I saw the problem right from the beginning, never have and never will use social media. Read a book, gain knowledge. Facebook is brainwashing to the masses. Satan looks for weak minds to control. Social media needs to be removed permanently. Government needs to close these evil people down.

We live in a Republic, not a Democracy. What does that even mean anyway, to “reclaim our public square”? Does that mean the right people have lost the pulpit? To be heard validated and respected is a two way street. There can be no compromise when right off the bat we are labeled as domestic terrorists.

My assessment: Let’s use our counter terrorism playbook to stop Nationalism. That’s a dog that just won’t hunt.

Yeah well I’ll begin to believe that when she mentions hate groups on the left like antifa, msm, and BLM. They have already killed 30 people and counting in the riots.

It’s not only Facebook anymore. It’s ALL “social” media platforms. Including the one were using right now…

Putting aside political issues momentarily, a greater threat on the horizon is that they’re breaking truth. If you think things are bad now, just imagine a rouge AGI gaining access to the big data of these social media platforms. I can’t even begin to imagine the resulting complete and utter chaos lol

  7. Remy Lebeau

    September 24, 2020 at 9:29 pm

I didn’t hear one word about hate groups on the left, she just wants FB to censor the right wing even more, and silence those who expose the lies of the mainstream.
I don’t want your moderation and appeal to a supposed middle ground because I have no reason to find common ground with communists and domestic enemies of America.
She should be looking for a peaceful resolution by getting leftists to start real secessionist movements, but the fact that the left have not and will not do so speaks volumes about their true goal in destroying America rather then just leaving it and us alone.

The TRUTH? Don’t worry about the TRUTH, our kings the and those they corrupt will decide what is truth and if they, our KINGS disagree, THEY will call it ‘hate speech’ and delete it from the information that the America people need to vote with LEAD BALLOTS for those THEY keep in the dark shadow of the KINGS that now rule ‘america’ and keeps America their colony.
“THE REVOLUTION” has already happened, and you don’t even KNOW IT. The ‘right’, ‘center’, ‘left’, the ‘up’, the ‘down’, the ‘in’, the ‘out’, ALL BELONG TO THE TRAITORS and ‘our’ corrupted ‘politicians’, loyal only to their bank accounts and those that keep America their colony. What America NEEDS is a counter REVOLUTION that WE the American people will VOTE FOR, but not with worthless paper ballots, but with REAL LEAD BALLOTS that even their lobby cannot CORRUPT. Just look at the current crop of CRAP that is now running for the Presidency of America…dONALD dUCK their current JACKASS that promised to DRAIN THE SWAMP has instead BECAME THE SWAMP, surrounding himself with the PARASITES that will tell you right to your face…THEY ARE “GOD” CHOSEN PEOPLE and will ALWAYS BE LOYAL to that LAND that OUR “GOD” Gave ONLY TO ‘god’s’ chosen people, even though they are from the Khazar region of the Near EAST and NEVER LIVED in the Middle East, but because they call themselves ‘god’s’ chosen people, they have a RIGHT to kill people that never lived anywhere else but IN THE MIDDLE EAST. That THEY have a RIGHT to corrupt ‘our’ politicians’ that will sell their souls to SATAN as long as the price was correct. dONALD dUCK the TRAITOR that gives away other peoples LAND that he doesn’t own. Through corruption and deception the people that ‘god’ chose, remain the KINGS OF America, not doing what is best for America, but doing what is best for THEIR “GOD” (SATAN) and THEMSELVES. Then ya got THE TRAITOR, jOE bIDEN, that too will tell you right to your face that he’s king and ya don’t have to be ‘god’s chosen, and I add, TO BE INSANE, and bURNIE sANDERS, a ‘modified communist’ that wants to promise everyone everything for NOTHING, forgetting to mention that the ONLY FREE LUNCH IS IN A TRAP and that the middle-class tax-paying Americans will be paying for everything bURNIE want’s to ‘give away for ‘FREE’.
Ya think these INSANE ‘religious’ wars are for FREE? Who owns the ‘fed banking system’? If I told you, those at YouTUBE will call this comment, ‘HATE SPEECH’ and delete it, as they already do to anyone that has told the TRUTH about the INSANE that invented the insane clown that chose ONLY THEM, gave land ONLY TO THEM, has a ‘covenant’ ONLY WITH THEM, but has corrupted ‘our’ gov’t to send OUR SOLDiers to KILl, DIE, and become ‘wounded warriors for israel’, waste OUR TAX dollars, while THEY, ‘god’s’ chosen PAY NOTHING WITH THEIR LIVES or THEIR MONEY. ASK YOURSELVES, WHO ARE REALLY THE INSANE???
Stop being not only insane but stupid too. Obey the USA Constitution and VOTE with your LEAD BALLOTS, for those we, the American people cannot get RID OF ANY OTHER WAY. ‘VOTING’ is a joke played on the American people by the AIPAC lobby and the zionist controlled ‘news media’ that makes sure that no matter who the American people ‘choose to be the next empty-headed puppet of the zionist state in the Middle East, the zionists will decide who the American people will choose FROM. dONALD ‘the JACKASS of the zionist’ dUCK or jOE ‘the zionist’ bIDEN. Ya ‘real change’.
You may vote as many times as lead ballots you have. VOTE NOW and VOTE OFTEN, it’s the ONLY answer to a gov’t that has become so DANGEROUS to the American people and the rest of the world, the ‘american’ colony of ‘the god’s chosen people’, once known as America.
THE POINT, the people that invented a ‘god’ that chose ONLY THEM and gave land ONLY TO THEM have already won, but it’s still not too late to make THEM extinct using LEAD BALLOTS.

Nicholas Hallett, 23 of Tucson Arizona, the majority of registered voters in my state are Independents yet we have to switch to either rep or dem to vote for president which can be a form of disenfranchisement or voter suppression, the two party candidates are both terrible options just like it was in 2016. What can we do except a nonviolent overthrow somehow someway

I thought the USA was a republic not a democracy. When people are voting for a new president, their votes actually don’t matter (see 2016). What matter is those few elected officials in every state that have been voting (mainly) for a democrat or a republican since 1850s. So I’d say your “democracy” has been broken for almost two centuries. Since that time your so called free press has been in hands of either two parties. Only 7.8 million voters knew in 2016 that they COULD vote for someone else apart from the big two. But it’s better than in 2012 when only 2.2 million voters didn’t vote for the big two. That’s the rise of social media and less censored information.

As a Finn I don’t comprehend how two-party system is democratic (or can even work properly). In our political field both democrats and republicans would be in right, possibly in the same party. Our current parlament that consists of 200 people includes eleven different parties. The government has representatives from six different parties.

You can get off facebook if you dont like it. If your kids are taken care of and given the attention and boundaries, they won’t be in a situation to be “vulnerable” “taregeted” “manipulated” by [[information ]]in the world. There had been and will always be noises in the world. You can scream about your annoyances or you can simply get out by putting your phone down/ remove the app/ cancel your account.
For the ones that likes to stay on either side of the extremes, they need debates and converse their point of views, not to be “removed” or defined ” destroyed”. The two extremes are basically two idealists with different definitions. Neither are wrong, just need to understand where the other side comes from too.
Create a new platform for people to converse is the solution. Not finger- pointing to fb just because it’s big.

The main problem is that these platform are becoming more and more personalized to the specific customer. They are not showing the generalized information but the personalized information which are in favor of personal interest. This will limited personal’s view which could manipulate their mind.

I see more promotion with the Streisand Effect than any type of benefit gained by censoring wrongthink. Censorship cannot fix polarization as it pushes some people out of the conversation. Those people stop listening, they become polarized.

Such a great message for the men in understanding.
But where the problem lies? What is the root cause of all these issues? It is definitely our policies or we can say that our constitution. Our Constitution defines laws for what has happened in the past and it is not ready for what will happen in the feature. There should be laws that should govern public interests and in general, the public benefit.

I wish there were more specific actions recommended. There’s a lot of space for constructive, Constitutionally permissible action between where we are now and the Ministry of Truth.

The only concrete proposal here is that social media companies should have to publish, or at least explain, their recommendation algorithm. Is that enough? Or is there more? It feels like there should be more.

Facebook & all key social media platforms are in online biz & answerable to major shareholders & big investors. Their biz are based on consumer goods advertising model in order to attract more & more advertisers who wanted only measurable reach & engagement. These big advertisers are responsible to report quantifiable ads performance in order to keep their own jobs & justify more ads budget to develop their brands. What are urgently needed now are effective parental controls on children exposing to / using these social media & most of all new legislations / relevant laws on social media platforms to protect all consumers and at the same time create a regulated equal-level playing ground for online corporations.

I love how passionatly you portray your ideas and ideals.
I am not an expert in this field. However, i have observed lots of people close to me and myself too.
I can be manipulated a bit on things i do not know well yet. But i will NEVER be engaged in things such as heatrage, revenge, orgnanised crime. No matter what i hear, see, or experience.
I not defending FAKEBOOK here, but what my example proves is that i know what is right and wrong for me. And i speak and act accordingly.
Even if i hoped so, at least for my extended family, i cannot say they have good morals and know what ethic is about.
I do not have a solution for this issues you are talking about. But if i were to start from somewhere, i would start from going into households and educate people there, especially the youngsters.
In the long run, they would turn the back on things such as FAKEBOOK without me turning the lights on many other shows as poisonous as FAKEBOOK.
The real enemy are all those broken souls that spent the best of their time on such platform getting poisoned by their own anger, envy, revenge. FAKEBOOK and the likes are AMPLIFIERS of our EVIL intent.

yeah no, fb, and yt, and google, aren’t the “public square” to begin with, they are for-profit entertainment companies, period — and it’s not the lawmakers who need to demand of media (new or old) to stop eating the public square for profiteering purposes, it’s we the public who need to demand of our lawmakers (new and old) to stop eating our public institutions for profiteering (unrestrained corporate bribery made legal in political donations and clear co-opting machinery) purposes, including establishment (old/legacy) media basically serving as the propaganda arm thereof

stop attributing utter lack of even correlative proof as being not just related but the actual cause of the problem — in other words, apply science, not quackery

don’t blame the lack of trust on “russia russia russia” and “zucky the punchingbag mark-berg” as scapegoats

own up, fix our democracy where it’s actually broken, in the hyper-capitalistic greed driving it at its core now

So its not about not using something you don’t like, but FORCING other people to not use something you don’t approve of. Step by step into fascism. Modern leftist politics is pure cancer.

Facebook isn’t the platform you need to be focusing on, here. But then, given your penchant for government control instead of grassroots change, it doesn’t seem like the people who thrive most on Twitter are the ones you want suppressed.

Does anyone else find it disturbing that a social media platform is recruiting CIA analysts for employment? Nothing against the speaker personally, I think her message was a good one (aside from wanting the government to control social media), but the CIA perfected the techniques that these platforms are using.

One solution would be to require Facebook to move to a subscription platform and to ban all advertising on the site. They could still make huge piles of money. But they would no longer have any financial incentive to keep people engaged and keep people riled up.

Social media isn’t the only “rabbit hole”. The news organizations are polarizing (and no one holds them accountable for disseminating misinformation – hello, Fox News). The two parties are both profiting off of polarizing people (and no one holds them accountable for lying, either). Social media companies are simply swept along (though they aren’t doing much, if anything to change things, either). It’d be VERY difficult for a social media companies to fix this, as they aren’t the only sources of it. Trying to fix the social media misinformation flood could VERY easily turn into China-esque censorship. That said, I detest Facebook for banning me because I abbreviate my name for safety (I have a unique name). So yeah, I haven’t used Facebook in many years, either.

In the western world, the ppl who grow up locally in their whole life, I’d say most of the ppl in a large proportion, were planted and bred with thoughts against China, using information which is generally out dated from the last century. Thanks to the unremitting efforts and contributions from politicians and capitalists. We gain initiative and solidarity from all of that.

  134. RAFIQUL HAQUE

    September 29, 2020 at 7:04 pm

Facebook must have a Dislike button. It also should delete unsocial elements asap. But unfortunately fb authority is not doing this. Moreover, zuckerberg is making money from the undemocratic and fascist political leaders all over the world. Facebook is also liable for lynching and genocide, one being Rohinga genocide in Myanmar. How to solve this problem? What is the future of democracy/ generations to come? Not clear.

  135. B H

    September 30, 2020 at 2:21 am

Ah, well… Perhaps the biggest challenge of all is the fact that people become bullies because they are sitting behind computer screens, and aren’t face to face with someone they disagree with. Finding yourself engaging in political, environmental, or any other form of social dialogue in which you become uncivil is demeaning, and often demoralizing. Focusing on the good, chiefly by recognizing what isn’t good, and eliminating it, will go farther to promote healthy commentary than anything else. Leave behind any social media platform that causes you to become what you don’t want to be.

Around five years ago, it struck me that I was losing the ability to engage with people who aren’t like-minded. The idea of discussing hot-button issues with my fellow Americans was starting to give me more heartburn than the times that I engaged with suspected extremists overseas. It was starting to leave me feeling more embittered and frustrated. And so just like that, I shifted my entire focus from global national security threats to trying to understand what was causing this push towards extreme polarization at home. As a former CIA officer and diplomat who spent years working on counterextremism issues, I started to fear that this was becoming a far greater threat to our democracy than any foreign adversary. And so I started digging in, and I started speaking out, which eventually led me to being hired at Facebook and ultimately brought me here today to continue warning you about how these platforms are manipulating and radicalizing so many of us and to talk about how to reclaim our public square. I was a foreign service officer in
