0:33 Steam OS isn’t proprietary, right?!

The price will make or break this, especially in the current economy. There are plenty of people with disposable income to splurge on a high priced luxury item but if Asus really wants to create something out of this, they’re going to need to go after/cater to the average gamers. They’re a more cost conscious bunch.

If it’s close to 900-1,000 it’s a no go for me, I already have a steam deck and I’m planning on purchasing a gaming PC in like 6 months.

If its price is competitive to the steam deck I’ll think about, but I’m not sold yet.

The lack of trackpads is the deal breaker. I can’t go to a non trackpad device after the Deck.

    800$ + im sure

Full Hd on that size doesn’t really matter much no? seems just gonna drain the battery faster with such little benefit.

I think this will be pretty good! It won’t be affected by Proton’s incompatibility with certain titles, you can use PC Game Pass on it, as well as GOG games, and EA/Origin games. Pretty sweet!

      April 25, 2023 at 9:27 pm

I dual boot Windows on my Steam Deck and can do those things just fine.

It doesn’t have the 7840U 8 core chip like the aya neo next 2 has and aokzoe
This is a 6 core chip the Z1
Technically the 6800u is better since its 8 core chip

I’ll wait for the next gen

People are so uninformed when it comes to handhelds. $600 is not a lot for a handheld of this spec. In fact, it seems near impossible. Please temper your expectations.

The title should be steam deck vs rog ally this is not a review it’s just a comparison to the steam deck.. bad bad attempt at a review

40 wh battery not even an hour on windows and a freaking top huge black bar? so ugly

  16. nitin pahuja

    April 25, 2023 at 6:14 pm

Ultimately it comes down to software which makes such device perfect, steam with official launch of dual boot and handheld windows os 11 very soon will be unbeatable. The affordability and fact that steam has own app store where downloads for deck are going to be smaller by 10 times by fall this year. Cherry on top are touch pads

  17. Chris C

    April 25, 2023 at 6:20 pm

The Ally is a steam deck killer 👌 cant wait to get it. I think it will be competitively priced. Think all the people complaining are just gutted they have a steam deck now and cant afford to upgrade 🤣

  18. Alejandro Rubio

    April 25, 2023 at 6:40 pm

The steam deck screen is fine 800p for a handheld is perfect.

    April 25, 2023 at 7:24 pm

Software and controls support for games, price and battery life will be the three factors that determine if this device is a success. Any three of them is bad then its an absolute avoid.

Why did Asus make it look so cheap

  24. ken masters

    April 25, 2023 at 8:33 pm

I like the eGPU feature.. everything else meh. Steam deck only weighs 669grams. Don’t care for Windows for gaming. Without proton, don’t think it will work well.

I hope starfield and elder scrolls 6 can run smoothly and some triple AAA games!

Any game where you need to use the mouse pointer will suffer without a touchpad ,. That said , being able to play all my games would be huge

  31. Joe N

    April 26, 2023 at 11:01 am

You spent more time talking about the steam deck than the ally lol

  32. Khayman77

    April 26, 2023 at 12:24 pm

More competition the better. It should advance the handheld market and I hope it does well so long as it’s a good system. Linux sucks so a Windows version for handhelds is a good thing.

  33. Ayby17

    April 26, 2023 at 12:25 pm

Can’t wait to edit video’s on this thing.

  34. Shin Abomination

    April 26, 2023 at 1:37 pm

What will make or break this is the price and battery life, whats the point of buying this stronger system if it will just die extra faster. I see no reason to buy this asus rog ally over a steam deck, if there was a reason it would only be because it comes with Windows 11 or because you don’t own a steam deck already and want the Asus rog ally instead

  35. Dev'z Malandi

    April 26, 2023 at 1:41 pm

Il buy this if the price is cheaper than steamdeck paaak

  36. Irv Diaz

    April 26, 2023 at 1:52 pm

So will it play Xbox natively?

  37. Litzkrieg

    April 26, 2023 at 1:59 pm

Perfectly happy with the Steam Deck, but glad to see competition and progress in the market.

    • Super Guy

      April 26, 2023 at 3:05 pm

This isn’t competition. Unless Asus prices this at under 700 dollars, which I doubt.

    • Litzkrieg

      April 26, 2023 at 3:30 pm

@Super Guy  I think if they were smart, they’d price the base level with the lower end chip and smaller storage between 649-700. Several people have postulated that is possible. So in that case yes, but I don’t the Z1 extreme is in the same market, certainly, to your point.

I’m a 64gb Deck owner, so not part of that segment. No matter the other models prices though, it introduces new platforms into the handheld PC market against the smaller boutique brands like Ayaneo.

    • SquidBuck

      April 26, 2023 at 6:55 pm

      @Litzkrieg$699 just announced

    • Nathan Juan

      April 26, 2023 at 9:22 pm

@Super Guy Same price for a steam deck that is not available in other countries which needs shipment and tax for 64gb base steam deck at the same time it is more powerful and can play not just steam games but epic games, garena, xbox game pass, and other more non steam games because it is windows 11 heck it can even be your personal computer some games in steam that only works on windows and since steam OS is gonna be available in windows as well you can install steam OS as well if that is what you prefer has Dual fan for better cooling has a port to connect it to ASUS EGPU if you want more juice more storage with expandable storage and a 1080p screen.

  38. notKingForKings

    April 26, 2023 at 2:24 pm

Proprietary OS Steam OS what? Are YOU KIDDING ME. You can run any Linux distro on it and windows so that proprietary is no thing.

  39. K MDov

    April 26, 2023 at 2:44 pm

the fact that you keep trying to push steam deck down to sell this on a video says a lot

  40. Edicson m

    April 26, 2023 at 3:01 pm

Idk build quality seems like Steamdeck wins

  41. MoreToKnowShow

    April 26, 2023 at 3:15 pm

Since this thing is a WIN11 device, its going to be a winner in my book.

  42. Jason

    April 26, 2023 at 3:30 pm

1.) you don’t have to Hack anything to get windows 11 on a Steam deck. Plus you don’t have to erase Steam is to do it either. It’s actually pretty easy for anyone who has experience Windows OS.

2.) Steam deck screen is good. It’s better than the original Switch. I don’t own an OLED Swtich to compare. But screen on Deck is not as bad as tech reviewers make it out to be.

3.) make sure you get a fast SD card rated at A2. The A2 rating means it can run apps fastest. I originally tried to run Win11 from an old 128gb SD card that was in my Switch. It was not rated an A1 or A2 rating. Let’s just say it was slow as molasses. Even the fastest SD cards are not much faster than mechanical hard drives. So if you want the faster load times and response times. Get the biggest internal SSD you can afford. They are much faster than SD cards. This the reason why new smartphones are eliminating the SD card slot. They too slow.

Playing Wii games with the touch pad on the Steam Deck is such a nice bonus. So sad the Asus ROG Ally doesn’t have at least one touch pad.

  44. Raveryn

    April 26, 2023 at 4:20 pm

As far as I’m concerned the touch pads are a must.

  45. reemer911

    April 26, 2023 at 4:21 pm

all but that $1000 price tag also i have big hands the touch pads are also amazing on the steamdeck

  46. Derrick Klump

screen is small on the steam deck? what its the same size as the ally

  47. ProjectJ

Price is gonna be make or break with this.

  48. Anddddayyyy

Did you just refer to Linux as “valve’s proprietary operating system”? 😂😂😂

  49. TheRelbel1

    April 26, 2023 at 8:03 pm

So this downloads and plays games locally like the Steam Deck, you don’t have to stream everything?

Steam deck 2 OLED will announced after Asus Rog ally released. Think harder which one to get.

  56. Katame

    April 27, 2023 at 2:14 am

I love all these handhelds that are coming out. I just want Nintendo to make the next switch as powerful as at least a PS4 and I’ll buy it.

  57. Kenjionigod

    April 27, 2023 at 2:49 am

Price is really gonna be the make or break for this; but I’m very interested. If it’s price competitive, I’m definitely more interested in this than the Steam Deck personally

    • wakannnai1

      April 27, 2023 at 10:22 am

$699. Make your decision but to me it sounds pretty disruptive

    • Kenjionigod

      April 27, 2023 at 10:48 am

@wakannnai1 For which model? If that’s the most expensive model with the 512GB, that’s not bad at all.

    • Cyber Locc

      April 27, 2023 at 7:47 pm

@Kenjionigod that’s for the 512gb model, but do we know there is a cheaper one???

    • Kenjionigod

      April 27, 2023 at 7:52 pm

@Cyber Locc I don’t know how many different versions but I understand there’s supposed to be a one with smaller hard drive and less memory but not sure where that would land price wise

I just don’t get it, Why is it so hard to make them with a docking station so we can plug in peripherals or directly to an HDTV or PC monitor ?
it makes no sense to me.

Steam ecosystem, touch pads all make the steam deck feel like a handheld portable console, the grip/ ergonomics feel amazin. To me this windows thing lookes cramped up / stale and soulless.

Just a really dumb question, since this has a Windows 11 OS, can it run programs like Onenote, Excel and Publisher? Since it would be practical for me as I own a Bluetooth keyboard lol.
