iPhone 12 extreme water test

The iPhone 12 is water resistant. But just how much water can it actually take? We dunked a brand-new iPhone 12 underwater in Lake Tahoe, California, to test out the IP68 rating and go even deeper than we’ve ever tested a phone before.

thanks for the review but I will keep my iPhone 12 on dry land. would not want to destroy my investment.

I would love to see a video where you take it to the claimed depth. After testing, take it home and see if the camera fogs and the phone goes into diagnostic mode. THEN try for deeper depths. You can’t truly say that the phone was fine at 6 meters without doing this. It was also still working at 20 meters. It only failed when you took it home. (Edited: spelling)

I would say all phones that have IP ratings, released this year. CongratsLexi, if you continue using this team to test phones i think ppl will come to watch videos with them, for official ratings on all phones in real world water scenarios.

You should have used two different phones bc now you don’t know if the phone bricked bc of the 6m dive or the 20m.

*As a Apple repair person – I state: IDIOTS DO NOT KNOW – DROPPING iPhone to like 5 inch puddle (for like 10 seconds) is NOT the same as shown here CAREFULLY submerge iPhone for 30 minutes.*
*And I do not even want to start here teaching physics like material bends when dropped – seals loose etc.*
And what she does NOT know – when I see fogged up FaceID sensors = DEAD FaceID – it is proven IT IS SO SENSITIVE even just touching it with finger = INSTANT KILL

It’s important to note that the water rating is applicable when considering a BRAND new phone. As you use your phone over the course of its life, all of the screws/glue/etc that hold your phone together will loosen or deteriorate over time, so don’t go thinking that your water rating will remain the same for the life of your phone.

  20. Hyun Woo Kim

    December 1, 2020 at 11:30 pm

They shouldn’t advertise waterproof function. If they don’t guarantee water leak in problem. Even if it work. Costumers are not stupid.

Or just save yourself even more money and don’t buy ANY Apple product ever… Except maybe an iPad, since there’s not really a suitable non-Apple tablet that’s completely up to par just yet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 is finally giving Apple a run for their money there though.

Heart stopping moment when u took it to 3 times the rated depth and tested it!!.. literally held my breath and prayed that the phone comes back in one piece!!..

Great to see that apple’s phones not just meet the IP68 rating parameters, but some phones even exceed them. The way the testing was conducted was extremely professional, objective with temperature and depth display actively noted and recorded. Such a professional setup and gives all info without missing anything.

Extremely informative though I would never do this kinda stuff not even erroneously or in my wildest dreams too!!.. super video and hope the bear just ambled off later without causing a fuss, be careful and take care.

No they aren’t… I washed my iPhone X under tap water, due to corona (which sounds kind of dumb) but water did get inside almost immediately. It still works after a few days of dying. So I don’t trust that promise which it is, a promise, it’s not even covered in warranty. In addition Apple just got sued in Italy for this false promise.

The issue is never immediate. Its always the day after when lens fogged up and water vapors short circuiting the circuits. Found it the hard way on IP11pro in a 1.3m pool. Don’t be fooled.

  43. Kk Al

    December 2, 2020 at 6:43 pm

Here’s the thing. If Apple finds ANY evidence of water submersion, Apple will deny this under warrantee. You now have a brick. How’s that for standing behind their product?

i dont understand just do the diagnostic test then

  53. Øystein

    December 3, 2020 at 1:55 pm

Correction: IP68 means protected from contact with harmful dust (6) and waterressistant (8) down to atleast 1,5 meters (or more) up to 30 minutes (or more). Manufactures can however add additional proofing and testing to reach greater numbers than the minimum requirements.
And all manufactures have a safety margin on their ratings. And maybe they did not even bother to test it higher than the rated numbers. So I don’t see the “mystery” here. I did expect everything that happened to happen. And the water is not “very very” cold.. Just “normal cold”. It’s well within normal temps so it will not have any impact on the test at all.
And I bet it works better when you see the moist on the inside of the camera lenses has gone away. It’s most likely just a little moist behind the volume buttons so the phone thinks they are pressed.

  54. Øystein

    December 3, 2020 at 2:11 pm

It was NOT “very very cold” water… Far within normal temps for a phone to handle in normal day use.

there’s no way to know if the phone would’ve worked after 6 minutes of underwater, after 72 hours.. should’ve used two separate phones for the test.

    December 3, 2020 at 9:29 pm

So in salt water its not salvage! Apple didn’t told us that! They only said its water proof to 6 meters for 30 minutes! I would win this in court!

  60. Crericper

    December 4, 2020 at 2:37 am

The result from 1st test isn’t saying much. You should’ve waited for a few days just like what you did for the 2nd test. It might also end up with similar situation with the 2nd test.

Also, for checking liquid damage, the best practice is to leave the phone dry for a few days and then tear down the phone to check the pink liquid damage sticker inside the phone. By just looking at the screen we can’t say much from it.

  61. Adam Langley

    December 4, 2020 at 9:05 am

It met Apple’s claim of IP68?? She needs to watch her own video. Without leaving the phone to settle after the 6m dive (as they did with the 20m dive) – she did not prove the ultimate death was due to the 6m or 20m dive. Ridiculously flimsy experiment.

Nice video, but sadly your conclusion is wrong. You don’t know if the diagnostic loop was caused by your first test (6 meters) or your second test (20 meters).

iPhone can’t be submerged in water, no matter apple marketing lies. If you do so screen may damage and it’s not covered by any warranty.

    December 8, 2020 at 12:28 am

You need to test them after a while to test how long the water seal lasts
