Activism is a tough job, especially for young people yearning for immediate change — something climate activist Melati Wijsen has learned over ten years of pushing for environmental protection, starting at age 12 in her home on the island of Bali, Indonesia. How can young changemakers acquire the skills they need and keep from burning out? Wijsen offers three pieces of advice for anybody seeking to make lasting, sustainable progress.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

    OMG I resonated with what you said. Children don’t grow up wanting to be changemakers. It just happens. There’s an injustice and you feel you have no choice but to get involved, because if you don’t who’ll change it. And yes you get burn out. I’m not even a child, I’m in my mid 20s.

    The easiest way to change the world around you is to change yourself. Then every action you take becomes part of this change. You soon begin to see these changes reflected back to you from the world. Chaotic causality and karma are tools just as much as they are traps.

    • Khondamir Karshiev

      December 24, 2021 at 1:08 pm

      I’ve met a lot of adults, and I know that they”d rather go complaining about how everything is awful instead of taking action. (whereas most of them are the reason for its happening).
      The way I see it:
      Adults = problem maker
      Youth = problem solver
      (not always of course)

    A tremendous amout of impact could be made if people would simply make a personal choice to purchase products that are more in alignment with earth friendly practices. Hemp products, selective harvest forestry, rotational graze based animal farming, and alternate energy production methods such as geothermal, hydro, and nuclear. Everyone always wants to address restrictions and law curtailing damaging practices but if people would spend their dollars prudently those flawed business practices that are so unfriendly to the earth would quickly fall away as they wouldn’t have money to sustain them.

    The roadmap is to have your political campaign be financed by oligarchs in order to acquire power in a system so corrupt that it will assassinate you for interfering with profit margins. Only concessions they will ever make are social, they will never cede an economic system that exclusively benefits them, while simultaneously exploiting the rest of us. We will not win by playing their game, and most people are too soft to accept the grim reality of what has to be done in order to overturn the reigns of power to a direct democracy.
