Happy May the 4th! Of course we don’t know if the final lightsaber product we see in the video works exactly as described in the patent, but it’s fun to look at clues like this to see how Disney got here. Tell us what you think about this real lightsaber!

I feel like it could be done with a very light fabric tube and fan forcing it in and then out with blowing and suction inflating and deflating it. Then a bright led illuminating it from in the unit. Kind like those tall blow ups you see at car dealerships. Kinda…..

I can’t believe you guys don’t know yet how disney made that lightsaber. I will try to explain to you guys what they did. First of all it’s not real. The mechanisms is actually quit common. Remember the old light sabers where you had to sling the saber and the long glowing pole popped out? Well this is very similar. What’s actually happening is there is a thin layer of stretchy latex that’s wrapped around the light itself. Little motors push the pole out in segments and it also pushes itself through this white latex. It’s able to stretch out and make the height transition move smoothly. It’s more to it then that but that’s the basic set up

  64. abmong

Without seeing the whole video I’m guessing it’s some kind of translucent silicon gel/rubber that can be squeezed into the handle and wrapped around an inner shaft that can be extended like an old radio antenna. The light shining through masks any wrinkles on the gel skin.

I feel like it’s just a semi rigid rubber balloon that is naturally under vacuum and tucked away inside the handle. When powered on, an air pump quickly inflates it, pushing it out of the handle.

The balloon would be made of a semi transparent plastic to refract the light and give it a glow.

But we will see once it’s officially unveiled
