I really like the things I like and really don’t like the things I don’t like. So for me, I at first despair whenever I’m forced to step outside of my comfort zone. But now, though I still despair a bit, I relish it because it’s so enriching to gain a new skill that unlocks a capability or to meet new people. I don’t think I would want to go to random locations sight unseen, but I’m a fan of following other people’s suggestions and trying to see life through their eyes.

Well, that was DIFFERENT!
At first, he probably left home from his parents- chose to do whatever he wanted. He thought that was freedom! I know I did that.
But then we tend to box ourselves up in our own prisons, habits- strange how the mind works. We can end up limiting ourselves and our own lives. Interesting how the brain works.
He’s a very intelligent man! We tend to need challenges in our lives- especially smart people do- or they get bored and unhappy.
veronica baker
March 16, 2021 at 12:01 pm
And then there’s the other side to that. If you let Google or apps decide for you- they could choose things they already know about you- from your phone app activities- according to your likes, patterns, activities your phone knows about you.
Or the possibly exists- that allowing some other entity to control you- could actually HAPPEN- like the government, or dictator or something.

Non-random algorithms do manipulate our behaviour. I personally hate that fact. I hate to be manipulated and ultimately seen as a product. Nowadays tech can really diminish our curiosity and criticism by comforting us all the time. Pretty convenient for a political system that’s ruled by few and subjugates the majority. Even minimal changes do impact a lot. We all know the butterfly effect. This individual showed that we should be aware and how to counteracting by using a random algorithm instead! Freedom is priceless!

I always thought of this. Maybe the modern world is set up today where you have way too many choices to feel in control of yourself. Maybe that’s why we felt life was better when we were kids and our parents took care of most things unrelated to what they wanted for us, like studying for school. Sure, maybe a stage into maturity is to make our decisions ourselves, but after a point, so many choices for what to wear today, what breakfast to eat, what mode of transportation, (and we’re still starting the day) can make us feel that we’ve done a lot for the day and feel tired and confused later (with a tinge of regret).

I listened to your story with interest all the way. But the conclusion was so disappointing Max. You live this life style consistently for 2 years, you do a ted talk about it, and you don’t even compare the two different life styles before and after. You are saying you felt more in control, why? What else was feeling different? Did you fulfill your purpose in this experiment, did those experiences change anything on how you perceive the world, yourself, your relationships with other people? From my perspective, I did not get any fulfilling answers to any of those questions, and the remaining opinion is that what a fun experience with no real content, feels like a waste of 11mins after all.
