the world trade center was finished in ’87 where computers replaced stock brokers and obtusely caused the stock market crash … this ended investment in tv and only left investment in film (which ended after 911) – skateboarding came out of the crash in ’87 😀

Yeah. This is what a TED Talk could be- engaging and humorous.
Jena is pretty edgy but is right on the money about what it will take to make people pay attention in the future.

    • @SyddG

      August 3, 2025 at 6:47 pm

  20. @cubulous

This was so important. Echo chambers and confirmation biases are being weaponized against us. I am always looking to be challenged. Being uncomfortable helps me to evaluate myself and my own biases and shortsightedness. If I ONLY ever seek out places where I agree with everything being said, then I’m not growing and I’m definitely not interested in the understating of or empathy for others who disagree with me. Humanity is a spectrum.

I don’t like nepotism (Amy Schumer, the powerful Senator’s first cousin) but Amy Schumer actually is funny with real wit and edge. Jena Friedman is what I imagine Pam from The Office would be like as a stand up comedian.

This was great. Jenna’s been so funny for a long time. One thing about the TED videos that I wonder is whether or not this idea of the videos rolling out over time is a good plan or if they should just drop them daily for like two weeks after the conference. I mean I get the idea of spreading the content out but nowadays I think a slight tweak would make this stuff pop more?

    Anyways, it’s always good content.

  73. @sty0pa

Maybe don’t rely on your standup. Flogging the whingy victim thing is so 2023.

  74. @sty0pa

    August 5, 2025 at 2:51 pm

What is funnier than her jokes is that she probably TO THIS DAY doesn’t understand that her victim-mantra is the *exact* sort of tiresome whinging that got Trump elected.
“abortion’s going to be illegal! durr’ – women are literally the largest demographic in the population. The USSC ruled that it’s not a federal issue, so the states can decide what they want. Women can swing the vote in every single state. So you don’t like giving women the vote or a voice in their government? “No, because it’s not going the way I want!” /poutface (*stamps foot*)
