Mad respect for Wired not cutting Brennan and his leftist ways, including the comment on religious panic that is made up to control their votes.

My only issue with the change to Counterspell is the fact that whatever you counterspell gets refunded. Oh, the boss tried to Power Word Kill and you managed to counterspell it? Guess what’s happening on their next turn. Guess.

“the dice tell the story” I’m just being reminded of the anti-climactic end of CR3

“May all your hits be Crits” please no. I just ran an encounter where my level 8 party fought a hasted CR 10 Demon. Four player Crits later, the Demon didn’t even get a second turn.

For character alignment, it can be a good exercise to add a third dimension: toxic <--> paragon

The only difference between a Cleric and a Warlock is the size of the organization. Clerics are corporate drones, Warlocks are independent contractors on retainer.

I’m glad Brennan gets a spotlight here.
At 27:41 he talks about prep and as someone who hates prep because it feels like homework, I’ve relied on improv for most my DMing career and when you have a Prep GOD like Matt Mercer who is the shinning relic of what a DM is supposed to be, it’s really nice to have people like Brennan who are like “I’ve got a notecard with 3 bullet points on it and I can run a whole 4 session story arc of just those alone

My favorite character build was a Chronurgist who could only do one of two things a day, in rotating order: Age up based on 2 D20s and have any and all knowledge possible at that age. Then the next day: Age down based on 2 D20s and lose all that knowledge. I die at 150 or 0 years old. Sometimes the group is carrying around a baby that is 1000x useless than it was a day before and others a senile ancient wizard close to death, but extremely wise.

Our friend who does all of our DMing never tells us no. Often if we’re probing for information that isn’t there we have to roll an insight check, and if we fail we end up on a wild goose chase. But he makes that an adventure of its own.

On prep: Brennan’s prep is great, so is Matt, and the common point they both have? They prepped. There are going to be people that tell you that you don’t need to prep for D&D. Those people are liars or just doesn’t really care all that much.
Prep, too, comes in different forms. Knowing where the players are going is a prep. Knowing your player’s stats, like what spells they prepared or their passive perception is prep. Tying the immediate future along with what you remember of your players is prep. All those things are good to do, even if you don’t exactly know what type of challenges are ahead and is gonna just flip open the book and find a creature with appropriate CR when things come up. Nevertheless: Prep. It will never hurt.

    March 6, 2025 at 6:46 pm

The d4 is also the least satisfying dice to roll. At least using regular methods. it doesn’t bounce around or have moments of inscrutability before the reveal. it just sort of plops when you roll with out much flair becoming the number it will be quite quickly.

after much debate and testing our table determined, that where dexterity and space allow, flicking the d4 like a coin is the most effective way to improve the satisfaction of the tiny pyramid chance cube and add some dramatic flair to its use.

The Immovable Rod can in fact be…moveabled…
There’s a very high strength DC to move it, which a moving massive vehicle could easily overcome with its momentum or engine power if you rule the wall/hull of the vehicle can withstand. You could also rule that as the ship presses against the rod, the smushing wood or whatever presses into the end cap of the rod, hitting the button to disengage the immovableness.

“Greatest magic of all” answer is incorrect. The correct answer is “a Wish”. Because a wish is flexible and could include chronomancy — OR ANYTHING ELSE.
Someone who plays D&D should know this.

I know this is going to come as a shock to a lot of people but if you allow the immovable rod in your world it is a mistake because the moment you activated you are going to be very surprised when everything starts to smash into You as the world literally zooms past you because while you holding the rod aren’t moving that doesn’t mean that the planet beneath you stops moving

I feel letting the druid talk in wildshape should be a performance check on their first time saying anything as each animal. It would basically just be them taking a few seconds to learn how to use a new shape of tongue muscle.

  81. @SereneSpaceTravels

    March 7, 2025 at 6:00 pm

I bet a mimick could go for much longer than a week between feeding and be fine. It’s an ambush predator who only expends significant energy in devouring its meal. And given how many calories are in an adventurer that would last for a long long time.

  82. @cazcow

    March 7, 2025 at 6:07 pm

I’ve seen some comments referencing the needless political needling in this video, and it’s worth reinforcing that DnD is for everyone. You don’t have to be a leftist in love with drag queens or a conservative Christian questing to banish all the demons. You could just be a regular person who loves slinging dice.

With the Nat20 on skill checks, while I agree that you should never call for a roll when it wouldn’t change anything, however it shouldn’t be an automatic success, it should “just” be the best possible outcome, which isn’t necessarily succeeding with exactly what the player attempted to do

I hate to be a stickler and he did make a good point about the greatest magic of all time, specifically the thing about love saving you. However, friendship is actually not a bad answer. As if you have great powers of friendship you can just befriend someone who knows Chronomancy and the result is effectively the same.

Not only is the tpk bad when not expected but just an out of nowhere death. A great friend of mine of DMing for us and was actually doing pretty good. We were able to convince a friend to come play with us. (He had never played dnd.) 20 minutes in, and he walked over a spike trap. No warning, no saving throws, no perception check, just dead on impact… “Welcome to Dnd,”🤷‍♂️

My interpretation of Mimics is the extreme of feast and famine hunters. They spend long periods of time disguised and motionless before eating an adventurer or two. maybe they’re able to also catch a rat or two by chance, but they’d be evolved to survive months of famine before getting a large meal.

One of my small peeves with D&D is the word “chaotic” in reference to alignments. The word conjures up images of wild unpredictability, and I don’t think that was actually ever the intention. I think that was just the adjective they settled on to give a one word description of the opposite of lawful — meaning bound to following the rules. A better word might be “free-spirited” or “unconventional”. I also think this is where people get the idea that chaotic neutral means chaotic stupid. My approach to the chaotic neutral alignment is that it’s someone who tends to care a whole lot more about the freedom to decide things for themselves over anything else.

I think the difference between warlocks and clerics is that clerics serve a deity that represent certain ideals or a code of ethics, rather than solely its own personal interests (although I realize that this could still be described as the deity’s own personal interests), whereas a powerful being granting another creature magical powers typically only do so when its in alignment of that being’s interests, and that being’s alone. A deity’s ideals at least still have the potential of casting a wider net that can positively/negatively affect (depending on the alignment of the deity in question) a larger number of sentient creatures. But I agree that most if it is probably just a question of perspective and semantics.

lol Magical incel logic….having friends cannot have magical properties because everyone else in the world (assuming npcs and stuff) dies without those backstories and elements. Like if every-time one of your players made a character, there was also another character npc with the same abilities and backstory….that really wouldn’t be much fun. DnD is about the player’s character and their desired backstory affecting and being affected by circumstances in the game world?….if the DM decides it’s fair to do and not game breaking why not have a backstory involve some of that magical ’emotimancy’ stuff in it? Happiness and Sadness, Passion and heck even apathy could be weaponized by one strong enough in magic and channeling those emotions purely. There are already gods associated with some aspects of these emotions….could a monk not devote themselves to purity in some aspect of these emotions and then gain some magical affinity while fighting to empower themselves further than normal?

The biggest advice I can have as a player to a DM is to know your audience, surround yourself with friends whose play styles are the same as you run your campaign. My first TTRPG experience was on a Shadowrun campaign and the Runner forgot to plan a session and instead just had us sit down and “plan a heist.” My buddy and I who were far more fly by the seat of our pants types ignored this and went to a bar to pick fights where we were told “Everyone in here is so strong that they will kill you if you try.” I was turned off TTRPG’s for many years until I found a great DM in a DnD campaign who was more than happy to let my Barbarian Dragonborne scream “ADVANTAGE!” as my war cry charging into battle.

I’d argue that, instead of good and evil being the Y-axis, it should be self-serving vs altruistic. Good and evil depend on who’s asking, and most of the time the “evil” guys don’t think they are evil, but they might be self-serving and just not care. But you could also have a chaotic altruistic person who believes the ends justify the means and eventually becomes a villain (or not).

25:33 I once ran a campaign set in a mall and had a player who decided to be an edgy older hot topic worker. The players spouse played the mall cop who had a crush on her character. She refused to interact with her spouse or the campaign. Her character hears shuffling in the vents and sees the other pcs following it to see where it ends up? Her character is just gonna finish her shift and not worry about it. She never participated in fights if we could even get her to where the fight was happening and she was actively disinterested in the mystery I was introducing. We asked several times if she was having fun and she always said yes but she was a NIGHTMARE for my story. Every character she ever made in the 3 years we ran campaigns with her either refused to participate in the story or were chaotic evil who never went with the story and started fights with the people giving us quests. Needless to say we don’t play with her anymore

For people on a budget, dice can make an excellent fill in for characters and creatures.

Also my current campaign has 4 people playing, 3 pcs and 1 dm

4:11 at the end of the day the books and the dice are optional too, if you know most of the rules, you can get monster statblocks online and solve doubts with the internet, roll dice there too (though physical dice are still cooler).

You really just need to lock your friends in the basement.

For nat 20s on skill checks that technically still can’t be passed, i try to offer an alternate bonus. You fail to pitpocket the keys but don’t get caught, and you managed to grab a note… This way, there is some reward and opens up nice possibilities and new mini quest lines or loot.

Goddamnit Brennan. I didnt come here to have my love for Harry Potter ruined. On a side note, the best spell is OBVIOUSLY Prismatic Spray. Rolling to see what happens? And one of them is roll two dice for both effects? YES PLEASE. A close second is baleful polymorph for obvious reasons.

27:32 it wasn’t just DnD, the same people were drumming up moral panics about rock, and later rap, video games, the movie Mulan ….

The evangelicals are always coming up with new stupid things to get mad about. If they ever let their persecution complex falter, they might actually realize that the reason why people hate them is because they’re assholes
