A gas generator. Is cheaper. These things cost over $1,000

I have the ego version of this, I like it because I can put 2 batteries in it or four depending on what I need it for. There is one huge feature though that no one talks about. And, it’s a super super important one. Being able to plug in something like a sump pump, and then leaving the unit plugged into the wall so that it takes over providing power when you’re Utility power fails, That is a critical feature that most are not capable of. Secondly, another important feature is ensuring that the unit is capable of staying on even though the load drops to zero. For instance, plug in a freezer, it only needs power when it’s running but spends most of its time consuming zero energy, this is super bad when 30 minutes later the freezer goes to cool but the power supply shut itself off.

These are a nice idea. However, they are still more expensive than an equivalent generator. And, a 32oz can of TruFuel lasts me for most of the day. A $1000 for the generator plus $6 a day in fuel is a lot more convenient than power stations are at the moment. But, I do hope the technology keeps improving.

Good to see reviews that are from sites that are viewed more broadly by the pubic. Yes, these can be very useful during a power outage or even on a camping trip. I personally have one made by Anker as described in the video. I also have a higher powered unit. But mine is an Eco Delta 1300. There are many versions now available. Thanks for spreading the word. More people need to hear and see about these useful devices especially as our grid system is getting older and vulnerable.

I was obtuse about calling them generators too until I accepted that it’s a good search term for online shopping. People understand what a generator does. These power stations do generate a current from stored chemical energy (the battery) just like an ICE-powered generator.

Huge difference in battery chemistry between the two. Another way to charge is to put solar panels on your vehicle. I never have to worry about, it and used like this, it’s a “solar generator.”

With solar connected they definitely “generate” power, just saying.

    • Silver Cymbal

      December 18, 2021 at 7:34 pm

He wants to win the popularity contest by saying that. Imagine sunshine goes in and power comes out, that’s certainly not “generating” anything, are you crazy? 😀

  38. C H

    December 17, 2021 at 7:08 am

The Honda EU2000 requires fuel to “generate” power (more like a conversion). The Jackery requires fuel to “generate” power (also a conversion). Only difference is the Honda uses a highly refined byproduct of crude oil while the solar stations equipped with a solar charge controller and PV panel use sunlight (electromagnetic radiation). It should be pointed out that in addition to “passing through” the power to connected devices the Jackery will also store excess energy collected from photo voltaics in a lithium ion battery.

    • Silver Cymbal

      December 18, 2021 at 7:31 pm

The people that can’t see the argument of calling them generators believe gas generators are fuel-less “true” generators. They don’t see the fact both require something else to “generate” electricity. You will never convince them, believe me I tried.

In 2020 I bought the Jackery 1000 and two solar panels for emergency power in California due wildfires and planned power outages. I also use it for car camping. The “sol-gen” works great! BTW California’s new law bans the sale of small gas powered generators, string trimmers and leaf blowers. The handwriting is on the wall as far as buying gas powered devices in our state.

    • T C

      December 18, 2021 at 7:44 am

Thanks for the info on this new law. The downside of the law is it will only be effective ” by January 2024, or as soon as regulators determine is “feasible,” whichever date is later.” We all know how bureaucracy and lobbying industry work.

  50. T C

    December 18, 2021 at 8:47 am

The problem with these power stations is that they are unreasonably expensive. Use the Jackery Explorer 1500 from this video as an example, it costs $1600 on Amazon as of Dec 18, 2021. That’s more than $1 per W-H. Given this unit price, a 2022 Nissan Leaf Plus with 62 KW-H battery would cost more than $62K just the battery alone. We are not even talking about anything else.

  51. Asif Kidwai

    December 18, 2021 at 2:23 pm

Wouldn’t you want to have both solar panels and one gas generator to recharge these power stations?
What if it’s raining or overcast today and the power grid is down.
Those solar panels might not produce enough energy before nightfall to top off your power stations. Just run the gas generator for a few hours and connect 2 or 3 power stations. Turn off the gas generator until the next rainy day.
