher the level of sensitivity, the person will have higher capacities. I don’t know why, I always feel men are more sensitive than women: we can see it in very different professional forms: scientists, philosophers, poets, designers, chiefs, businessmen, technicians, artists, etc , men have a highly level of sensitivity and understanding.
Love: People needs to understand and feel what is Love. Love is what we feel for ourselves, in order to have positive feelings, emotions within ourselves. Love makes the shift in our lives and our mindset, love connects heart and mind, etc
Love is freedom, love is respect, love is peace, love is harmony, love is the core of empathy, love is our Energy, our light, Love is who we are.

14:07 I like it! I will give it a try. Taking into consideration, the amount of stress I have had in my life that has shrunk the portions of my brain that create more and new neural transmitters , I’ve been studying neural plasticity because its obvious that my brain isn’t working at 100%. There are days when I can barely finish sentences because I can’t think of the words I’m trying to say. On some of those days I will not speak at all because it’s too frustrating.

Is emotion regulation a specialization that humans have over animals? If so, to what extent?
Animals do have emotions, but can they regulate them? Because emotion regulation requires complex thinking and greater self-awareness.

My brain must be really tiny then

  53. @Aidan1488

    October 11, 2024 at 4:15 am

Men think that women are more emotional because a ton of men simply don’t think that women’s opinions are important.
“This makes you emotional but not me. So, you must be exaggerating”
“This makes you angry and I don’t understand why, nor do I care, you are just emotional”
Just look at the History of things like “hysteria”. It’s pretty much a resumen of how men have dismissed what women feel through history, and blaming it to “women just being weak of character”.
Talk with any guy that honestly thinks women are more emotional than men, and more often than not you’ll find a guy that actually cares very little about the women in his life. And by that I mean: he has never, not even once, cared to talk to them and genuinely find out why are they feeling the way they do. He has just shrugged, declared it a womanly mistery, and walked away.

  54. @chanklin

    October 11, 2024 at 6:55 am

I think it would be great if people would stop using the terms “positive” and “negative” emotions as all emotions are positive in the sense that they are providing us information on ourselves and our surroundings. In my opinions, better descriptive words (if they are needed) would be “pleasant” and “unpleasant”.

Many PhD are religious, and they don’t let it affect their research. Many famous scientific minds are/were religious and they still pushed their fields further.

I will say, as a transgendered person who use to have male hormones but now has female hormones, men and women absolutely experience their emotions in different ways. Trust me guys, you do not want to go thru life without emotions.
Due to trauma, I had repressed all my emotions and I can tell you some things that you might not expect your emotions to be usefull for.
Making any kind of choice is impossible, “just weigh your pro’s and con’s” problem being, that without emotions, you cannot attribute any weight to those pro’s and con’s, you are litterally indifferent to just about anything. I would say it’s not fun and boring, but these are emotions to and well, you don’t feel that either. Bests I can describe it is based on an ancient saying: Without emotions, are you sure you are alive?
I have since learned to unrepress them and learn to manage them again, which is quite the overwhelming experience

Evolutionary history? Nope!!! Evolution is a fairy-tale for grown-ups.

If anyone wants to know which major facets of evolution are fairy tales, please reply to me asking for it. It needs just one person to ask, and the rest get it for free. It is not my own list, but has been built up by many others. It’s quite insightful when put in the way they have listed it, and I will forward to you.

Of course, if you troll, I’ll simply ignore it.

One thing is absolutely certain. Both views, evolution and non-evolution, cannot be correct. Neither can both be wrong, because there IS NO third. Period. If you have a problem with this statement, then you will need to visit logic.

if you try to change your emotions through sheer practice you are likely to experience a “better” life. but there is an argument for not being able to experience life to its fullest.
because if you get rid of something through repetition. you cant of gotten rid of all of it.
example, if you have a person with a lot of false pride . and 1 person with very little false pride.
what person is more likely to do something “about” it, and who is more likely to do something with it. when it comes to completely removing false pride.

Another psychologist that avoids mentioning psyche/soul… Everything is in the brain, there are wires, circuits, we are like machines. I dunno man, this materialistic science is lacking something for me. Especially considering the fact that matter is still a mystery while scientists act like it is an undeniable fact full of verified experiments and proof.

I disagree with some of your thoughts on medication, it seems to become more divisive in our field day after day. I don’t think we can really make sweeping generalizations on it. Every situation is different. Some ppl really need medication and need it permanently. Some need don’t need it at all. Some need a small amount for a short period of time.

Nice video. Love your points and agree with everything you’re saying on emotions. So glad there are people out here on social media breaking down stigma and associations with eemotions & gender.

His explanation about feelings within the first 2 minutes reminds me of this video of a mother in Gaza telling her child that fear is okay, that everyone feels it, and asked her daughter id she thought her mother felt fear? And the sweet little girl shook her head. The mother went on to explain that she does, and it’s necessary we all feel it, and that Allah gave them feelings for all of these reasons.
She explained it like he did, and in so much more depth and so beautifully. I love how in tune humans have been with science over history, and how important the cross over of humanity and science truly is.

In relation to the “are women more emotional than men”, he only noted that differences occur in identifying linguistic or social cues of emotion.. this just substantiates everything that gender is socially constructed – biologically speaking, if we did a controlled experiment of two people, man and woman, both raised exactly the same way, I’m sure there would be no difference.. interesting points to consider

Women seem to have the set list of emotion/(s) that they’re going to focus on for the entire day figured out… Before they go to sleep the previous night.

As someone whose life was literally saved by psychiatric medications, I hate it when a doctor opines about “over medicating” and “you should try meditation”. Medication is a tool, like cognitive behavior therapy and meditation and exercise, and as such, belongs in every practitioners tool box when they are evaluating someone for help.

One of the great things about medication is that it can begin to provide relief for the sufferer of the mental illness in as little as two weeks, where some of the other tools tend to take quite bit longer to show positive results. Why would anyone allow their patient to be in pain for longer than necessary if they have the ability to provide relief faster? Of course, if the patient doesn’t want medication, that’s different… but to be in a position of authority and tell them, “Nah, let’s talk about how to think differently for a while first and see how that goes” is insane to me.

My daughter and I are Autistic with ADHD. We used to take medication to help on focus and emotional regulation. We found solutions on IFS – Internal Family Systems therapy and NeuroFeedback. NeuroFeedback changes the networks of your brain. It really works on behaviour change and without medication. I hate these chemicals. One side effect is that you may feel like a zombie. You become numb, it’s hard to make decisions because your brain is “asleep”; you don’t even feel like reading or watching a movie. You merely exist. The other is loss of appetite (the most common side effect for ADHD treatment). My daughter and I, we’re skinny. Society already thinks we don’t eat at all. I prefer to see her healthier and eating healthy than “on drugs”. I hope I can help someone out there. Take care of yourselves. Stay healthy. There are other solutions beyond medication.

Why are most of the men in these comments so scared (an emotion btw) to admit that they have the same emotional range as anyone else?? It is very unfair that men in our society are seen as apathetic and only angry. It is okay to have emotions of any sort, just because most men hide them does not mean that they don’t have the same emotional capacity as women. Men are scrutinized in society for showing weakness; this is often is incorrectly portrayed as love, happiness, sadness, and any “soft” emotions. This does NOT mean that women are more emotional! It simply means that many men, are more often than not, do not realize that everyone (themselves included) has an extremely vast range of emotions. These arguments claiming women “are more emotional than men”, are simply ignorant and the reason men do not understand that emotions are normal! This argument is largely rooted in misogyny because in pretty much all of our societies, women are seen as inferior. Emotions do not make you inferior, they make us human. Everyone shows emotion, it just depends on how we are (unknowingly) conditioned in society

Man I wish emotional intelligence was taught in schools. I truly believe one of the main reasons society is so messed up right now is because many (if not most) people just have no idea how to regulate their emotions. I only learned how to be in the drivers seat of my own brain, so to speak, by practicing meditation seriously for several years. It’s amazing what you are capable of when you start to be the one driving rather than being jerked around by emotions you don’t even understand.

i feel like men and women experience emotions similarly, but social and cultural factors influence how they express them. Women might be more open about their emotions because society encourages emotional expression in women while discouraging it in men, the society expects men to be stoic or unemotional.

6:30 it seems, the gut and brain is so connected, that even the foods we eat (or drink, like coffee) can effect our depression levels. “We know there are ways to change the brain that don’t require medication” – social change is by far the biggest impact upon wellbeing, and in an individualistic western society that’s a big problem. This focus on individualistic ‘self care’ ‘wellbeing’ strategies is not the answer, they help but are band aids. We need social change, holistic social model of health and wellbeing.

about becoming smarter, changing your diet to have more fresh fruits, fish, and nuts and cut down completely high sugar and fast food can have a dramatic effect. You also want to filter your water, but seeing the effect of that is more long term. Heavy metals in water can damage your brain long term.

I don’t really feel like he actually answered this, so emotions can be contagious primarily due to mirror neurons that fire off when you watch somebody else do something (originally discovered in macaque monkeys where they were able to see that monkey B watching money A peel and eat a banana lit up the same regions of the brain in Monkey B as Monkey A, as though Monkey B themself was peeling and eating a banana) and is likely influenced by von economo neurons, which are neurons that serve SEVERAL functions, some of which are deeply integrated in social communication/relationships/emotions.
