I’ve worked for many “startups” and the weak link was always the CEO because they didn’t understand the technical side of the business enough to make good decisions. In some cases, the CTO tried to run the company, but they didn’t have the business skills to pull it off. I never experienced a situation where the engineers failed on their own accord.

    • @maastrictisokokok

      August 26, 2025 at 4:45 pm

I mean it’s obviously depending on the personality, in my experience engineers get too obsessed with the product and over complicate it, and have poor commercial intuition. i think it’s ok for CEO to focus most on the market and investors as long as they listen to engineering team

    • @briangoldberg4439

      August 26, 2025 at 5:52 pm

@@maastrictisokokok There needs to be technical people who’s job it is to facilitate communication between the focused engineers. I filled that specific role in many startups. The CEOs can only focus on the business if they understand the technology well enough to find the correct market segments and the right people to pitch to. I have observed in my career that they very rarely do

Over my 40-year professional life, I have been in larger and more-grounded enterprises…except once. I did a 6-month stint at a start-up, and I am absolutely not cut out for that kind of life. It was a perpetual nervous breakdown. Michael’s characterization of “urgency” and “chaos” 100% fit that company.
However, based on real-world experience, his perception of HR is skewed. HR exists for one and only one reason: to protect the company’s *ss – nothing else. If you think HR is ever on the side of the worker, you’re delusional.

    • @papabigbossnass

Isn’t it exactly what he said about HR? I believe he said, start up needs capital and people. HR is there to ensure the start up get the right people and keep them. So you are right. It’s all about the company interest, had always been! But it also what he said

FFS, really? We’re going to have a “CEO” try to justify their existence? All we’re seeing is a BS artist not actually answer the questions being asked. ZERO stars, do not recommend.

    • @MegaTyler93

      August 27, 2025 at 2:11 pm

I mean, I think he more than justified their existence tbh. Also the majority of the questions were about start ups and business, which a CEO would have full knowledge on.

  43. @Bulldogg6404

    August 27, 2025 at 11:24 am

    19:46 addendum
KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator. A business always operates in pursuit of goals and/or objectives, and the Key Performance Indicators are a way of measuring whether the business is effectively meeting (or at least effectively approaching) those goals or objectives. Businesses with different goals or objectives have, obviously, different KPI’s, but there are universal standards. These metrics are quantifiable, and therefore make sense to be presented in a document or sheet (or a dashboard, in the digital world) with grading or scoring.

  44. @Nafrtho

    August 27, 2025 at 12:57 pm

Hating on a CEO “not doing anything” when you are not fit to lead and run a company or even invest all the capital and inheriting all the risk is a crazy mentality, then again we will always need people that can’t see the bigger picture and just clock in and clock out. Always mind-boggling how people can be so short-sighted.

To be excellent or amazing product / services company one has to get their functional and non-functional requirements right. It does not matter if you develop iteratively or not, requirements are key to success and managing them via techniques like traceability, baselining, exporting and Importing, sharing, change management, etc. is very important.
