Apple realized that the business model of the fitness industry where most customers pay for a membership and then never show up is something they could get on board with too.

      Update your iPad to 14.3
There should be a new fitness app where you’ll find it

But you can’t airplay to a smart tv without the Apple TV… that’s lame to force you to buy a dated Apple TV to use this on a bigger screen. Screen mirror blocks the video.

  9. Silvia de Abreu

    December 14, 2020 at 9:53 pm

Thank you for the review! Does it work over Airplay with an LG tv? And do you by any chance know if Apple plans to make it multiuser friendly? Cheers 🙂

We can’t get it in Germany… I understand it’s about localization but why doesn’t Apple allow me to book it with the disclaimer that it only will be in English. I consume most of my content online anyway in English!

    • Matt Stefely

      December 14, 2020 at 11:27 pm

It’s only for watch series 3 or newer, so if you’re on a 1 or 2 you won’t see it. Otherwise make sure to update both the watch and your phone/iPad

For those of you who plan to get a watch and cast the workout to your TV, you can’t. You need to BUY an Apple TV to watch the workouts on the big screen. I hope this helps someone. Again, airplay doesn’t work with Fitness+.

    December 15, 2020 at 10:24 am

Why wouldn’t you mention that every time you want to use fitness+ on a different device it needs to be unpaired from the previous device and paired to the new device? Apple support says it’s “expected to sign up on the device you’ll use it on to avoid this hassle.” Kinda dumb to market it as “use it on any device” like it’s a seamless experience.

It looks pretty good, and useful while we are all locked down. I wish it were included in the regular Apple One plan, though. The premier plan is a little bit steep if you are not planning to share the cost with friends.

    • Breanna L

      December 15, 2020 at 5:11 pm

You can. Just track as normal. The only thing having an Apple Watch does is you can see your stats on the screen as you work out instead of having to look down at your wrist. But you can use Apple fitness without an Apple Watch.

  39. Joey Varacalli

    December 15, 2020 at 3:52 pm

the trainers in these videos are ja ja ja ja jacked and the workouts they give you on this app won’t get you there. it would be awesome if they could give you some more options like a workout plan to follow for a month to build muscle or get better endurance. they should definitely add things for more advanced people to get stronger. all in all I have used It the last two days and they are fun especially if you have got bored with your workouts or maybe you stopped working out for the last couple of weeks and need something to get you back into it then this is great.

What’s the matter with the car I’m driving?
“Can’t you tell that it’s out of style?”
Should I get a set of white wall tires?
“Are you gonna cruise a miracle mile?
Nowadays you can’t be too sentimental
You best bet’s a true baby blue Continental”
Hot funk, cool punk, even if it’s old junk
It’s still rock and roll to me …
Don’t waste your money on a new set of speakers
You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers”
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It’s still rock and roll to me
What’s the matter with the crowd I’m seeing?
“Don’t you know that their out of touch?”
Should I try to be a straight ‘A’ student?
“If you are then you think too much
Don’t you know about the new fashion honey?
All you need are looks and a whole lotta money”
It’s the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It’s still rock and roll to me

    December 16, 2020 at 12:22 am

As a seasoned keep fit fanatic, I couldn’t be more disappointed, the Apple Watch might seem a nice integration but it wears thin quickly and is simply a gimmick, the workouts look good but the flow from workout to workout has no natural build. Like others I thought yea but after a while closing an exercise ring is simply BS marketing, a collection of workout videos that are the same again & again. It’s simply there to make you pay a subscription, your far better off making or paying for a proper personal workout plan that will build real personal goals from month to month, no fancy video or watch needed. You’ll do the same with free videos from YouTube!

    December 16, 2020 at 1:34 am

I just found out that I can’t use Apple Fitness without an Apple Watch. I have every other device, an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iMac, HomePod, HomePod mini, and MacBook Pro and I can’t use the fitness app without a watch. I have to spend 400+ more dollars to use the fitness app that I’m paying $30 a month bundled in my Apple one subscription.

    • richard koo

      December 16, 2020 at 5:46 am

You don’t need an Apple Watch. The app will look for the watch at the beginning of a workout. It lets you continue without the watch tho. Try it

    • Darius Nichols

      December 16, 2020 at 3:08 pm

@richard koo I called Apple. And they confirm that you cannot initiate the workouts on Apple TV without a watch. They say they are looking into fixing it.

    • richard koo

      December 16, 2020 at 3:15 pm

@Darius Nichols Interesting. I was able to do a workout on my iPad w/o using an Apple Watch. I guess they are treating Apple TV differently.

    • Darius Nichols

      December 16, 2020 at 3:19 pm

@richard koo this is what I’m trying to express. Once it’s initiated it’s fine. But you can’t start the program without a watch.

A few questions I have are: Does it work with any of the existing applications like Nike Run? Are you able to “compete” with friends through the Fitness +? Are there any “guided runs” where you have a coach in your ear motivating you the way Nike Run has?

  61. Renaud F

    December 16, 2020 at 2:49 pm

Can’t mirror to my tv. You can spend a lifetime of money on apple products. You can stream just about anything from apple to your tv. I already have a smart tv but no good for apple fitness +. Apple wants to be environmentally friendly. Cuts out headsets and charger blocks from iPhone purchases but requires you to buy a plastic box for apple fitness. No thanks.

  62. Techbasics

    December 16, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Pointless video seems like a marketing for apple, how is this helpful to people. Its only for people who are highly motivated, it won’t even track all workouts as its a watch on your wrist? Also if you are motivated enough you dont need paid videos

  63. fancy O

    December 16, 2020 at 9:32 pm

So in a nutshell we pay for a YouTube wannabe just because it syncs your watch to their platform? Hmmm ok, I’ll pass… there’s nothing worth paying for here.

    • Rubber Band Man Destruction

      December 18, 2020 at 12:38 am

Not to mention, Peloton also has a bike!

    • Omar Munoz

      December 18, 2020 at 3:34 am

Peloton is literally just for your legs with tons of cardio, if you want to build mass then you need to add strength training with weights to your routine. So speak for yourself it might be better for you but you need to be realistic and realize that not everybody can afford literally thousands on a bike

  73. Drrck11

    December 17, 2020 at 11:41 am

0:19 The key to unlock this whole thing is…your payment of the subscription fee. Just sayin’. 😉

  74. Jesse Greathouse

    December 17, 2020 at 3:34 pm

I don’t see why this needs to be a separate app with its own unique subscription. The watch is a device that’s marginally useful for working out, but it doesn’t need to be on the screen because it’s already on your wrist. This should just be a channel in Apple TV+, it doesn’t need to be a separate app and subscription. It just seems like a really cheap way to charge you extra money for what is basically just a video with superimposed watch information that’s already on your wrist. I don’t think its a bad product but I don’t see it being worth the subscription. It would be better as a value-add to an Apple TV+ subscription.

Isn’t Peloton better since they have a massive library of videos?
    Nike has a free app.
What about Beachbody on Demand and all their dozens of programs compared to the small selection of classes in Fitness+?
Free videos on YouTube? HASFit, Body Project, Heather Robertson, BullyJuice, Global Cycling Network.

If Fitness+ gave you guidance in creating a complete workout program it would be more attractive. It’s just a bunch of random videos. Too many of the classes are only 10 minutes long too.

Thank you for a thorough review. It’s been comical watching other tech channels review the new fitness feature by people who never workout nor have any idea of how to evaluate effective workouts. I think you nailed it at the end… it won’t replace your gym workout, but the drive will complement it. I’m excited to use yoga and core workouts to my already thorough cardio and weightlifting workouts.

You don’t need an apple watch at all basically. It’s more like beach on demand

      December 21, 2020 at 2:57 am

Many people are visual learners and need coaching, also wants to see their progress during workouts. The watch prerequisite is just to show the features the Apple watch has basically steps/movement count heart rate etc.

    • Rich Dollars

@BJ Rodriguez Again the watch is not a prerequisite .🤦🏻‍♂️ .

Hahaha so you need a $500 watch, a $180 apple tv,10 monthly subscription– won’t do you any good is you have no motivation, unfortunately you cant by that. So just like the people I see at the begin of the year 2 months tops and then a month before summer 95% for the people that will buy into this will be wasting there money(or just giving it to apple for free) like my co-worker, they all have an apple watch but couldn’t run a mile to save there lives. Start with the free video on YouTube and if you can be consistent for three month then you can buy into the Apple system or do you ???

    • LearnToStrafe

      December 22, 2020 at 12:36 am

You don’t even need the apple TV or spend that much on the watch. The $140 watch is just fine.

    December 21, 2020 at 3:40 pm

Originally I thought fitness + would be offered “free” if you already paid the Apple 1 plan ($14.99 single, $19.99 family) , but it looks like you only get it for the additional $10 ($29.99mo) plan . This is a bit different than what most articles were advertising past month .

  120. AmyX

    December 22, 2020 at 2:08 pm

I use Nike club or just youtube. Or go running. I don’t feel the need to pay $120/year for basically videos. I don’t have an Apple TV, so videos on my phone is meh.

    December 22, 2020 at 2:28 pm

Why don’t they give it to everyone worldwide – even if it is in english……….

  122. Duane

    December 23, 2020 at 12:03 am

There are some major problems with the Apple Fitness in its current iteration. First, the maximum workout is 30 minutes, 10 of which is eaten up by warming up or stretching. So in effect, the actual workout is at best 20 minutes in length. Also, the title of the workouts are not descriptive. So you have no idea what muscle groups are the focus of the workouts. Apple should take notes from Caroline Girvan’s channel on how Apple Fitness workouts should be set up.

Do you need the latest generation of Apple TV to be able use fitness plus with your TV?

  124. Timothy Collins

    December 23, 2020 at 1:22 pm

This seems like a really good idea… I wish Fitbit (AKA Google) would do something like this. I remember when the Xbox had the Kinect, Kinect fitness was really good and did something kinda close to this and I loved it.

It looks tempting to get, my question is, does it include Apple Music, or is it a total independent and stand alone service? I don’t want Apple Music on my devices. Thanks

    • Luigi A

      January 4, 2021 at 9:36 pm

it’s independent. You can use fitness+ even if you’re not signed up for apple music. They make the music from the workouts available in Apple Music for those interested, but that’s just an added bonus.

  133. Troy Diaz

    December 28, 2020 at 4:31 pm

Apple dropped the ball on this!!! You cannot screen mirror or AirPlay the fitness plus app from your phone to your tv. You MUST have the Apple TV box. Wth Apple!!!??? Useless unless you can see your iPhone why you workout across the room or you shell out more money to Apple for the box.

    • Vanessa Hand Orellana

      January 4, 2021 at 7:05 am

I agree!! This is my biggest complaint so far!

    • Luigi A

      January 4, 2021 at 10:10 pm

Not only that, but you must have one of the latest apple tv boxes (4th gen or 4k) running tvOS 14.3 so you can install the actual fitness app on there. AirPlay from iphone or ipad to an Apple TV box doesn’t work either.

    • Troy Diaz

      January 4, 2021 at 10:14 pm

      @Luigi A so ridiculous

  134. Sparrow Sings

    December 28, 2020 at 5:46 pm

DOES NOT WORK WITH AIRPLY… SO GOOD LUCK VIEWING A WORKOUT ON YOUR iPhone or iPad. YOU MUST HAVE AN APPLE TV DEVICE TO AIRPLY TO A BIG SCREEN. THE APPLE TV APP YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE DOES NOT HAVE FITNESS PLUS. TOTAL SCAM to get you to buy their surplus Apple TV devices. FVck you APPLE.

i’m thinking seriously about subscribe the fitness+ by paying 10bucks OR just use the NTC as free.
I spend 7days/1week at the house.. So i couldn’t choose one between them.
Apple’s one is worth of 10dollar than FREE NTC?

Impressive review, well done. As a journalist myself I know how difficult it can be to moderate a review while using the device. Which is even harder during an intense workout.

Am I the only one that sees a future where regular gyms have to shutdown leaving several vacant properties and Apple decides to start opening Apple gyms where multiple people can do group exercises and by tracking the heart rate, there would be competitiveness which could incentivise people to train harder together. Everybody would have apple watches and airpods

  152. Arkman

    January 5, 2021 at 8:14 pm

Fitness+ is a no go, it has no ability to mute music so your stuck with the terrible choices that are probably permanently baked into the workouts, so unless you wanna mute the whole thing you won’t be enjoying the music unless you just don’t care, and you must have the new version of Apple TV otherwise your gonna be watching it on a small screen, it is not compatible with airplay you will get sound but no video, there’s no way to mirror it so don’t bother, these 2 things alone will be a hard pass for many users, a shame and a huge missed opportunity.
