Breathing on Mars? NASA just made oxygen from thin air

First it was the Ingenuity helicopter taking flight, now NASA has created the first oxygen on Mars, generating enough to sustain a Martian astronaut for 10 minutes. It’s thanks to an instrument called MOXIE, and it could be a game changer for terraforming the red planet.

Thanks for watching! I have to say, I loved working on this video — it feels like so much attention was on the Perseverance landing and the Ingenuity flight, but MOXIE was such an amazing first on its own!

Also fun fact: I didn’t know what to put on the TV behind me so that’s an audiogram of the sounds of Perseverance driving on Mars, recorded by Percy itself. The more you know!

@Claire Reilly You should have played clips from “Total Recall”. Elon Musk has a simpler plan to create oxygen on Mars, sending Arnold Schwarzenegger to “Start the reactor. Free Mars!”

Mars has pretty “thick” air as it’s about 95% CO2 (funny title for the video though). Hope they’ll find a way to use algae to produce oxygen on Mars on mass scale – this seems a cheaper and sustainable way.

Until you find out what happened to Mars. They found out in the 60s, when they landed the Apollo missions on the moon and found spherules, zap pits, fission tracks, and glazed rocks. They later found more evidence on Mars, in the form of Martian “blueberries.” These are spherules they found on Mars, called blueberries by the false color in the images. While some Lunar and Martian spherules were likely formed by impacts and possible volcanic activity, others cannot be explained by impacts or volcanos. These can only be created by an extreme solar outburst. That’s what happened to Mars. It was baked by the sun, many times over thousands and thousands of years.

In this case wouldn’t it work well in automobiles to combat the global warming crisis. Put the gas industry out of business and save our own planet? If utilized like a rebreather for a diver and then converting the wasted co to fuel in the engine itself while emitting fresh o2 instead of dioxide? Duh

I just read more comments and most folk don’t seem to get that the Mars atmosphere is only 1% of earths most of this experiment was just compressing the “thin air” to get enough to work with. For the plant cycle to get going you need a heap more CO2 and water just to mention two ingredients. Amazing to see us fly a drone on another planet and I hope the images are not enhanced as all look so normal like a windswept beach under high thin cloud beautiful.

A video game I’ve played “Surving Mars” uses MOXIE units to produce oxygen. The conceptual units in this game are much larger, in theory is size something that would effect the output of a device like this? Curious if the current technology can simply be scaled or if it still needs advancements to produce a sustainable amount of oxygen.

We couldn’t find a more inhospitable planet than Mars to consider colonizing. Everything about it screams DEATH. Super thin atmosphere of CO2, extreme cold, high radiation levels, poor soil nutrition, etc. I laughed out loud when you suggested we will grow trees there to help produce O2. How? No water, too cold, inert soil, and too much radiation. At best, we will only be able to visit Mars for a few days at a time and likely live in a space habitat inside a crater or an orbiting space station. But we have to bring our own energy to create this O2 as solar panels will be grossly inefficient so far from the sun.

It’s a good advancement but humans will not become a multi-planetary civilization. The only humans who will be able to afford to go to Mars will be rich. No rich person wants to risk dying to go to another planet forever. They would much rather live lavish lives on earth. Mars has so many other bad effects. Mars dust is so fine that it can get into a spacesuit there is no atmosphere so UV rays will get you all sorts of cancers in no time. Terraforming Mars is impossible even if there’s water on Mars there isn’t enough to create that much steam, To create an atmosphere.

Are you familiar with the old warning about used car salesmen; that we should always wonder about what they’re NOT telling us? As impressive as your video is, it’s also a bit misleading. Nowhere in its contents do you or does anyone else address what is known as “breathable” oxygen. The air we breathe here on earth contains ONLY 21% oxygen. Some 78+% of it is a combination of other gases, such as nitrogen, argon, Co2 and methane. In other words, we need an oxygen “cocktail” in our lungs. That being said, why doesn’t anyone bother to explain how this marvelous Moxie plans on adding those elements to the extracted oxygen on the red planet? Skeptics everywhere will be demanding to know that!

  108. Walker Price

5 gms of oxygen! Wow! Can space hotels be far behind? Why do so many of you scifi fans refer to ‘humans’ and ‘human beings’ instead of ‘people’? Perhaps it is to differentiate between us and the klingons, who I suppose are a kind of people.

If you want to live in an inhospitable desert, we have plenty on earth. Why spend billions of dollars on such projects when there is so much poverty and so many problems on earth. India needs oxygen today, not spending a fortune to make a few grams on Mars.

Guys, this may shock you all but I swear what I write is facts! Mars already had life and has current life on the planet right now……there is a whole civilization under the ground of the planet . Aliens which are just “US” are already on our planet and have been here living with us with far advanced technology for many years. Also in fact, we humans have already reached full potential and repeated history billions of times already.. hope this doesn’t discourage anyone but what I tell u is truth.. the moon is hollow as well. Just thought I’d drop one more jewel in there for you guys🌟🤫😏
