I Was Trapped in Chinese Mafia Crypto Slavery | Hacklab | WIRED
It began with a message in WIRED technology journalist Andy Greenberg’s inbox, sent from a lawless stretch of Laos bordering Myanmar and Thailand. A computer engineer from India, trapped far from home inside an isolated compound, forced to work long hours luring western victims into fake crypto investments. This is how he exposed the never-before-seen…

These scammers are insanely advanced. I’m a young, well educated, and a fairly skeptical man and I was nearly scammed myself. Someone spent weeks talking to me including video calls. I was skeptical of their intentions so I decided to offer to send them $1,000 usd to see if they would bite but they didn’t want it! They were “offended” in fact. I even started asking for very specific photos if they said they were at the gym or coffee shop and they came through each time. That really broke down my skepticism but soon after they kept talking about crypto more and more and then requested me go into my crypto app to do certain things. It sounds obvious now but in the moment it didn’t feel too out of place. I finally had enough but not because I thought they were trying to scam me I was just annoyed they became boring and crypto centered that’s when the scam became apparent. They went off on me and broke character. I then realized they used real women to do the video calls (always less than ten minutes) and always had photo proof of everything they said they were doing just in case. They really spend significant amounts of time wearing down your guard before they strike.

This isn’t really journalism or “news” — it’s years late. Scam compounds in Myanmar and Southeast Asia have been widely reported in Chinese media for a long time, and China has been running large-scale crackdowns and joint operations since at least 2023, repatriating thousands of victims and suspects. The issue was even mainstream enough to inspire the 2023 hit film No More Bets (孤注一掷), which sparked nationwide discussion. Presenting this now as a shocking revelation ignores years of coverage, enforcement, and public awareness in China.

@chibipandora
February 2, 2026 at 5:02 pm
💔It is insane they thought he might be scamming them. The point of a scam is you’re not getting what you think you are. There isn’t really money to be made or the woman isn’t real. This was a person who provided things of value to someone who knew what to do with it. It is heartbreaking that knowing he was real, they decided to include that detail in this story. I don’t know if it’s because they thought the story needed more stakes or to justify not paying the ransom, but if I were Red Bull, that would hurt to hear. I don’t think that should have been part of this story. 💔💔I don’t understand why this story used an reporter-centered narrative. I get prestige journalism does that now, but in this case, it feels extremely disrespectful to the source. I learned a lot more about how stressful the reporting was than I did about what was actually happening, and that’s an incredible disservice to everyone.

Jeesh, honestly – I’ve seen people setup go-fund me for their cats birthday – I’d totally chip in $5 to see this man rewarded at his attempt of taking down a massive annoyance that plagues each of us daily – It feels odd that channels like “Soft white under belly” can make someone like Rebecca (a homeless crack addict/model) – into a celebrity and send them hundreds of thousands of donations that he just spends on crack – while this dude might legit see meaningful change in his life with a little help.

What he has done is heroic. If there is any way for Wired to set up a GoFundMe I would certainly contribute. For obvious reasons, no other source of GoFundMe would be trustable. I really hope something can be done so the countries involved intervene to stop this.

Americans:
If you’re seeing the similarities in this and your entire system. Good.

This is the corporate model. This is capitalism. Rather than keep you in dorms, they allow you just enough freedom to not see your cage made of wage theft.

Never trust China when they say they are shutting down scam compounds and sending their leaders to jail.
It’s likely all PR.
China is making billions scamming victims all around the world. It’s part of their GDP.
They are now trying to make the world believe they are going after the scam leaders but it’s possible that all the scam operations are actually supported or even run by the CCP.

Let us think a bit all together, the red bull guy risked his life, he leaked all those information, Wired created a documentary that is making them a lot of money, they didn’t pay him a dime to save his life, and what bothers more in the whole story, is the lady, Erin West who was so stupidly confident to come up on line and say that the scammer is scamming them so we shouldn’t help him, and she didn’t regret, apologize or even be ashamed, shame on you Erin

Whoever this journalist is and who he was talking to has to have a much better time at understanding what’s at risk and what’s at stake telling him to take his time and to not make any unnecessary moves to further jeopardize him is him alone talking to you the journalist that could expose this whole thing puts him at risk and I don’t think the journalist was very cautious and careful about that and caring and realizing what what’s on the line not just him and his good headline and good Youtube video that he worked on he has to really truly realize that this person really wants to make a difference and all he’s doing is just being on the wrong side of it and on the wrong stance of it making him feel like he’s just his pawn when in reality he’s trying to be on the same team And he shows a lot about how this journalist conducted this video as well I’m all on the Person’s side of this and it to a point where a lot is on the line including this man’s life Please be more careful and thorough and understanding of what this man is going through just to make your video a reality an initiative
@johnmclane3890
February 8, 2026 at 8:09 pm
And just as quick as this journalist was able to get information out of that guy as easy as he would as it was to make this video as well and compile it all together of what the guy gave you Also puts other people in a better position to find the video just as easy as this video was made it’s as easy as them to find this video and make do of that person please be more careful thank you

ive seen these acounts before, most people with time into cripto have seen these and similar scams and just ignore them, but its the same problem with the OF honeypots online, they target with mostly ignorant and lonley people, that find “money and company” and theyre too into it to get out before they already get scam.
@KayLee-lw5iv
February 9, 2026 at 2:11 am
This is not an illegitimate business, if the only goal is profit. this is the natural conclusion of a system averse to competition or risk, any level of return for the employee can be reframed as a waste of resources, and any degree of pushback presented as a fit of jealousy or resistance to “progress”
Their shareholders aren’t losing sleep, that’s for sure.

So the operation is still running, all the bosses are still free, you’ve shown the world his face and location. Seems like this guy got a raw deal, he gave you an ungodly amount of inside information, yet nothing actually happened to the operation, you guys did nothing to help save him and he ended up saving himself. He basically got nothing out of this at all, I hope you’re giving him a % of the YT revenue on this one given that this is basically all him.
