    I worked on a program that used SGIs. I had to code in BX to make 3D models on it. The hardware was so obsolete that they use to say a stick of RAM costs over $10,000. I don’t know if that was true because I didn’t buy it, but that’s what the bosses would say.

    20:00 The webcam “hack” is actually very feasible. They didn’t show it, but for her to have made this happen, she’d just have to build it to use the getUserMedia API in JS (over SSL) and then, importantly, have the user click an “allow” dialog for it to occur. Or, the hack: find a vulnerability (probably a 0day) that bypasses this dialog. No need to install software that might not already be on the computer, just hope they’re running a vulnerable browser (or just dumb and clicked “allow” to see cute doggies, *much* more likely).

    One little nitpick here. For the movie Firewall and the ipod. Depending on the generation of the iPod it could have totally revealed itself as just a normal drive to whatever host system it connected to. At that point they could have just stored images and ocr’d that.

    Source: I used to own an early generation ipod that did just that and there are (or were) instructions by Apple on how to force it into drive mode in case the unit was having issues.

    He’s wrong about the microwave. CD/DVDs have a reflective layer and they only take a second or two to start burning dramatically in a crazy alligator-skin type pattern. I don’t recommend you try it yourself because of the fumes, just look up videos of people doing it.

    “your ex-boyfriend is … in the computers?” Well. I have a PhD in Computer Science and I worked during the last 20 years for a few high-tech companies doing ‘computer’ activities related to compilation and HPC (high performance computing). Even now, I really don’t know what to say when I am asked about my job. Part of my activity is to write software but I am not really a developer or a software developer. I sometime refer to myself as a software engineer but I do not have the official diploma. Anyways, I have a hard time to explain what I am doing to most people so for them I am probably the big guy in the computers.

    The part about ffmpeg and the RGB (red, green,blue) images is not really realistic because videos are almost always using the YUV encoding (or a variant) where the first channel Y represents the luminosity (so a grayscale image) and the 2 other channels represent the color. Separating the 3 RGB channels with ffmpeg is possible but that would typically be done on the final images just before they are displayed on screen. That seems to be a useless step when trying to fix a corrupted video stream. Extracting the Y channel to get a grayscale image could be useful.

    Back then companies and governments were dumb enough to punish hackers or imprison them, waste of talent.

    Now days you can offer your hacking services for a premium on specific websites, and these placed are used by giant tech companies like Google, FB, Twitter that pays to find exploits on their websites. Example: hackerone is used by every giant tech company and pays out in the tens of thousands if you are good

    Or another example, look up “google vrp” they will pay you to find exploits, and it’s a good way to get a job at google 😉

    There are a few things in that video which are opinion presented as fact but overall pretty good. OCR can stand for what he said but most people agree that the O stands for Optical and most cars with enough autonomous features to hack like that do have electronic parking brakes, the bigger issue with that scene is that no where near that many models of car have enough of those autonomous features to be able to hack them like that yet, it doesn’t matter how much you pwn the computers in it if there’s no motor connected to the steering wheel to actually do the turning.

    “Most UNIX systems are consoles or terminals”

    I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as , is in fact, GNU/, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus . is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX

    Minor detail in the Snowden clip:
    He used the short form one time, and the long form another time for the tar command (cjvf, and then –extract –file). The vast majority of people only use the short form (xf) instead of –extract –file

    Sound does not easily propagate between air and liquids. This is why you can go underwater and you will not hear your radio that is at a reasonable sound level as soon as water enters your ears even at surface level. Water on this planet is not easily compressible normal voice levels would do jack to the surface of your coffee cup.

    Not a problem with emergency brakes (most may or may not use them) but it depends on the type of vehicle how hard it would be to control. For example, a telsa that can self drive could just be given a simple destination and left to take care of itself, The others would need constant control amd may not have the sensors to tell the new “drivers” what was going on around it

    for(i=1;i>0;i++) {
    printf (“YOU DIDN’T SAY THE MAGIC WORD”);
    }
    Could even use an if statement to track how many access attempts were made and only run that routine if they tried x number of times

    That “image to mp3” part is… Kind of embarassing to point out, but many MP3 players are just USB storage devices. Once you connect them to the computer through USB, you can put non-mp3 files on them. I used my ipod as a storage/removable drive, because it had a lot of free space. So you can put any kind of file on it, NOT using itunes (or other management software) but simply by opening it as a drive in your Windows Explorer.

    He’s wrong about the E-Brake in cars. Something that I hate, but has been happening more and more is the addition of electronic E-Brakes in new vehicles. It’s just a little button or switch, that then tells the brake module (and ECU) to engage the emergency/parking brake. The computer then sends the necessary signal to a motor that engages the rear e-brake. So if you can alter the signal to the computer, you could in theory engage/disengage the e-brake without activating the physical switch.

    Obviously with old school cable or hydraulic lever action e-brakes you wouldn’t be able to do that. You also can’t pull sick slides with the new electronic E-Brakes…which is a horrible development for new/young male drivers as it is an important part of the mating ritual.

    FWIW, too many cars (X>0) have electronic parking/emergency brakes now. I do not know if they are tied into the CAN bus though. Modern cars are dangerous, the proliferation of IoT devices is sickening. Hack my car and hold it ransom for Doge? Nah, I’ll go back to the 1990s tech, thanks.

    5:40 OCR is Optical Character Recognition not Object Character Recognition. Its intended use was to convert text in images to textual information. Images, in this case, was the “optical” part of the name. Early on it was intended to convert handwriting in images however that proved too difficult and the typed text in images was what took off because it was less error-prone.

    21:10 a virus is software that can spread itself onto other systems – regardless of a user’s interaction. So the description he gave is incorrect. A worm is simply malware that accesses resources on a computer and then uses the information found on that computer to access other systems. Again, user interaction is irrelevant to this form of malware as well. For a worm – think that it burrows… it does not actually have to run anything on the computer that it attacks. Its closest analog is a spider (e.g. a web crawler) that most people may be familiar with. What he is really thinking of is a trojan. That’s the name given to malware that tricks a user into running it or inadvertently making the malware runnable. This is the only name given to malware where “user interaction” is used with its classification.

      @Camp RocketSound So you’re telling me that through a camera, they can determine the density of the liquid, the composition of the cup, the surface the cup is on, the language spoken, and other factors which can affect how the ripples move? That would be like taking soil samples of Mars through the Hubble. This isn’t a speaker where all the factoring components are known, but even then, it would be extremely difficult to determine what is coming out of a speaker just by how the cone vibrates.

    Objection on the liquid surface to sound translation.
    While doable in theory, it would require incredible framerate and resolution. So for that technology, I do believe we are hardware limited and I seriously doubt whatever camera they were using is capable of it. In fact, the data rate on such a camera would be very difficult to transmit over any normal network.

    Many cars do have a electronic e brake. But most cars can drive through an ebrake as it is. That said unless its a car with auto park or auto pilot which granted there are a few, ford has had auto parking for a few years on somewhat budget cars and we all know about tesla and some mercedes that can steer, im not sure that you could actually steer most cars. Many cars still have hydraulic power steering vs electric and power steering is mostly meant to assist the wheel. You might need to get down into the firmware on the steering rack itself to try to steer with the rack and the driver should be able to over power it if they responded fast enough. You may be able to activate brakes through an abs module through some solenoid testing procedure but generally the driver is still very much mechanically connected to the brakes and steering and most cars would have no wireless access to the can network (though i have heard thst some cars can be exploited throught the tpms sensors). Like its hypothetically possible if you have the right cross section of cars and you have physical access before hand and development time with each model of car. But generally speaking your cars arent at much risk while you’re driving them and most crooks with the smarts to get into your cars computer are more interested in unlocking your doors on a dark street.
