The rudder foil is the same shape and concept as our nuke submarines propellers. low noise and drag, high functioning efficient foil able to bleed off the boiling that occurs.

Star Trek style ! Love it ! Love the concept ! Next step… making it a hydrofoil. By staying over the water, it will reach a greater speed. Why it is not already that?

    • @guygillmore2970

      June 16, 2025 at 3:17 am

It goes too fast for hydrofoils. The top surface cavitates at high speeds, ruining the effect

    • @mm74forums7

      June 16, 2025 at 9:22 am

Resistance of HF grows faster with speed than the resistance of a planing hulls. Also for such speeds it needs to use a cavitating/ventilating HFs. These can be quite unstable on rippled see surface.

    • @skyak4493

      June 16, 2025 at 12:57 pm

Hydrofoils get lift primarily from suction on the leeward side. At these speeds (over 50mph) that suction preasure is so low the water boils and then the bubbles collapse, damaging the foil surface. On this craft, the leward side of the foil is just an air bubble. Being just one face deflecting fluid it has no lift advantage over a planing hull.
The other point is that the air foil is pulling so hard upward that the water foil needs to pull downward to keep it in the water. There is no need for hydrofoils to lift the craft out of the water, just adjust the water foil angle to not pull down as hard. The “hulls” are mearly to help control the water foil position relative to the surface. The way this craft fails is by getting too high in the water resulting in insuficient downforce from the water foil. The craft will fly away dangling from it’s kite accelerating leeward until the kite loses lift.

And that’s also not a flat comparison since the equation changes a ton based on mining tech, and power sources for the EV.

  30. @viewsthatfade

    June 17, 2025 at 3:45 am

I had to ask Chatgpt why they are wearing masks in a sailboat and this is why.

The reason the person is wearing a full oxygen mask and helmet in the SP80 boat is because the craft reaches extremely high speeds—over 80 knots (approximately 150 km/h or 93 mph)—which creates very high aerodynamic forces.

    🛡 1. Protection Against High-Speed Wind Forces
    At those speeds:

The wind pressure is intense, even inside a semi-enclosed cockpit.

A standard helmet wouldn’t protect adequately against sudden impacts or forces on the head and neck.

A face mask helps prevent wind-induced breathing difficulty and debris inhalation.

    🌬 2. Oxygen Supply
The oxygen mask is likely used to:

Provide pressurized air or oxygen to assist breathing during high G-forces or intense physical stress.

It may also help simulate aeronautical safety systems, considering the boat mimics a jet fighter cockpit in layout and speed dynamics.

    👨‍✈ 3. Aviation-Style Safety Integration
The SP80 boat is highly engineered and inspired by aerospace technology:

The helmet design and harness system resemble that of a fighter jet.

The driver (or pilot) endures extreme acceleration, wind buffeting, and sudden directional changes, necessitating such protective gear.

I did see a clip about this a while ago, and find the concept fascinating! Watching this clip, I was wondering about how long before some one takes this idea to the Booneville Salt Flats to set a land record. I had figured that the next record would involve a more rigid wing design, similar to the modern aluminum tube framed hang gliders. Never considered the paraglider type wing. I remember the early ones and they were very slow. I guess they have come a long way too. I am curious if the wing you guys are using is a lot stiffer than the usual wings??? I flew a traditional hang glider up until about 1983.The double surface gliders were just coming out.

That doesn’t sound like much compared to a car, but the speed record for a sail boat is about 75mph (65 knots). So, I was doing 1/3 the sailing speed record in a tiny 14ft tin boat!

  67. @my9129

    June 18, 2025 at 3:55 pm

All that white foam and wake suggests wasted energy. Seems like the optimal design would have extremely minimal but crazy strong struts connected to foils completely underwater that reconfigure on the fly to do what is needed at different speeds and conditions. It wouldn’t touch the surface much or create much disturbance in passing. The rest of the boat that flies over the surface would be minimized too.

    • @Artist1888

re the foils…you have probably looked into it but hydroplane power boat racers use wedge shapes prob foils that cavitate alright but deliver lift at very high speed through the water (‘chopping’ through the surface), might have to deploy them only after get up to a certain speed …ahh getting too complex …

If it floats on water with a sail of any kind it’s a sail boat I love it

The next advance must be to add shock-absorbing suspension to the hulls – I suggest carbon fibre planing “shells” hinged at the front of each floatation hull, and held away from them further back by shock absorbers. This would massively reduce the forward vector energy lost to the impact of the waves on the rigid hulls. Race car designers realised long ago the importance of good suspension to improve performance. Monohull power boats would also benefit massively from this improvement, with a single outer hull-form suspended a short gap away from the main hull, to absorb much of the uncomfortable pounding onto wave crests. With a bit of clever engineering, the energy-absorbing gap could be variable, to suit varying wave conditions.

Reduce the unsprung mass from 100% to a minimum of the shell mass

there is an old saying….”all it takes is Time and Money” to achieve anything possible ………..simply keep moving forward fearlessly and you will arrive ! I have sailed most oceans and seas within my lifetime, I wish you fair winds and time to find your Winds and Waves……..there is nothing more beautiful than finding the point where Human and Nature intersect !! Thank you for being the next generation of explorers so that we Humans may find our true place upon the planet. Fair Winds Amigos, keep moving forward !!!!!!!!

Wind surfer sail vs. kite sail… interesting competition. Eventually the kite sail will hold the record, because the windspeed is higher 100 feet off the water.
