Airline captain Fatima Shafi examines scenes depicting airplanes from movies and television. Why do the pilot and copilot repeat what each other are saying in ‘Sully’? Does weight really affect an empty aircraft like in the Tom Cruise film ‘American Made’? Do pilots lie to passengers when they say they’ll only have to wait, “another 30 minutes”?

Fatima Shafi is a captain for a major US commercial airline and is also a former avionics engineering officer for the Pakistan Air Force.

For “Air Force One” there is a breakdown by a former fighter pilot, it’s really funny:

Okay, gonna call her on the engine thing in _Flight_ . The first officer shuts down the _right_ engine, so then panicking over having lost the _left_ engine is legitimate. Also, does she seriously not realise that passenger airlines have Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) to keep the electronics going just precisely for situations like this? I’d be more worried about the aircraft _being upside down_ , since AFAIK most airliners aren’t tested for that capability, nor most pilots trained to maintain control in that situation.

Thank you for paying so much attention to the video. But If you actually see entire scene in the movie you will see that The first officer pulls the fire handles on both engines and shuts both engines down, and then in the next scene complains that he has lost his engines. Also they don’t show the pilots turning the APU on so if the APU hasn’t been turned on which is not running all the time then it will get dark in the jet if all power is lost which they are showing.

    • Matthew Marden

      July 8, 2020 at 1:27 am

@Fatima Shafi We only get a close-up on the engine shutdown panel, so unless the main APU activation control is there, they could activate it off-screen. Plus, again, turning the plane upsdie down should also starve the engines of fuel anyway, if not causing the plane to break apart, or them to lose control.

      July 8, 2020 at 8:55 pm

@shinart if you watch the actual movie, you will find out that on both engines the fire handles were pulled and then both engines were shut down, it’s not one Or the other. Both engines had fire and both fire handles were pulled.

Domestics airline don’t? Have fuel dump?

    January 2020.

    • Fatima Shafi

      July 8, 2020 at 11:06 pm

The airplane you are mentioning in the you tube link you put in your comment that dumped fuel over Los Angeles, was a Boeing 777 aircraft bound for Shanghai which is a little over 13 hours of flight time. B-777 usually flies flights around 12 hours or longer. Not saying it cannot do shorter flights, but fuel dump is necessary on airplanes that carry so much fuel for far away destinations that if for some reason they have to land right after take off due to an emergency or abnormal they are with in the structural landing weight limit of the aircraft. Narrow body aircraft mostly used for domestic operation with a range of 4-6 hours typically are not equipped with a fuel dump capability because their fuel load is not as high as longer haul jets.

Everyone is complaining about the editing, where he keeps pausing her face. He probably did this because she was extremely verbal during those moments of pause. In other words, she watched a scene and then rattled off the entire explanation. He still could have just jumped back and forth between her and the video though. That’s what I would have done.
Just as a side note, she has A TON of base makeup on! My God man! It looks completely unnatural!

For the movie Flight, its based on a real crash. Alaska airlines 261 where the jack screw failed due to poor maintenance. (not enough oil or lubrication on the threads i believe) Look it up, as they also tried to fly inverted but crashed into the ocean. Unlike the movie, no one survived.

See this is one of those videos that I’m not gonna share my opinion on because I am aware that the person speaking has experience in their respective field to the point where they have mastered their craft, and that I, some dude with no formal education in aviation, shouldn’t use my crude understanding of engineering to disagree with her statements

  188. bogdan titus

    July 15, 2020 at 3:24 pm

As far as I know (please excuse me if I’m talkin shite) a commercial plane cannot fly upside down. It’s wings / aerofoil whatever aren’t designed to do that. You can’t barrel roll it (maybe with the exception of some smaller or cargo ones). On the other hand, it’s a movie, not a how-to-fly-an-airplane documentary. Fatima is so sweet the way she explains it without getting mad about it :))

When you declare “Mayday” you no longer request. You state. You state where you’re going and when you’re going to be there. You no longer wait for clearance…you already have it. I’ve heard WAAAAAY too many situations where after a declaration, the crew is still requesting things like altitude and heading. ATC should already be clearing traffic around them in anticipation of unexpected maneuvers.

I loved the neutral, factual representation Clint Eastwood gave to Sully. Sure, he exaggerated some things for dramatic effect, but all in all the movie has a very unexcited and almost documentary style to it.

    • alisoncircus

      July 22, 2020 at 9:37 pm

The reality was more than dramatic enough. First successful water landing of a plane that size, anywhere. First successful water landing of a plane even half-way close to that size, anywhere. The precision of the angle of impact was insane. Anyone who thinks that drama is expressed by shouting and random half-violent movement has a) watched too many moves AND b) never been in a serious real-life situation, ever.

  232. Mark Yehuda

    July 19, 2020 at 5:41 am

19:35 She mentions that Harrison Ford isn’t a pilot when he actually does have a pilot’s license for over 20 plus years!

    • Silas Kuemmerle

      July 19, 2020 at 6:47 am

To be fair, just because he has the license doesn’t make him a pilot. He seems to be able to land literally anywhere except for the runway.

6:03 to 6:08 clearly you see multiple birds and she is saying one bird can’t stop an engine but it’s multiple 10 to 12 pound birds going into it

    • Katie Balfour

      July 26, 2020 at 12:54 am

I think she was just clarifying that a plane /is/ capable of dealing with a certain amount of birds in a normal flight; it’s just that in this case, the number exceeded the limit.

What makes it even more wrong in the (Flight) scene 14:40 is that at the end of the movie they show the reson for the loss of control. The jackscrew in the tail section hade been worn clean with minimal thread rotations left. That lead to a total nosedive and should have crashed with no chans of recovery whatsoever.

  303. Andres Villarreal

    July 25, 2020 at 10:45 pm

You missed a detail: the gun became weightless but Liam Neeson was still firmly standing on the floor. And by the way, it seems that a lot of other things in the cabin decided not to levitate. Of course, the plane was generating positive, not negative, vertical forces on the gun, just as you said, so the whole scene is ridiculous.

  363. January Baby

    July 30, 2020 at 3:42 pm

I liked the video (as a huge aviation fan) but i feel like she could’ve added more to the analysis of each scene rather than just describing what the scene was and how it was accurate/inaccurate.

Also a lot of things she said were common sense e.g. 17:38 talking about how a pilot calling another pilot a bad pilot was a big insult….

I wouldve loved her to use more complex terminology and explained the terminology, I didnt feel like I learnt much. Although it was still interesting getting a pilot’s take on some of my favourite aviation scenes.

    July 30, 2020 at 8:11 pm

I think captain Fatima is wrong about Flight’ movie. This crash in the movie links to Alaska Air crash in the 90’s. All the steps taken under an uncontrolled dive were correct. Flying upside down is a technique used by Air force pilots to control the dive due to a failure in hydraulic systems

    • Ihdc1

      July 31, 2020 at 9:26 am

Airline pilots aren’t air force pilots and airliners aren’t fighter jets.

    • prateek bhatt

      July 31, 2020 at 10:04 am

@Ihdc1 But physics of flying remains the same. Science doesn’t change for Airline pilots

    • Ihdc1

      July 31, 2020 at 10:12 am

@prateek bhatt Airliners can’t withstand the same stresses as fighter jets. I guarantee no airline pilot is trained to intentionally fly a plane upside down under any circumstances.

    • prateek bhatt
