May I also add that if you log into anything with an admin username to change that. it is insecure. Create a new admin account with a different name or just change the name of the original admin account to anything. else.

  22. @curtisbme

    May 24, 2025 at 7:15 pm

@8:16 – Absolutely incorrect as the opposite is true. Getting a smart lock that does not have a keyway is FAR more secure than having a standard lock. And if you get one of the many models that have external power source, like Yale that takes 9v battery, you have no worries about battery issues (that you have plenty of warning about anyway). No one has cracked these digital locks but essentially every residential lock is easily, quickly, and relatively silently bypassed by a easily purchasable tools that require no fancy lockpicking skills. And the reality is you don’t even need it to be connected if you are worried about it, just need a keypad and if you want it, bluetooth or ‘tap’ access for your phone.

The saddest part of these privacy and security concerns imo is how amazing these devices can be for the disabled and their ability to live as independently as possible. Unfortunately, a lot people have to make the choice of between privacy or independence

  24. @alexc8512

    May 24, 2025 at 8:55 pm

every time I move Im always annoyed to see neighbors with ring doorbells. its like how am I supposed to bring someone new or go out late at night without being surveilled! I only bring up the reasons because people always ignore the very real and hidden reasons people want privacy.

Block internet access for these devices and use them only on your local network. Avoid buying devices that depend on internet access to function. To access your network remotely, set up a VPN like Tailscale.

  44. @Bob9961

    May 25, 2025 at 1:32 pm

When you own smart devices (robotics, smart phones & speakers, cars, ebikes, etc.), turning off a camera or speaker, or deleting profile metadata, can’t help you keep private data private and secure. If you own smart devices and keep them around your personal spaces, among your friends & family, your privacy is compromised. Full stop. Companies whose primary mission is profit (99.9% of companies) will never be trustworthy partners in your life. That’s a fact that can’t be overstated. Think about the thousands of companies that employee thousands of people. Isn’t it just a matter of time before rogue employees exploit identifying data their companies harvest about you? Actually, it’s too late; that’s been quietly happening for decades.

    • @jpe1

      May 28, 2025 at 10:22 am

“Safer” in what sense? Less likely to be hacked, yes. Less likely to break? Definitely! Less likely to be picked? That depends on the specific lock, how well designed it is. What most people overlook is that a deadbolt in a wooden door frame is only good for keeping honest people out, police and criminals know they can easily break in with just a good kick or shoulder slam to the door.
