James Dyson is like Tim Cooks brother that refused to help him develop good cooling for Macbooks because of “that one time when”

  11. Trogdor Burninator

    November 30, 2021 at 11:51 pm

The answer to the thumbnail question is: Dyson’s bladeless fan is not bladeless. It just hides its perfectly normal bladed blower-fan inside the base of the appliance, and distributes it to the ring with ducts, at very low efficiency.

Who edited this video? Stop changing the framing every few seconds. It’s extremely annoying. I get it if you want to zoom in or out as a way to emphasize what he is about to say, but when you do it jerky-jerky like this, it’s only annoying…

  85. Ethan Riley

  88. lando cardano

There’s a real good reason his products and technology are as expensive as they are, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it’s fairly priced. It’s very evident how much heart and soul him and his team put into each piece of engineering.

  89. DasJulian

    December 4, 2021 at 12:17 am

Ah yes, James Dyson, the man who campaigned for Brexit and then moved his company to Singapore. Scumbag.

  90. Festivejelly

    December 4, 2021 at 12:18 am

He explains suction in a really bad way. Basically the blades displace the air which creates a vacuum effect… hence the turn vacuum cleaner. It doesnt “draw in the air” at all. The gas molecules simply fill the void left by the fan blades.

  91. Amos Teo

    December 4, 2021 at 12:25 am

Took a chance by overspending and bougt a Dyson vacuum. Product was terrible right away but I tried to get by. Just when I was outside the 90 day warranty, I contacted Dyson and they were awful.. I will never buy a Dyson again, and I tell everyone who asks.

  137. Fynn825

I hate dyson products. Unreliable, over engineered and expensive.

  138. Pierre Hulsebus

    December 6, 2021 at 12:56 am

A better question is why is anyone buying a 300 dollar fan? This is such an overpriced, unnecessarily complex device. There are starving people and we’re buying a 600 Dollar fan because it has no blades. I have never understood the value of this product.

  139. Bob C.

    December 6, 2021 at 12:59 am

There’s a fan in the base. It has blades. Also, there is no such thing as a digital motor.

  140. bbbf09

    December 6, 2021 at 1:13 am

    Don’t encourage him Wired!
I bought a dyson vac cleaner in the 1990s. Lasted 2 years. Brittle plastics and cheap components. No suprise. Waste of money. My bad.
I find it beyond Incredible that this guy can persuade people to pay $650 on a desk fan thats not better than a $15 bargain basement Walmart one – other than it looks better.
That I suppose this ability is one kind of genius in its own right – or at least blatant chutzpah. Not something I admire or respect though. As a design engineer myself I don’t really respect his engineering. He doesn’t have really have much in the way of engineering know how or credentials. Just maybe some eye or flair for aesthetics that somehow hynotises people into paying 50 times overwhat the product is worth.
His recent billion $ foray / mess into electric cars design indicates he is perhaps at his peak in desk fans and hoovers.
Also don’t like him because he forced brexit on the UK – then immediately pissed off to live in Singapore. Jerk

5:08 I would say file for a provisional patent pending first. A patent may not initially be perfect and the cost is very high. A provisional patent pending will allow you to go public and still protect your idea. If within 12 months you can’t market the idea, stop the process and don’t lose awesome amounts of money.

I had a old dot matrix printer, and, after, ah, what was it, 25 years, it still worked, but, the ribbon was dry, as, a bone. Now, have a new one, mabye few years aold, and, of course the ink is gone or the nozzles are clogged, and dried out, it’s like a, “One use device” you buy it, use, it, just for that ink, that, came with it, and, then, now it is, just a big paperweight. I have a idea, but, chemistry, is, just out of my understanding. Where’s Macgyver when ya need him Eh! Am I right! Anyways, get inventing, you, inventive types, you….. if you don’t, I will. 🙂 Later Gators

I guess the dyson fan technically uses a Venturi to create a low pressure zone behind the ring which then create the directional flow. Similar devices are used for some tube conveyors and vacuum systems that use compressed air as an energy source. Very interesting

Thanks for the insights. But lest be honest, your blade-less fan is not really blade-less, the blades (or turbine if you will) is in the base. More of a ducted fan. That quibble aside, calling it a blade-less fan is a fine bit of marketing. That is an important lesson as well. You can invent a nice clever thing but if you cannot sell it you are kind of spinning your wheels.

I dont agree with most. Some is ok lol

  279. Peter

    December 11, 2021 at 10:31 pm

quick answer: It actually has blades and hes ducting the air to the blow hole using effects found out during the cold war. Due to the fact he has to spin small blades really quick, it is less efficient and powerful then a actually conventional fan. This guy makes money out of over complicating the wheel basicaly.

  280. J L

    December 11, 2021 at 10:35 pm

    Not “bladeless”.

  281. iammimic79

    December 11, 2021 at 11:00 pm

It’s not bladeless at all in the bottom there is a turbine which has fins on it which are essentially blades.

  282. Ric Shaymin

    December 11, 2021 at 11:06 pm

How did you come up with the idea for the Dyson Sphere?

    • Ryan Miller

      December 11, 2021 at 11:28 pm

      It wasn’t him.

  283. Nobody

    December 11, 2021 at 11:16 pm

He did not invent the dyson sphere.

Had my Dyson vacuum since 2008 and still going strong with two cats and a 4 bedroom house.

  288. Wayne Halliday

    December 12, 2021 at 12:47 am

Truly an amazing innovator? Like the way Dyson innovated engineered obsolescence into their last few corded vacuum designs? Like how they have been deliberately designed to have the motor fail at around 3 years of usage because it can no longer “breath/cool itself” and the consumer can’t stop it happening because Dyson wrapped the motor in a hidden filter rather than have a replaceable rear exhaust HEPA filter like every single vacuum has had as a design necessity since the beginning of time for vacuums?
…….. now some would say THAT is pure evil sorcery 😛

  289. Stooch

    December 12, 2021 at 12:58 am

dyson makes garbage products that are overcomplicated, for the sole purpose of making money

Is this the guy that was all brexit and then moved Dyson manufacturing to south east Asia ? What does England most excel at? Hypocrisy

  297. buixote

    December 12, 2021 at 5:24 pm

I’m just shocked and saddened that they’ve ignored the most significant vacuum cleaner advance: the retractable cord.

  298. Peter Sharkey

    December 12, 2021 at 5:52 pm

So the bladeless fan is made with a spinning set of blades in the lower part that push what he calls a “blade of air” up into the inside of a what he also calls a “circular blade” that pushes the air out of a narrow opening. Got it.

  299. Rodney Hemingway

    December 12, 2021 at 6:37 pm

A blade less fan. The blades are in the base so it’s not a blade less.

  300. Peter Jarnes

What I learned today… Dyson is a man and not just the name of a company. 😅

Such a good video! Loved getting to know who this man is and the impact he has had. Loved hearing his perspective on things.

I like how out of all the things this vacuum designer explained, the most cumbersome explanation was what “suction” is

  313. Benabus The Third

    December 13, 2021 at 12:14 am

Pro Brexit dickhead who offshored the second he realised that it would hurt his company. Disgusting man tbh.

Pro tip: A Brazilian named Andreas Pavel invented the Walkman in the 70s. Then Sony stole the idea and started selling it. It took 30 years for the guy to start getting the royalties for his invention (plus 10 million dollars for patent infringement).

  316. Steve Govea

  320. Joseph Wallace

No wonder his products cost more than average. It’s a compliment.

  321. dan smith

    December 13, 2021 at 3:13 pm

it’s not a bladeless fan, there’s a set of blades buried deep in it stuck to a very high rpm motor in the base, this despicable individual is a charlatan and his products are rapidly getting of worse and worse quality

  322. Jean C Taveras

    December 13, 2021 at 4:10 pm

When I heard about “Dyson” I always thought that man must be a genius! After watching this video, that has been confirmed

Was it just me that thought Maury was gonna be explaining the dyson to us?

  324. Mr G

    December 13, 2021 at 4:40 pm

The answer is actually very simple: he didn’t do it! Nor did anyone at Dyson LOL! These fans are terrible—perform worse on every single metric (airflow, ambient sound level) than a bog standard pedestal fan at 10x the price. They look nice though!

  325. Zach Tutor

    December 13, 2021 at 5:04 pm

Anyone know where to get that pencil holder?

  326. Arty Effem

    December 13, 2021 at 6:31 pm

I’ll never say it’s impossible to make a bladeless fan, but Dyson’s fans are not bladeless, they rely on a motor-driven impeller, which amounts to a fan with blades. One type of sucker sells to another type.

  337. Iq Nill

    December 13, 2021 at 11:40 pm

    Last question/answer – YES!
I’ve been arguing exactly that for years, with very poor results.
Designers and engineers scoff at one-another, while that should be one – a coherent unit.
Design must follow engineering and engineering must allow design.
Thank you, I will play that to all my students, so they don’t think I’m an old craizie.
