BYD has about 45 models… Tesla has 1 new model (the cybertruck) since 2017. I have pity for anyone who believes Tesla to be some kind an innovator at this point, when they have had virtually no innovation reach the market for 8 years.

BYD has its own shipping vessels for mass shipping of vehicles to Europe and South America
@mokulashi
March 24, 2025 at 4:10 pm
except windows and tires, BYD manufactures every single components for its cars as well. Tesla can’t even manufacture batteries
@winsonip4447

It’s because the shipping companies Hapag-Lloyd from Germany and NYK from Japan refused to accept orders from BYD. Perhaps both have significant interests in their domestic automobile companies. As a result, BYD decided to build its own RORO fleet. Once their fleet launched its service, both Hapag-Lloyd and NYK began accepting shipment orders from BYD.

I think the problem itself isn’t so much Tesla, but the United States in general.
The United States has lagged behind in electric cars and, even worse, in terms of control over raw materials. It didn’t even have its own lithium refinery. Tesla opened its own in December 2024, the first lithium refinery in the United States, which has already gradually begun producing the 4680 lithium battery.
Currently, China controls the main raw materials (lithium, cobalt, and nickel) and, especially, the refining process. China refines between 58% and 68% of the world’s lithium, 65% of the nickel, and 68% of the world’s cobalt. The United States plays virtually no role in controlling these materials, which is why battery production is cheaper in China. Selling lithium to BYD or other Chinese companies isn’t the same as selling raw materials to any Western competitor; it’s more expensive. He didn’t say that because China is bad, just in case. I’m sure that if the United States had controlled these raw materials, it would have done the same to Chinese companies, but we must admit that, overall, the United States is lagging behind in this regard. China had a vision that electric vehicles would be the future and began consolidating its raw materials.

The US are doomed because the short-sighted money earning perspectives of investors has pushed American companies to destroy the industrial base in the US. Capitalistic GREED made them blind and now they pay for this historical mistake. At the time being it is nearly impossible to turn the ship around. China has already won the economic war due to its supply chain depth, irrelevant if US citizens like it or not. If you live in the US, buckle-up, it will be a wild ride with a crazy Orangutan on the steering wheel. When this ride is over, US exceptionalism will be a distant dream.

It is not only BYD. It is Geely, SAIC, Nio, Huawei, etc., etc. BYD is the leader but there many more. Just go to Asia to see them. They have 50%-75% market share in many Asian, South American, African countries.

What are doing BYD different? They did not employ an egomaniac CEO who is distracted from running the business.
@winsonip4447
March 24, 2025 at 5:17 pm
Tesla is a tech company and system integrator; they design the cars, write the software, and assemble the vehicles. In contrast, BYD is primarily a manufacturing company. In addition to software development, they can produce over 70% of key components in-house and also develop advanced batteries and infrastructure, such as high-speed charging stations. This is why BYD can operate like Toyota with vertical integration, saving time and costs in R&D and delivering products faster than their competitors.

The average cost of a BYD vehicle is $16,700. The average price of a Tesla is well over $40,000. Pretty misleading/deceptive to claim that BYD is “demolishing” Tesla. It’s the equivalent of patting Honda on the back for outselling BMW or Mercedes.
