How do you even define yourself a Computer Science student if you don’t know what an Overflow is? That’s awkward.

The first kid was surprisingly aware of what hacking is. When I was 9 my parents thought I was autistic. But that doesn’t really compare because they are still not sure.

LOL I was so happy that he mentioned the Light Commands research. Especially given how it could be paired with a laser microphone for instance to grab any input required to fully optimize the voice inputs.

    July 20, 2020 at 11:51 pm

It’s really interesting how systems can be manipulated like your example of moving the whole pinball machine instead of working the buttons. Why would a hacker play by the rules when there’s an easier way?
It makes me think of how I might not understand someone else’s actions if I don’t know their true goal.

    Hacker explaining summary

def Hacking – using a machine in a non-intended way

    *Child*
Hacking is a way to learn how ‘malicious’ hackers are hacking and stealing money (hackers update protection ‘new code’ + do bug fixes)
Change a way a system works not manipulate
Can start hacking at age of 9-10

    *Teenager*
    code.org – building/rewire a game
Hacking is similar to code- rewiring and controlling inputs (even temperature) 4:35 to control outputs (better memory if cold) of the computer
Time to hack – seconds to years

    *Cyber Security student*
    Information and Network Security
sometimes sales accounts/credit cards hacked , Hackers look at weak links
Networks brokene e..g. WiFi via Bluetooth
8:05 Attacks Buffer Overflows – memory allocation limited (8:45 Segmentation Fault) … payload executed
solution – Penetration test at deli scale ‘deep vulnerability’ – 6:30
9:45 Solution to BUffer Overflows – protection mechanisms in software e.g. smaller computers etc
CS and security/Encryption (Interdisciplinary) – China and Iran (censorship unlike US ) – Ethics (protecting/breaking software, limitations of software/tecchnology, hiding new info for advantage)

    *Grad student*

It’s interesting to watch tech professionals talk about hacks. They’re open and eager to talk about concepts published by others, but they slow down and smirk when they brush near things they recently discovered.

I think Colin and the nine year old girl were the only ones interesting fo listen to. I think due to the expertise of the expert so it was two contemporaries. The youngster was just curious and asked really insightful questions and excellent comments which showed she listened. The teenager really rambled on about flappy bird and maybe it was just poor editing on Wired’s part as when I was 8 or so I made my first BASIC program without internet. The college student I really don’t think he really understood anything computer computer science and not sure how global politics has to do with what he even was talking about. Dunno again if it was just poor editing but the hacker guy I just saw in an earlier clip reviewing movies. Guess the YT algorithm tied them up together.

I like these concepts but which they focused more on social engineering as that’s really still the easiest way. Humans want to help and if you have the confidence (I don’t) to call someone up and say there’s malware we need to reset your account many will unfortunately still fall for it.

Though it is incredible the acoustics of a capacitor can be helpful as I seen a video of a crisps bag and a high speed camera able to determine what’s being typed. Similar concept.

I think it’s interesting that, having watched a lot of these “5 levels of difficulty” videos, some topics like this one have to be frequently annotated to give laymen a better chance at following while others were easy to follow along regardless.
It kinda speaks to how much bogus you have to keep up with to be up-to-date in the techworld – either because it’s developing that rapidly, is too broad of a subject, has dozens and dozens of buzzwords or primarily talks in terms of concepts and abstractions rather than actual, palpable things.
The truth is probably a combination of all of them and stuff I’ve not even considered…

I agree with some of these comments. He wasn’t wearing a balaclava in an internet cafe and installing Gentoo on his Thinkpad T420. He can’t be legit. I’m also disappointed that he didn’t go into the history of the word hacking and the change in perception over time due to technological advancements while going off on a tangent about hacking putty vs hacking PuTTY. In all seriousness, the lock analogy is always nice, and I think he did well explaining that permission and the law are the primary differentiators. The locksmiths and engineering consultants would be the ethical hackers while the burglars and escapists would be bad actors. Game modding/hacking can get a bit dicey. If it is just a purely aesthetic mod with no ulterior function or it’s a functional mod for a commercial game that you own a copy of, go nuts. If it’s an online game where your modifications are either changing server-side information through client manipulation (like exploiting bugs/injecting resources) or modifying the client such that it gives an unfair advantage (like overlays that highlight enemies), that would be unethical. I could go on for a long time about each of the rest, but this is already bordering on way too long.

The closest things to hacking that i’ve pretty much ever done was:

1.Guessing the Parental Controls password on the TV in 2 tries (it was my dad’s birth year :P)

    2. A year ago I took my dad’s phone when he wasn’t looking, typed his password (which was ALSO his birthday, as all parent’s passwords are), and going to settings to manually disable his Screen Time settings so I can download apps and use my phone for longer than 2 hours without having to “Ask Parent”

There’s nothing more random then ethics, that is totally up to the current cultural values and norms, or zeitgeist if you will. Even most laws will adhere to this, because a cultural norm can be that strong, enforcement would want to protect the norm.
