What if we had a map of … everything? Jack Dangermond, a visionary behind the geographic information system (GIS) technology used to map and analyze all kinds of complex data, walks us through the interconnected technologies gathering information about every crack and corner of the Earth. Learn how this “living atlas” and “geospatial nervous system” can help us better understand our changing planet — and let nature guide our actions towards a more sustainable future.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

I have deep suspicions. Ultra wealthy dude wanting to map every inch of the planet? Sure, that can but used for good, but I really don’t trust that his motives are all for the good of the environment. I have zero doubt it will be snagged by corporations and used for their own selfish purposes.

I believe there’s a disconnect between money and the the planet we inhabit. What primary asset do our Banks hold to sustain the value of the money they issue that we all use in our everyday lives? Money was based on gold, a gold standard that Central Banks held. But we need a new ecological standard if we’re to begin to live sustainably upon this planet. So why not establish the planet itself as each nations primary Central Banks asset and have them mint and print our currencies with the image of the Banks primary asset (the planet) on every coin and note we use to make purchases and investments in our daily lives? Money evolved and has become anthropocentric, it now needs to reflect the planets value and have an ecological value. Fifty years ago a few of us humans witnessed the Earth our planet with the naked eye and saw its beauty, that our planet is a jewel in the blackness of space. A gem, an ecological treasure, the most valuable primary asset we all share. It’s time for the Banks to acknowledge it too.

I appreciate the prose and it’s an interesting idea, but your suggestion doesn’t solve what you seem to want to solve. The freedom to put arbitrary prices on something is an important one for many reasons. Trying to reduce money (and thereby price) to just ecological value is convoluted and restricted: What is the value of an idea? Even if you could find ways to reduce the value to ecological value, does that really reflect its real value? What about art? Is art value-less if there’s no message about ecology?

I would fully agree with you that there is value in indexing the long-term impacts of resource utilisation and modes of production that produce waste. A proper taxation scheme that takes the long-term ecological impact into account would be closer to a realistic solution. This isn’t something banks have to solve, this is something for policy makers and those of us who are in the position to elect their representatives.

@Merlijn Boogerd Hi, thanks for your thoughtful response. I guess I wasn’t very clear. All I was suggesting was that Central Banks simply redesign their currencies with the image of Earth signalling that the Bankers themselves acknowledge that their role is to protect the Banks new primary asset rather than gold, especially as most currencies like the US dollar came off the gold standard in 1971 and are now fiat currencies. Keep the dollar, euro, and all other currencies in their existing note and coin denominations but establish our common primary asset as the planet. There’s no need to re-establish prices on goods and services, the market will do that naturally. I mean, in the UK, when the queen will eventually dies all our notes and coins will slowly be replaced by new notes and coins with the image of the new king without changing the prices in the shops or crashing the economy. It’s just an idea.

I’m familiar with how utilities use GIS systems and they add great value to understand their assets. You expanded GIS to the earth as a whole and that is certainly an asset we need to manage better.

I’ve used ArcGIS for 22 years. It is and was a very powerful tool for understanding the world around us. What is totally glossed over is how much that software costs and how it’s licensing is now a huge cash grab. ESRI (Jack’s company) is a monopoly, they control the market, they set the prices. This seems more like an infomercial than a TED talk….

Lets start making the change with our military/pentagon and billionaires first. The average person is just along for the ride. So quit lying to us and yourself! What can the average person change? We’d all have to give up houses, live in caves and hunt and gather. No more materialistic items. Then change will happen. We know thats not happening any time soon so now what. Make a new vid and talk to the real polluters. Its not the average person!
