A game-changer in prosthetics has been introduced to the world, and for the first time, amputees are regaining sensation through an electrical signal from their prosthetic arm. Max Ortiz-Catalan, a professor of bionics, explains the process of implanting these mind-controlled bionic arms through direct skeletal attachment. The researcher takes us through every step of this groundbreaking advancement in bionic medicine, from surgically implanting electrodes to fitting the prosthesis and training for everyday use.

Amazing! I had always wondered that, since the brain controls muscles with electric signals, and electronic devices also use electric signals, why prosthetics only ever seemed to be controlled with sensors on the skin the detect muscle contractions. It seemed really obvious to tap these neural signals to control the them via implants. It’s great to know it can, and is now, being done!

  71. @JackFoxtrotEDM

    December 18, 2023 at 3:40 pm

Here’s the thing with “mind-controlled” limbs, though. Limbs are not mind-controlled. When you move your limbs, you don’t think about it, you just simply “do” it. I’m not sure as to how it works, how your limbs can be simply controlled just on a whim without thinking about it. But I often wonder if it’s possible to use the same system with bionic limbs, to have a bionic limb feel and control exactly like a regular limb.

It looks so incredibly prone to breakage though, the titanium screw is strong, but it looks like it could easily snap off the bone, it needs something to give it more stability, like how out muscles wrap around our skeleton, the point the prosthesis connects to the bone needs the same reinforcement

Is this something affordable? If its a $100,000 item then its kind of pointless for 95% of amps…$10,000 makes it available to 50% of amputees.
Perhaps leaving the important parts unpatented could increase the odds

Thw only sad thing is that this project was related to the increased war in Ucraine… A lot of technological advantcements were done in war, greate peojects, useful ones, but its a terrible context. Humans have to understand that we dont need a emergency to change things.

For example, the planet is basically on fire, and things will start to changw just now. We needed this yearz ago.

At least we have extemely talented and smart people like this guy to create technology to people in need rather than creating more luxury things for rich people that dont improve on anything (like a lot of companies).

  118. @nunya_bizniz

I came up with this idea while watching Violent Evergarden (not the first, but i did come up with it on my own) and I bet the creators did too.
I had no idea it had any really scientific processing; it sounded possible in my head, to a point I kind of came obsessed with prosthetics.
Man, if he didn’t introduce this, I would’ve. Bravo to science fr. The human mind is truly a world in itself.

Dude!!!!! We’re getting closer and closer to the sci-fi ideas of cyborgs!!!!! Dude!!!!! Cyborgs will someday be science FACT, and I can tell just by this video, that that day is MUCH closer than us regular citizens/people even realize!!!! Geez, I wonder if it WILL become science fact before I die, and I’m still relatively young. I’m 37, getting closer to middle age(groan *eye roll*). Kinda scary to me, to be honest, the idea of cyborg people living among us and not thinking of it out of the ordinary, kinda scares the beejesus outta me. Dunno what else to say about that.

Finally prosthetics are not just fancy carbon fiber wooden hands with a sleeve, but actual cyber implants. A long way to go to perfecting the range of motion, precision, battery life etc, but the tech is there, finally. These people are legit the first cyborgs, through and through. Interfacing directly with the nerves instead of muscles will be a huge milestone and it won’t matter where the amputation was made, and we could “cure” all sorts of nerve damage, including paralysis by just bypassing the damaged section. After that, interfacing with nerves that send complex signals like optic and auditory could finally cure blindness and deafness and we will be on our way to a cyber dystopia where the government and corporations can see directly through our eyes 😂

I think brain data will be dumped digitally in my lifetime. But I don’t think they’ll be able to translate the data into anything. And no one would ever be willing to attempt to have their brain overridden by the data either. That of course would be unethical. But that will be the first step to the Matrix. Dumping the data of the human brain into a hard drive and then later being able to decode it many years later in an interface much like the Matrix. Imagine the bioengineering when having a smartphone in your pocket is a waste of space. The human eye can be used to capture photos and video captured to a micro sd you plug into your body. Or when you can think to call someone and you can hear them without the need to put a phone to your ear or a blutooth device. It is all integrated into the human body. When a crime happens and every human in the vicinity is a human body camera.

Will Brainoware technology solve this problem?

  208. @KAKA-qh5ql

    December 24, 2023 at 10:31 am

Charging the prosthetic limb every once in a while for half an hour or an hour is tiring. I think that if nuclear batteries or thorium batteries were used, the problem of the battery running out and charging the prosthetic limb would be solved, or the human body’s electricity would be connected to the prosthetic limb, or the human heat would be converted into electricity using a thermoelectric cooler device.

  209. @KAKA-qh5ql

    December 24, 2023 at 10:34 am

I believe that if a special table was made comparing the human limb and the prosthetic limb, it would be easier for scientists to develop prosthetic limbs and make them more efficient. The more properties and details the table contains, the better.
