I’m used to these things and even still, with that description and knowing that they look like in person.. It’s truly some horror movies isht.. trillions of 17 year old bugs crawling out of the earth, leaving behind exoskeletons and making so much noise.
This guy is great though, so much passion

Great video! Thanks so much for sharing your enthusiasm and expertise. Question: why do the cicadas in the distance sound more like a droning whistle, where up close they make more of the clicking song like in the video? Is that some kind of Doppler-ish effect? Just curious.

As somebody who has lived in Southern California 99% of my life, I LOVE/PREFER the Midwest and South. Cicadas are something I associate with that part of the country. I love cicadas and the sound they make. Something about them is just so inherently simple, that I find their existence so peaceful. A symbol of nature. I’m very jealous of the places that have them.
Great video! And I love the enthusiasm for them!

As someone who lives in the Midwestern US, it’s hard to look at a cicada and think “you’re pretty cool.” They are very annoying and seem to have no purpose. They are also gigantic for an insect, and there are so many of them. I just can’t bring myself to like them.

Story time.
I live cicadas, so whenever I’ll go for a walk, I’ll pick one or two up and let them just crawl on my arms. But once they get close to my head, I move them away. Today I had one on my arm and I just let it be when it was on my shoulder. I didn’t see it for a while so I thought it was gone.
Well I decided to take off my bra and I heard the warning call. I’ve heard it before, and I knew that cicada didn’t leave. I took off my sweatshirt (it was cold out so I was wearing only a sweatshirt and a bra), and behold, the cicada was there. My mom wasn’t happy when I showed her my new friend, Freddie the cicada

I believe an Entomologist is a scientist, aren’t they? I like science myself, in fact, I’ve called myself a natural born scientist because “I want to know WHY” things are the way they are!!
And “this event” this Natural event that we wait for only comes every 17 years, WOW!!.. So I’ve been watching and listening to all the discussion about cicadas BUT, I notice a subject matter about the cicadas is missing, which is “at least as interesting as everything else about the cicadas”!! Probably a little more “Mystifying” than everything else though! And that is… That for what ever reason, these small little harmless creatures, are victims to some type of FUNGUS, and that fungus causes them to turn into “Zombies” for the Fungus! And here’s the “KICKER”, in that fungus(and I’m not the expert, YOU are) are 2 different types of chemicals substances.. One of which is a “Psychedelic and the other is a natural stimulant”! Both being natural substances! So the question to YOU, with all the News on these little guys, “Why leave that part out of Your story line, on these Bugs STORY you just told”!? A simple answer would be fine!! Thanks again!

It’s a sound I expect to hear in the summer, along with the birds chirping. It’s warm/hot outside, and I don’t have to hear construction or any other disruptions. Just a pleasant background shimmery wave of reverberation. We’re hearing a song of love.
When I was a kid, I’d look at the trunk or climb trees to pull the exoskeleton (I think it’s called) off of a limb and see who would touch it. Some people are squeamish of a thing smaller than a pink eraser and more fragile than old paper.

In Arizona, the annual cicada’s distress call sounds exactly like a rattlesnake. It sometimes makes evening hikes very stressful. But we don’t get the 17 year kind, probably due to the limits of what an arid climate can support.

Long exposure to 85 or higher decibels sound can cause hearing loss, the louder the sound the shorter time it will take. Cicadas make sound between 80-100 decibels. especially protect the younger children by reducing the exposure time.

This is very true though after the pandemic we’ve all been though. These 17 year cicadas give us a sense of normalcy. Like we’re back to the past when it was normal.

Just saw you on the CBS This Morning. You are just the cutest with your enthusiasm for all things bugs, especially cicadas. Kudos to you for finding a job that you are passionate about and where you get to spend your days in the “symphony section” of the forest.

I think the sound is probably also somewhat of a defense against predators. I’ve been noticing that birds sometimes seem to be disrupted by it. I’m sure a lot of birds are still eating them anyway, but I’ve noticed birds in my backyard seem to be getting upset and making more noise than usual. I think it’s because of the noise. I wonder if the emergence of the cicadas increases the bird population every 17 years because there’s more food, so more birds survive and make babies?

Omg, this guy can throat sing!! My mom inspired a similar sense of wonder in me regarding cicadas when I was a child. She taught me that they only live for a brief period, mate, and die while signifying the arrival of summer with their noise. Whenever one landed on the window screen, she’d shush my brother and I and say quietly, “Look, there’s a cicada!” If it weren’t for mom, I’d probably be terrified of them.

Ummmm… what’s up with the chocolate covered cicadas? People are gobbling these up in vandalia Ohio 2021! True story! I’m seriously thinking “no”! Something that has been literally in the ground for 17 years, and the 1st thing that pops in their minds is…. “let’s dip that SOB in some milk chocolate!” Are you kidding me right now?! Lol! Bon appetit ya’ll!

This is so cool, I like how you mentioned they’re like a musical instrument and use their wings to direct the sound. One thing that I find interesting is that here in Florida where I live, I like to play guitar and sing in the evening. I notice what ever I play, they seem to follow it. Is it just me, or do they interact with actual music? It’s very cool because at one point I repeatedly strummed one chord in a very drone like way and went “om” with my voice, and the cicadas pitch and rhythm seemed to line up with mine in complete harmony. Then when I changed up and started doing more up beat stuff, I notice they started doing different things. I’m pretty sure it’s not just me, I can really hear their change in their noise.
