that case is stupid. I never use the case on my Bose qc45 unless Im traveling and the AirPods case doesn’t protect them at all
Roderick Shephard
December 10, 2020 at 10:14 pm
How much is the spatial awareness worth? No one else has it and the Dolby Atoms is a pretty cool trick. Its effective and sounds good on the pros Bose and Sony don’t have it.
How does it compare to the B&O. The B&O are $500 and also don’t do the spatial imaging.
The Bose, Sony and B&O were all on my short list. I will be very interested to see if the sound quality is comparable or better. If it is than Dolby Atmos puts Apple over the top. I have quite a few Apple products but I’m not sure the easy connectivity makes that much difference.
I’m still up in the air. Guess it doesn’t matter. No one is getting any until March anyway

You need to review these properly before saying they sound better on other Bluetooth headphones. Codecs matter when it comes to sound quality and I do not think theses support the best sounding like APTX or LDAC. There is a clear difference and would be willing to bet that they do not sound as good as the Sony’s for example using LDAC. At the end of the day these are too heavy and fall behind its peers in many important area. At 549 plus the cost of a cable for wired listening and an extra case you will need in real world use and these will cost 2 to 3 times the cost of its peers.

December 11, 2020 at 12:16 am
Seriously you can get an amazing pair of Sony or Bose for half the price. A year or so ago you have the tribit with no noise cancelations a good review. So Apple now is the king 👀😐😬👀 definitely looking like you got paid.

So is CNET just trying to be on Apple good grace?? Is the sound and NC $250 better. I seem to doubt it. Also the price tag of these headphone when you consider Apple care, adapter, cable and taxes is around $658. That just seem, even for an apple fan like me, is just too much.

I think the AirPod Max look amazing, love the Digital Crown instead of some sort of Touch Bar big plus for me plus I bet they sound incredible. Regarding the weight, that tells me that they are higher quality probably bigger for the speakers in the headphones and NOT cheap feeling plastic shell which is a plus in my book. I like the over the ear headphone until they get hot, so wonder how long I could wearing them before they become uncomfortably hot? The case seems a little half baked to me at this point doesn’t give a whole lot of protection in my book and one thing you failed to mention is that to put the AirPod Max to sleep you must use the case. Good review, thanks!
PD
December 11, 2020 at 10:49 pm
Apparently the headphones will automatically go to sleep after being unused for a while. Keep in mind that they might be able to add a “power-off” feature in the future. I would imagine that it can be done through a software update.

December 11, 2020 at 4:48 pm
I know ppl think they should be compared to audiophile grade cans because of the price, but that’s definitely not the case. These are lossy BT headphones. You’re not gonna connect these in balanced mode to a nice amp/dac combo. You’re just paying the Apple price premium, so definitely keep comparing them to Bose and Sony BT offerings. These will never sound as well as wired headphones you can connect to a nice source to play lossless music through
Kamikaze Hound
December 11, 2020 at 4:52 pm
This is a sham, unless you are an audiophile you shouldn’t even be spending over $300👀 for the price you can get a superior product
PD
December 11, 2020 at 10:45 pm
It’s not a sham, but you are right. This isn’t for people who don’t care about sound quality. For those people, go buy some Koss headphones for 50 dollars or something. That said, when you get the taste for high quality audio, you can’t really go back. Once you’ve tested a 144hz or 240hz monitor, you can’t really go back to 60hz.
Kamikaze Hound
December 11, 2020 at 11:07 pm
@PD well sham is overkill😂😂 I’m sure they do sound great just not enough for that price. I’d be curious to how they compare to the Sennheiser HD 650 open back which you can get for a $100 but close enough in price. I watched Marques review on them and he said the Sony headphones beat them in every way but maybe they should be compared to the more expensive Sennheiser HD 820 closed back which cost $2,400 to see if they are a more toned down version of that type of quality (I’m guessing he meant better in every way for the buck then for him to say that ig) which is why I’m curious to how they compare to stuff within that range

December 11, 2020 at 5:04 pm
Those who says this sound better than sony wx1000 series. Might be they are alien or have better ear than general population and last but not the least blind flowers of apple products and have no idea what is good sound be like.
PD
December 11, 2020 at 10:42 pm
The Bose QC35 already sound better than Sony xm4. I have both, but have been using the xm4 longer as the other broke. So beating Sony in sound quality should be a walk in the park for apple.

It’s weird because these aren’t priced for general consumption, nor are they priced to “audiophile” level headphones either. They’re like RIGHT in between both markets. I guess that’s what you call “the Apple fanboy price”.

“if it sits on the crown of your head it can get a little bit uncomfortable” this and the fact that he said that he kept making small adjustements because he couldn’t get them to be completely comfortable is the main thing I got from this video. People shouldn’t spend so much money when there’s alternatives for half the price and not be 100% comfy. If you put 20 hours of battery life on a pari of headphones then make them so you can wear them comfortably for at least half that time.

A couple things they missed on is having buttons only on one side…what about when you’re holding something or doing something with your right hand? Or what if you don’t have a right hand? Also that case looks like the ugliest purse. One amazing feature I think would be a huge hit for high end headphones is making them also heated ear muffs. @David, thanks for the informative tight review. You didn’t seem blown away with calls, something the AirPod Pros set a gold standard for and are still one of the best. Was this down to the fact you are only one day in on using them or do you have any concerns you will share?

They seem mostly very good for calls. Some background noise on streets, callers said, so didn’t totally muffle ambient noise but they said could hear my voice clearly. The wind noise reduction seemed more impressive. They are great indoors for calls. People cannot tell you are on headset. I mainly test for ambient noise reduction because that’s what people complain about the most.

@David Carnoy excellent thank you, yes people tend to get a bit fixated on ambient noise reduction on calls, I try not to make calls from street cafes where a full blown riot is in progress 🙄😉

They need a place to put the cable in the case. Do any over the air headphones have a charging case like the airpods?

How does it compared to the BeoPlay H95?

50% heavier than the Sony’s, and 33% less battery life. And almost twice the price. How can Apple get away with such a mediocre product and this price? People are nuts.

Many reviews say they sound better than the Sonys and at the very least match them in ANC

Augh. I just splashed out on Airpods Pro for their noise-cancelling feature. I bet these are as amazing but more comfortable (I work with audio all day, so having the earbuds is not ideal). I’ve tried I don’t know how many “noise cancelling” headsets at any price point over the years and nothing truly worked until I gave the Airpods a chance. I can even wear them in as essentially ear plugs and truly block out ambient noise. I wish I’d know this headset was coming and I would have gotten it instead.

Everyone is forgetting that the sound will be going through AirPlay if it can. So using them with something that is not compatible with airplay you are going to lose sound quality too. Not only the smart features.

Very nice video. $550 for headphones is just excessive. If you still have any debt at all other than a mortgage you definitely can’t afford these. If your house is paid off, you still may not be able to justify that price tag. Peace.

As good as they are and how they may sound 549 for headphones you could buy an good working iPhone for that and you will get more use out of the iPhone then the headphones so id say if they were 250- 300 what a deal by apple but for 549 im not wearing them out in public or even traveling with them if some where the price drops they might join my headphone style stack but right now I say keep on moving on .

Seriously I want to admit that the product is top but why why not jack port, no charger and no on/off button when we say we want to protect the environment

Headphones for stupid people that wants o pay just because it’s apple, don’t make me wrong, apple is great, I own many apple products but this is extremely overpriced and definitely not worth it, this is similar to the magic keyeboard for the iPad Pro, extremely expensive and you can find better options at half the price…

The anc on these are worse than my Sony wh1000xm3. It’s not good for higher pitched noises like fans. Maybe an update will fix that.

I don’t usually comment on videos, but you know there is a little pull tab on the package to open it without a knife…and they are NOT waterproof or sweat proof so be careful wearing them in the rain etc…

The Apple Airpods Max’s Weight, Power options, price point, durability, case, headphone jack( or lack there off), codex all fail in comparison to the competition XM4s

I don’t think Apple meant for the AirPods Max to be a regular everyday use product, but it was meant as a brand setting luxury item that is intentionally tioo expensive to create a desire for Apple brand. If you could afford everything Apple made, then there is no longing left for the brand. So Apple has to create a product that is highly desireable but so expensive that most people cannot get it and most people is left wanting more Apple brands. I think that is the psychology of the Airpods Max. It is definately an excellent product, but not worth what they are asking for it, and meant to be just out of reach so that you are left wanting something you cannot have.
