Sword fighting expert Christina Traister examines a variety of scenes from movies and television featuring sword fighting and applies her expert analysis. Could Darth Maul really hold off two attackers like in ‘The Phantom Menace’? Was Arya’s sword training in ‘Game of Thrones’ accurate? Did the Black Knight from ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ really only sustain a mere flesh wound?

Christina Traister is an Associate Professor of Acting and Stage Combat at the University of Michigan

I think fencers know terms like Epee and Saber and to everyone else; it’s a foil. Still, would have thought Fight Master Gender Studies here would have known 🙂

So glad someone finally explained the Monty Pyhton scene. Who would have known that it isn’t realistic to keep wanting to fight with just one leg left or no limbs at all. So by now I’m almost certain that the scene was meant as a joke … almost. :p

Why, in the Universe, do they have a Light Sabre to fight like humans on Earth (in a Galaxy far, far away, in a time, long, long ago), when they have all those fancy, devastating ‘Pew-Pew-Pew!” laser(?) weapons in the first place…?

Your pronunciation of glissade is also wrong. It’s a /s/ consonant in the middle, not a /z/. As for incortada, it isn’t a French word at all. I think it’s Italian.

I saw Highlander as a kid and thought it was so cool, but later I learned whatever really experienced people do they like to keep it as simple as possible. So in that sense the Holy Grail duel is the most realistic

22:00 You can totally grab a blade without cutting yourself. Especially a rapier is not specially designed for cutting. There are historical fencing techniques the specificly grab the blade like for fighting in armor.

  73. Scott Rougeau

    August 5, 2020 at 9:35 pm

She does well at breaking down scenes and definitely knows a lot, but I’d have liked to see more critiques on the unrealistic techniques throughout all the videos. A few HEMA youtubers who do practice sword fighting have reviewed some of the clips in this video and had some different opinions about the bad choices that the fighters make. These clips are rife with hollywood shenanigans that would put you at a disadvantage in a real life scenario,. things like spinning around, making cuts without a hope of connecting, deflecting blows over and over and never following up with counter cuts. Choosing non-lethal attacks when a potential fatal blow is starring at them in the face. (like james bond one where he hits james in the back with the sabers guard instead of stabbing his back?)

“shields are a big piece of metal!”

No. No they weren’t. They were wood. Especially at that size. The only metal shields were some small bucklers about the size of a dinner plate.

“It makes sense towards the end that they ditch their shields”

NO! NO! GOD NO! That NEVER makes sense! FFS somebody stop this woman!

  86. NotMeButAnother

    August 7, 2020 at 3:02 pm

Her explanations are all good, but there’s very little actual “technique critique” in there. I’m not expecting her to be all technical all the time, but basic things such as not turning your back on an opponent, not attacking when you’re too far away to hit anything or keeping your shield in front of you instead of swinging it behind your back where it can’t protect you while you’re attacking (all rules Hollywood frequently breaks) I think would be worth mentioning here.

  87. Ingavar

    August 7, 2020 at 3:38 pm

As a fencing coach for over 10 years, the fencing blades are “epees” not “foils” in the James Bond bit. The gauntlet of a fencing glove is often closed with velcro and there is a small opening for the body cord (which connects to the epee for scoring) to exit. Blades do occasionally find their way into that hole and draw blood. Bruising, small cuts, and “road rash” are common injuries in sport fencing.

One time when I was just started out, I accidentally thrusted my epee all the way up someone’s arm through the hole in their gauntlet. “Halt”(meaning “stop”) was called immediately and the ref and I checked on my opponent to make sure he was OK. He was fine; we kept fencing after he closed his gauntlet a little tighter. It happens. Fencing is still statistically one of the safest sports.

  110. Gallowglass

    August 9, 2020 at 6:12 pm

Eh, I prefer the reviews of people like Matt Easton, Metatron, Shadiversity, and Skallagrim. They look at those fights much more realisticaly. Though I could critique each fight that she showed my biggest one was the Rob Roy fight because grabbing the blade is absolutely realistic. Skallagrim proved this with his half sword / murder stroke video. Tom Riddle’s character was trying to pull the blade away but Liam Neeson just had too strong of a grip. Also that duel is my favorite sword fight in any movie or TV show. Second to Adorea’s Longsword Duel on youtube.

Tim Roth’s character was trying to pull the blade away but Liam Neeson just had too strong of a grip. Also that duel is my favorite sword fight in any movie or TV show. Second to Adorea’s Longsword Duel on youtube.

About the three way fight with Maul: When Obi Wan got behind him, he could have ended that fight real quick, by aiming his saber at any of the places Maul had left vulnerable. Namely his head, or his entire torso( in the back.) Maul was distracted by Qui Gon, so Obi Wan should have taken that chance.

    I had 2 personal thoughts.

As far as blade (13:35), if I remember correctly, the material is some super natural material that would in theory be resistant to some of the blade damage. They are also super human (vampires) with super human strength/speed making the sparks more achievable(assuming the blades are glazing off each other and not cutting into each other).

As far as Star wars, I was never a fan of the fight with Maul. While I appreciate the skill Maul’s actor has, the strategy was so sub par IMO for people, who in this universe, are powerful fighters.

People, including the GoT show runners, seem to think that The Mountain should be slower than Martell because he’s larger, but that dude’s a medieval athlete. Find me someone with more effective cardio than a guy who can lug around in a full suit of armor for the total length of a medieval melee. Martell might beat him in a sprint, but when it comes to things like the speed with which you swing a weapon, muscle = speed. The Mountain was supposed to be a freak of nature with no physical equal, not one of those video game midbosses that lumbers like an elephant and turns like a battleship.

23:45 those are epees and not foils. The gloves also have a hole that a wire passes through to connect to the weapon to register the hits and the “sleeve” is separated and closed with velcro (to make easier to put on, take off). Blade tips can go through this.

13:00 because in reality, those three actors are occupying a space about the size of your living room. it doesn’t occur to the actors to be running for the same reason you’d feel silly sprinting to your bathroom. that’s why people didn’t like this movie. it’s not just cgi. it’s a sense of “fakeness” that pervades the film as a result of cgi imposed limitations on the flesh and blood performers.

Blade’s sword is made of titanium, so it would hold up better than Frost’s steel sword. Not saying there wouldn’t be nicks in it, but Blade’s sword would destroy a regular steel sword before too much damage was inflicted. Check out what titanium can really do on Demolition Ranch. He compares level III plates to a chunk of titanium, and it’s pretty nifty.

    August 18, 2020 at 8:20 am

I do wish, in the Troy scene she would have talked about how unrealistic it would be to jab the point of your sword straight into the opponents shield like they do. That is a good way to break the point, or at the very least dull and or bend it. They are using Bronze swords so the tip would definitely get bent at the very least hitting into the shield like that. Also, they spend so much of the fight with their shields either at their side or behind them where it will do no good as it can block nothing when it is not between you and your opponents weapon. I find it very irksome when they bother to give the actors shields and then they spend the entire fight with the shield off to the side or holding it behind them.

  171. spamfilter32

    August 18, 2020 at 8:30 am

In the Star Wars clip, they cut a lot out, but in a 2 v 1 situation, the 2 want to attack in a line with one in front and one in back, while the 1 wants to keep the 2 in front in a triangle, and in the choreography of the entire fight, we see them do just that with the Jedi constantly maneuvering to put one of them behind Darth Maul, and Darth Maul countering by maneuvering so that he puts them both back in front of him. That choreography was absolutely brilliant. probably one of the best choreographed fight scenes in all of Star Wars.

  203. Tyler Rogers

    August 23, 2020 at 6:49 pm

How does someone get this job? Does she have any martial arts training? She doesn’t go very in depth on technique. I’ve been doing karate for 15 years and a lot of fight choreography disappoints me. It would be cool to have some control over a big Hollywood fight scene.

There’s almost always things that these fight experts say that I kind of disagree with. Star Wars criticism is usually based on what we know regular humans can do, but Jedi and Sith fight on another level thanks to the Force. She says they should attack at the same time, and the next clip is Maul blocking Obi-Wan while kicking Qui-Gon to interrupt his attack. Then she questions Obi-Wan walking up to Maul instead of being more aggressive, but he’s the apprentice and less experienced. It isn’t like Maul wouldn’t know how to defend a running attack. He’s just doing what you do in a fight, sensing your opponent and looking for an opening.

Other fighting experts have talked about the Rob Roy scene. You can definitely hold onto a blade with your hands. Tim Roth’s character wasn’t just waiting, but if we want to be logical, he could have dropped the sword when he saw Rob Roy standing up, about to cut him in half.

some of these fights look ok, but there’s not a single one where it looks like a proper fight :/
for example: spinning around is a free backstab for the opponent.
more realistic fights are less exciting for the audience in the conclusion, which means she just hasn’t watched a proper stage fight before

just watch these right here and you see what i mean:

    August 26, 2020 at 5:58 am

Why she constantly asking questions where there are none?
    example:
    “…when fighters start too close?”
“Shields are awesome cuz they aren’t just defensive weapons?”
“..and essentially turn yourself into a battering ram?”

This video is a joke. Could not fully watch. The “expert” is entertaining but far to generic showing her ignorance on any one subject.

How does one achieve the title “Fight Master”? Like do you go to a renaissance festival, or is it a legit title?

I was a fencer in college. In the Bond scene, I have seen nearly that exact injury when a foil accidentally got between the sleeve and the glove. But, it was not on purpose as it was in the movie. I don’t think you could pull it off on purpose. He continued the match and even with his foil wrist bleeding, he won against someone who was really a better fencer than himself.

40 seconds, and already we can see You are not a good fighter… Small dose of alcohol gives You better reaction and less fear !!!
Yes if You drink more than one glass of wine or pint of beer or one shot vodka, it will fully reverse that effect, but when the dose is right, it makes You a better killer

(that’s why in some countries driving with some alcohol alowed, and some don’t allow it completely, some think that it’s better if You are don’t distracted by daily issues and relaxed with some beer, and others think that it gives You less concern about others and yourself, BUT when You are fighting to the death, there is no question of safety)
